I thought the same, so I didn't start this topic. But, since u have already started, so beware then  :P, I'll keep posting.
who will win   who will fail miserably?
I think Pakistan will fail  miserably this time,  but u never know they might come up suddenly with that Imran Khan's Tiger corner theory just like they did in 92.:D. U never know when Pakistan might kick-in.
~WEST INDIES !!!!!.....we r goin to win!! (inshallah)

We have  world record holder Brian Lara and Capt Carl Hooper!
So what? We have world record holders too. Here goes the list:

1. Saeed Anwar: Highest one-day Intl. score-----> 194.

2. Waseem Akram: The no.1 bowler in Intl. cricket today with all his wicket records both in test matches and One days.

3. Shoaib Akhter: One of the Fastest bowler in the world.

4. Shahid Afridi: Fastest  century in One day Intl.

Do u want more?  ;D :DBut still I must admit, Brian Lara is one of my favourite batsman. He has an awesome batting style. Others are good too like Carl Hooper, ChanderPaul. There is one bowler Franklin Rose from West Indies that I really used to like for some reason although others didn't like him much. I don't know if he is playing for world cup or not. Man, I need to update myself for this world cup.
South Africa has some incredible players. Jonty Rhodes is one of my most favourite players on the field. U have gotta see him fielding. He comes in from nowhere to catch the ball :)

Wassalam.

<Has a heart attack>  .....

Okay okay, so pakistan freezes everytime they play SA or Australia....but come on!  Miserably ain't coming close.  Not that it matters since Canada qualified...so I that's who I'm rooting for :P

Actually, Pakistan is the most interesting team to watch...not only coz I'm paki...but because they either "fail miserably"  or do the exact opposite.

Realistically speaking, I really do think SA will win.  (Man I'm so excited....this comes close to my soccer fever.)

Since I can't afford satellite, I'm counting on all of you to keep me posted.

I don't want to tbe interested in this world cup, seriously we've got despot Mugabe who's holding vast amount of food back so people are dying from hunger and starvation.

He is threating of evicitng people on their land and the threat of war on Iraq is looming, its sad but life goes on dosen't it.

The muslims are one ummah, lets not forget.

<Has a heart attack>  .....
U just hearing that and going through heart attacks :). What if u witness it with ur own eyes? On a serious note though.....The reason I say that Pakistan probably will lose miserably is because the team is not in form at all, there is too much politics going on in the team (like hamaaray mahaan Wasim bhai is not the captain, so more chances he wont play at his best). Wallahu A'alm. Also, most people are predicting that Pakistan wont be able to stand for long. But, anyways. lets hope and pray that they do something :)
Actually, Pakistan is the most interesting team to watch...not only coz I'm paki...but because they either "fail miserably"  or do the exact opposite
Yeah, that's what Tony Greg says too that Pakistan is the most interesting team to watch. They play their best against the toughest teams but suddenly collapse against teams like Bangladesh like they did in last world cup. That's more funnier rather than interesting  :D
Since I can't afford satellite, I'm counting on all of you to keep me posted.
Keep checkin' cricinfo.com :)
Jayasuriya and Company all the way

Sri Lanka is THE BEEEEEEEEST !!!
Sri Lanka is good, not best :) The only 2 teams that have remained consitently in form are South Africa and Australia.  Sri Lanka has some good players on its side like Arvinda DeSilva, Atapattu, Jayasuriya. Jayawardene is one of my favourite batsmen from Sri Lanka. I like his batting style and man.......Muralitharan is one of the most dangerous bowlers, I must say. He is one bowler who can give hard time to any batsman no matter how experienced that batsman is..

Bro, thats fine with you but let me remind you this.
Maybe I'm seen as an extremist or maybe somebody with the head gone, however, the other day I brought a regional paper and there was this guy who gave a documentary on why he thought Mugabe was a despot.

Masha-allah he went to great pains to arrest Mugabe when he last came to Europe and sadly he got battered in the process. His group his known as a liberal Gay Rights group, to me it struck my heart that here is this person going out on a limb and trying to do some justice in this tyranical world of ours.

