[slm] Inshallah i hope everyone is doing well and maximizing their time during these blessed days. Some may have seen that ayesha is advertizing a conference about muslims and health issues. Does anyone have any questions about anything that would fall under that topic? Especially for the women, the concern for maintaining modesty is one that comes up. I wanted to see what comes up the most and try to research those questions a little bit inshallah. Also if anyone has personal experience or advice on how they handled situations, that would be really helpful too ;D Jazak allahuma khair :) [wlm] Ruqayyah |

Ruqayya slm, I received this email the other day. I'd appreciate it if you could answer her? I get alot of emails from medical practitioners just like this asking about the "islamic views" on healthcare and patients and stuff. Is there a pamphlet or something out there? ------------------------------------------------------------------ "Helen Morris" <helenmorris23@yahoo.co.uk> Subject: Medical treatment for Muslims Hey There im a first year nursing student doing some research into aspects of healthcare and how it effects Muslim people and have just visited your webite and was wondering if you could help me with some information? There are several aspect i am looking into: 1) Does the family situation effect the sort of medical treatment a family may recieve... i.e women only seeing female Dr's. 2) Does the size of the family hinder any medical treatment that may be required. i.e money, gender, language 3) Does muslim history prevent people going to the Dr's 4) are there certain medical aspects that effect a muslim's life i.e diet, lifestyle, religion, age, customs. i would be gratful if you could help. Many thanks Helen ----------------------------------------------------------- also maybe at that conf u can address menstruation and health things.. like eating habits, should you exercise or not.. stuff like that.. |

[slm] Ruqayyah In the mental health circle, the usage of hypnosis is gaining popularity both as a diagnostic and curative purposes. Would appreciate it if you can seek the Islamic assessment of such a method since hypnosis involves the manipulation of the consciousness. Shukran. Wassalam. |

:-)Ruqayyah [slm] Hope everything is going well for you...Thank-you for the question here... hope you might find it helpful. That is the first thing that comes to my mind concerning health issues for Muslim women. In reguards to menstration, not only from a modesty standpoint but also on the effect of the hormonal adjustments that are taking place. Under Islam..... are some of the adjustments that are afforded for a woman during the time of her menses not just due to the modesty ...... but mental and physical effects that hormonal fluctuations have on the entire body (ie. is it considered similar to illness). What are the best steps advised for women during such periods (such as, exercise, diet, etc). And are there any other practices that are strongly suggested to be helpful. Many things are restricted at this time. Generally under any other difficulties we are advised on offering Salat and submission to Allah. But with rapid changes in hormones which can trigger some discontentments both physically as well as mentally and emotionally, what things are advised as practices at this time to help with the discomfort. I guess in addition to this I would be interested myself as well..... about the point of menopause for Muslim women. And for the same reasons, the hormonal effects. I have heard so many women who have offered just horrible stories on what termoil they have felt at the point of going through menopause. (due to hormonal effects and adjustments etc). Hope you may understand what I was meaning with the questions here..... Insha Allah...... and if not please ask me for any clarifications. Take care..............Jazak Allahu Khairan [wlm] |

[/quote] [slm] With my first kid, we kinda requested that no male personnel come into the room unless they were absolutely necessary. After that, the only male who came in was the anesthesiologist (I KNOW I botched the spelling of that word :P). My labor was very long and very difficult and the khimar on my head went out of the window after a while. With the second child, it ended up being an emergency c-section, so again, after a while off with the khimar. I was out like a light so I really have no idea what happened. During the hospital stays I generally kept my khimar on, and I had a light gown with long sleeves that I was comfortable sleeping in to put over the hospital gown. I generally kept my room door shut and/or the curtain drawn...because it is annoying, all of those people walking up and down the halls and all of the people that they send into your room...tv people, food people, we need your blood, we need to change your sheets, etc. It is very difficult to maintain your privacy in the hospital. And alot of times they don't even knock, or they knock and walk right in, no regards to whether you're decent or not. So I found it was just better to maintain a perpetual state of dress. I even slept in my hijab. I realize they all have jobs to do, but... I was fortunate enough with my second and third kids to have no one sharing the room with me, so I didn't have to deal with a roomate's visitors. That was kind of nice. |

When my mom's friend had her baby, she only had female nurses, as for my friend, she had to have a Ceserian, she was not as fortunate to have an all-female operation, so she covered as much as she could (she covered her hair and arms). As for me, when ever I have to have a male doctor I show only what he needs to check. If he needs to check my heart, that's all he sees, the area of my heart. Recently, I had to go to the doctor because of a swelling in my throat. I did not remove my hijab, I only loosened it for him to see the swelling which turned out to be a goiter after many opinions. Btw, does anyone have any information about goiters??? YSII :-) |
