What Do You Think of Hussein?

Hello all,

There's a lot of talk on the boards about the US and Bush, rightly so as it looks like we are going to war.  However, I'm curious as to what you guys think about Sadam Hussein.  Do you think what we hear about him in the media is accurate in terms of the atrocities committed towards his own people?  There's a lot of talk about how the Iraqi people will suffer during a war (no doubt) but aren't they suffereing already, and not just from sanctions? If you do think he is guilty of these things than what should be done?  I know people are against sanctions for humanitarian reasons, so what else should be done? Should he be left to his own devices? Should we wait for Arab nations to get it together and oust him? If there are any Kuwaitis on board I'd be interested to hear what y'all think especially.

None of these questions are meant to confrontational, so please nobody respond with a rant about the Big Bad USA. :)

Peace,

Sparrow

Peace, Sparrow -

I may have mentioned this in a few others threads, but if my opinion mattered here, Saddam Hussain should have been ousted 12 years ago.

There is no excuse for the fact that he was not. Except for purposes of keeping him there to "necessitate" (or I should say, justify) a pre-emptive war later on for alterior motives.

There have been various political analysts (western or non) who have concluded that no "Muslim" tyrant leader would use "weapons of nuclear mass destruction" (or whatever) first. The only country(s) to use such weapons pre-emptively are...well, you know the rest...didn't want to "rant."

:)

There's a hadith (narration) where the Prophet (saws) basically said, when there comes a time when a citizen can't rightfully express/criticize the wrong actions of his/her oppressor (by saying, You are an oppressor), then s/he is in agreement with the oppressor (ie, a Muslim is commanded to enjoin good and forbid evil, and the best jihaad is to speak the truth to an oppressor). Common saying here (conveys something similar to Islaamic teachings) - Silence is death.

Allahu A'lim.

Peace,

I personally would favor letting the people of that country sort out their own affairs.  (This from the comfort of my own office.) The only friend I had in Baghdad I lost contact with a few years ago, may Allah protect and guide her.  No ranting,  :) but, if atrocities committed against ones own people, posessing (and using) weapons that would best be left "holstered" was the criteria, we would have a long line of people to "take out".  (There are those who would say we would be at the front of that line.)

I am not a young woman, so such talk makes me think back to the 60s and 70s.  I guess I am for letting these things take their inevitable course. Only Allah knows what the outcome will be, including our part in it.

For me, it is best left to everyone to behaive themselves, including us. Doing that will ensure that there are enough "cookies to go around at snack time." Just my two cents worth.

If all that's said about him is true I believe the Arab nations should oust him as Muslim countries helping Muslim people.

He needs to be sent off and made to live as he has made others live and the country assisted in being put back together by other Muslim countries.

Two things.

The first problem is that MOST of the other Arab countires are run by people with a similar dictatorial style to Saddam (though Saddam is probably the worst - but by no means the only one - to attack his own people). So it really boils down to "let hin who is without sin cast the first stone".

The second problem is that the USA is powerful enough to bully any leader into following its line.  Even if the leader is a tyrant (e.g the Shah of Iran), he will be a USA ally if he does as they say.  Like they say, might is right.  Outside the muslim world, we saw that once Noriega was no longer useful to the USA, he was kicked out by force.

The solution ? Well, I've been thinking about it for years, and the only solution is for the muslims to return to the teachings of their religion. Until and unless that happens, NOTHING WILL CHANGE.

I think I posted an article long time ago (I have a vague memory of it)...about Saddam Hussein.  It was written as a satire, but there was this one part which said that Hussein is a charitable man...he donated half a pint of blood every day for <some number> of years for a copy of the Qur'an to be written in his blood...for display at the Baghdad Museum.

Neurotic much?

Sofia,

Thanks for not ranting :)  Would you mind elaborating on this?  I'm curious as to what led the analysts to this conclusion.

Peace,

Sparrow

I think I screwed up the quoting thing again.  What's wrong with me that I can't figure this out?!