Where were the Muslims ??? Asleep ? No doubt. Waqi, there are people dying in Zimbabwe and in other places around the world and we have got our eyes shut, we don't talk about these issues thats whats upsetting me.

Isn't it a right to speak up to a dictator and tell him of the injustice he is doing ? Sure we can beat about the bush about USA and Israel and UK being the crusaders and all crap, but the real culprits are the Muslims, when we should be the leading lights of humanity and justice we have fallen into the sewars and are now seen as the filth that carries amongst it.

Welcome to the world of cricket   :). Its an outdoor game played with bats, a ball, and wickets by two teams of 11 players each. Its quite similar to baseball I would say, although I don't know the complete rules and regulations of baseball.

Yes, yes, we are here to enjoy a little fun which will NOT make us fall asleep nor will it make us FORGET our responsibilities  :D :D :D

Jehan Mubarak - born in Washington but schooled in the privileged bastion of Sri Lanka's educational system: Royal College, where he was a highly talented all-round sportsman - has been given his first opportunity to tour with the national squad as Sri Lanka's extra batsman. A tall but graceful looking left-hander, he made his Test debut against Bangladesh as an opener earlier in the year, scoring 27 and 31. He is also a developing off-spinner, identified by some as a future all-rounder. He has played for both Sri Lanka Under 19 and Sri Lanka A. (30.11.2002)

Still it is good to hear that the sri lankan team finally has a muslim on the team.

Bro Hanif while i agree that Mugabe's reign in zimbabwe is not a good thing i also believe that by having international sporting events many people from different backgrounds are brought together in the love of the game and in some instances it can lead to dialogue between the general populations. Unfortunately it is in my opinion the governments and not the people who instigate wars etc.... so by people talking to each other the real picture can be seen by the general public.  Aside from this in the case of Zimbabwe it is going to be a great chance for journalists to actually get into the country to have a look at & document what is going on.... I know u r goin to say but he will hide what is happening. He can't hide everything though things will slip through.

Australia have to start off favourites and SA with home advantage can't be ruled out.

Pakistanis can blow hot and cold so who knows what there'll be like on the day.....Indians rely on Tendulkar too much.....ditto for West Indies and Lara....Lankans need Murali on top form and as for England....well all I can say is that they better hope the Zimbabwe match is called off to spare them a defeat!!!

Just as I predicted Pakistan will lose miserably. This match was an example of bad captaincy overall. Waqar Younis (the captain) getting into heated debates with umpires, and then being asked to give up his bowling the second time. He also exchanged words with Andrew Symonds. A captain should be the most cool-tempered person on ground, should be an example for his team-mates.

And the England saga continues......

I reckon with all this Zimbabwe stuff, England may actually forget they are a woeful team and may start winning for once. ;-)

Australia still look favourites. Lankans were impressive. Pakastanis just seem to blow up after a good start.

But I'm still on my search to find a Dutch Muslim on the board before the World Cup ends.

Br Khalid would you say England would reach the super six over India, India have only one really tough match left (InshaAllah they'll loose that one) but the others should be winable (well on paper anyway). As for England they still have to play Australia, Pakistan and India  :o :o and you never know zimbabwe might be REALLY lucky they have got a bonus 4 pts after all..... ::)

As for the other group i think that although south africa have been unlucky they may squeeze in and to be fair bangladesh haven't allowed the West-Indies to get a really huge score(244/9-50 overs) today whether bangladesh can actually beat west indies is another matter, i haven't actually watched any of their matches yet. ... but u never know :D

Australia Pakistan India New-Zealand Sri-Lanka & South Africa

Australia 170/2 in 36 overs and
Netherlands are currently 40/2 after 10 overs i think a runrate of 5 an over is do-able if they can keep their wickets. I would love to see Australia beaten by Holland  :D ;) :D ;)

But must appreciate Anderson's bowling........Brilliant bowling by this young, new guy.

Kenya's win under review 26/02/03
ACU ask for tapes of match

Kenya’s stunning Cricket World Cup win over Sri Lanka in Nairobi on Monday is reportedly being investigated by the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit (ACU), who have asked to be supplied with video tapes of the game.

Mahela Jayawardene: Being watched

A source told AFP that the ACU has asked the official tournament broadcatsers for tape of the upset 53-run win by Kenya.

"Yes, the tapes have been asked for," the source said. "I believe it is the first match in this World Cup where the tapes have been summoned."

Chasing 211 for victory, the Sri Lankans were bundled out for 157 to suffer its first loss at the tournament.

Sri Lanka, Kenya furious over fixing suspicions
CricInfo - 27 February 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------

Sri Lanka's team management has reacted furiously to match fixing suspicions following their shock defeat to Kenya.

A news wire report had earlier claimed the sport's Ant-Corruption Unit (ACU) was scrutinising the game closely.

The report said that a special request had been made for a videotape, although the ICC later said this was simply normal procedure.

"It's an insult to this side," said Sri Lankan manager Ajit Jayasekera.

"The reason we lost was because we batted badly. It was a gettable total, and the batting let the side down.

"We vehemently deny this allegation. Just because we lost the match to a team like Kenya it is disgusting to be accused of match fixing. I am very annoyed."

Kenya Cricket Association chairman Jimmy Rayani was also disappointed by the allegations.

"What is the point of having a World Cup if everybody knows the results of all the games?" he said.

"Don't insult us every time we beat a big team."

An ICC spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that the ACU had spoken to team representatives and reassure them that normal procedures were being followed.

I have already been so dis-heartened by Pakistan's performance against England that I have lost the enthusiasm to predict Pakistan's victory over India, specially knowing the fact that they are going to play against India after 2 years. This was also a blow that Pakistan lost to England, but England lost to India although India's performance had been worse than Pakistan's. To tell u the truth, I still have to decide whether I am gonna watch that match or not. I can't see Pakistan losing against India after 2 years, to add fuel to the fire, see them losing in world Cup match. I'd better be off the TV set  and just hear news whether they won or lost. BIG MATCH-------->If lost, would be a BIG LOSS---------> and big loss would be BIG TIME EMOTIONAL TRAUMA............and I as of now don't have the courage to go through that......... :D

                          Pakistan V India preview

The World Cup clash between India and Pakistan has been billed as the biggest match of the tournament so far.

History has shown the rivalry between the neighbouring countries is the fiercest in world cricket and this latest encounter is certain to add fuel to the fire.

Not only will both sides be looking for a win to delight their passionate support, but four points would also boost their respective chances of qualifying for the Super Six stage.

The Group A table is incredibly tight with England and Zimbabwe vying with Pakistan and India for the two remaining qualifying spots available.

For India, defeat may just dent their pride rather than World Cup hopes, but for Pakistan losing to their arch-rivals would effectively spell the end of their campaign.

And with history against them - they were beaten by India at the 1992 and 1999 tournaments - Pakistan will be looking to their key men for inspiration.

Paceman Shoaib Akhtar, who has taken 10 wickets at 18 runs apiece, is a player able to provide that spark.

The Rawalpindi Express is part of a potent Pakistan attack that will be seeking to exploit an Indian batting line-up which has only recently come to life, thanks mainly to Sachin Tendulkar.

"I am going to bowl really quick against the Indians," said Shoaib, who delivered a 100mph ball against England.

"I am fired up for the match and I will go flat out. If I get my rhythm right, I am not going to let the Indian batsmen have an easy time, even Sachin."

India captain Sourav Ganguly would do well to heed those words of warning having crashed to 120 all out against Australia on the same pitch earlier in the World Cup.

India's aim will be to keep wickets in hand through the middle overs and make as many runs as possible in the last 10 - a plan, the skipper fears, may be scuppered by Shoaib and co.

"Our biggest problem is Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar," said Ganguly.

"I regard Wasim as the best left-arm swing bowler in the world. He is a magician - he can make the ball talk."

The India captain, who returned to form with the bat when he made 112 against Namibia, was also quick to play down significance of playing Pakistan.

"I am not feeling any more responsible than I already am, because it is a game after all," he added.

"It's just like playing against Zimbabwe, Australia, England or any other side.

"Our approach will be the same. Pakistan tend to blow hot one day and cold the other. And we don't want to be caught on the wrong side.

" A score of 250 could be a winning total judging by the way our bowlers have been bowling."

Ganguly told BBC Hindi he is likely to stick with the same team that beat England so convincingly in Durban on Wednesday.

Wassalam.

Are the Pakistanis on the board still in shock because no one's posted anything about THE game ;)

It was such a phenomenal inning by Tendulkar. Just superb. I watched the game with my friends (6 Pakis and 3 Indians) which made it all the more exciting.

I was glad that Saeed scored the century. Interestingly, when the dejected Waqar came to speak in the after-game presentation, he started with 'Bismillahirrahman Arrahim'. I've never heard him do that before.

I am not in shock at all. For some reason, I was almost certain that India will win, but my overwhelming patriotic emotions didn't allow me to be courageous enough to predict India's victory over Pakistan, although Br. Khalid did ask :). But anyhow, Pakistan is not to be blamed at all, they did their best. Saeed's century was itself very enjoying. It was the little master blaster with an awesome cricket ODI record of 60 50s and 34 centuries, and a total of more than 12,000 runs, who took the game out of hands of Pakis.
I watched the match in a local desi restaurant where Indian supporters were almost twice in number as compared to Pakistani supporters, and we all had a very good time shouting, waving flags, supporting our teams, but all Pakistanis stood and clapped for Tendulkar when he got out on 98 and was sent back to pavilion. We Pakistanis always tell the Indians jokingly that its only because of Tendulkar that u guys almost always manage to win the match, but once he is retired from Intl. cricket, India's team will have a very hard time winning matches anymore unless u have another Tendulkar on his way for Intl. cricket :). Once again! Marvellous batting by Sachin. Congratulations! All Indians on board and off board on winning the match.

Wassalam.

No not in shock..... just unable to get to the internet till today...... :(
Am i the only one who wasn't that impressed by Saeeds century, >:( i think that he played a very selfish game and was so busy trying to get to 100 that he didn't care how slowly he played.... Unfortunately Inzemam who is badnaam for getting run out was a victim of this selfishness... none of the commentators, i heard / saw, picked up on the fact that the call for the run was inzi's and that saeed should have run when the shout was made ::)

Any way, i was very impressed by the Indian Running btwn the wickets and i think that this is deffinately an area where the pakistani's need to improve, they were taking singles where doubles could easily have been made. Not to mention the loose bowling at the start. and don't get me started on the fielding  >:( hopefully the Pakistani's will have learnt a lesson from this match.

Tandulkar was v good to watch and played a brilliant match as did most of the rest of the indian team. so  [] [] [] to them

And as for yesterday, I have NEVER supported Australia sooo much in any match. Insha'Allah Pakistan will now grab the lifeline they have been given and take advantage in their match against Zimbabwe.   8)

so who's going to win in the grp B matches today????

Got to go do some work now c u later

Saeed Anwar had been absent for a long time, as you know, he was injured and out of form. He was the opener for Pakistan and it was his duty to keep an end safe. He played perfectly in this role. He had a run rate of 4.8 in this match which is an ideal run rate for an opener who has to stay safe.
When the wickets fall at both ends then the team gets more under pressure.

You should know that when a player plays fast then there is a greater danger of getting dismissed early, just like Tendulkar was almost out on 32, only for his ball was dropped by Abdul Razaq.

Inzemam is widely known for his talent of getting run out.  :P  It's unfair to blame it on Saeed Anwar, who saw the danger of running on that ball.  :-[ For the record I think Inzemam, Yousuf Youhana and Waqar Younis could just as well have stayed at home for all the contributions they have made so far.
Taufiq Umar, Muhammad Sami and Saleem Ilahi should play in the next match instead of the three above.
Wasim-bhai should be captain again - in his rightful place, forever. Pakistani selectors don't see the talent - the English county team where Shane Warne was captain have looked for Wasim Akram to come and be captain.

INsha Allah tomorrow we'll pull through!!!

just read this....... :P
For Pakistan to achieve a better run rate than England's, the International Cricket Council have come up with the following possibilities:

If Zimbabwe bat first and score 100, Pakistan will need to get the runs in 10.5 overs. If they score 150, Pakistan will need to get the runs in 12.1 overs. A score of 200 allows Pakistan 13.2 overs, while 250 allows 14.2 overs.

If Pakistan bat first and score 200 they will need to dismiss Zimbabwe for 13 or less. If they score 250 they will need to dismiss Zimbabwe for 62 or less while 300 sets a target of 112 or less. Should Pakistan reach the dizzy heights of 350, the target goes up to 161.

::) no comment till tomorrow  ;)

             Rain wrecks South African dream

South Africa were left to watch in dismay in Durban
Group B, Durban, Sri Lanka 268-9 (50 overs) tie with South Africa 229-6 (45 overs) D/L method

South Africa have gone out of the World Cup after a dramatic weather-hit tie with Sri Lanka in Durban.

Torrential rain brought the game to a premature end with five overs remaining and, under the Duckworth-Lewis method, both teams were awarded two points to end the hosts' progression to the Super Six stage.

Marvan Atapattu was the star of the match, hitting a stunning century for the Sri Lankans to leave South Africa facing a daunting 269 for victory.

They launched an inspired chase courtesy of some big hitting by Herschelle Gibbs.

But a mini collapse, brought on by a spin attack, put the Sri Lankans back in command.

In a topsy-turvy contest South Africa again turned the tide with a 63-run partnership between Shaun Pollock and Mark Boucher.

Pollock, though, was run out in superb fashion by Muralitharan before the rain came down and the players were called off.

Earlier Atapattu scored 124 off 129 balls, including 18 boundaries, and put on 152 runs with Aravinda de Silva in a crucial partnership.

But Atapattu was an early villain, partly responsible for a massive mix-up which saw Jayasuriya run out by a direct hit from Gary Kirsten.

Hashan Tillakaratne and Mahela Jayawardene did little to inspire with their respective knocks, Tillakaratne edging to Boucher to become the first of Jacques Kallis' three victims.

Their departures brought de Silva to the crease and he and Atapattu hit the South Africans around the ground.

Their wickets in quick succession and some tight bowling from Kallis and Pollock pegged the Sri Lankans back late on.

In response, Gibbs and fellow opener Graeme Smith took the chase on with aplomb, putting on 65 runs in 12 overs.

But Smith gave up his wicket unnecessarily when he lofted de Silva's first ball to Pulasthi Gunaratne in the outfield.

De Silva added the scalp of Kirsten minutes later and captain Sanath Jayasuriya added two more wickets as the South African batsmen capitulated.

With South Africa teetering on 149 for five, the game looked out of the hosts' grasp before Boucher and Pollock set off intelligently.

Helped by some quick running and, latterly, some big shots from the pair, they raced to 212 before Pollock was run out by Muralitharan.

That brought Lance Klusener to the crease but, with that, the rain came down and the players were brought off with the scores level, under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

The result means that Sri Lanka, Kenya and New Zealand qualify frkm group B to the Super Six stage.

So, finally, Group B already decided. Its only Pakistan vs. Zimbabwe match left to decide who reaches the Super Sixes from Group  A. I haven't given up hope yet. Pakistan's situation is very similar to what it was back in World Cup 1992, if anyone here had seen it and remembers what I am talking about :). Pakistan Zindabad...........

Wassalam.

There's still hope!!  (Muahaha)

As for the whole Bismillah thing...

Waqar Yunus always says bismillah irahman iraheem.  But he just looked too sad this time.  I have his speech style memorized.  He starts faltering, and says "i mean" a lot.  its funnieee.

Good luck to the rest of the teams, I have now officially retired from watching, since Canada is out.  lol.

Unless somehow miraculously Zimbabwe loses miserably tomorrow, I have better things to do.  :)

Wasalaam.

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

South Africa, West Indies, England and Pakistan can all blame the rain along the way.

Someone told me its the rainy season at the moment in South Africa. Is this right? And if so why did they hold a World Cup there at this time of year???
