Day of Arafaah Ayat

I have come upon some conflicting info. Some say that one of the special things about the Day of Arafaah is that the last verse of the Qu'ran was revealed. So I was wondering what it was.

Read what I got from Islam Q&A:

Al-Karmaani said in al-Burhaan: the order of the soorahs as it is
now is the same as that in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz which is with Allaah.
This is the order in which the Prophet  (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) used to review the soorahs of the Qur'aan
he had received so far with Jibreel each year. In the year in which
he died, he reviewed it with him twice, and the last aayahs to be
revealed were (interpretation of the meaning): ";And be afraid
of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allaah'
[al-Baqarah 2:281]. Jibreel commanded the Prophet  (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) to put this between the aayahs dealing with
riba and those dealing with loans.

I thought it was this one!

In Al-Saheehayn it was reported from;Umar ibn al-Khattaab
(may Allaah be pleased with him) that a Jewish man said to him,
O Ameer al-Mu'mineen, there is an aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an Eid (festival).

Umar said, Which aayah? He said: This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam
as your religion. [al-Maadah 5:3 interpretation of the meaning]. Umar said, We know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It was when he was standing in Arafaah on a Friday.

Kathy, if I remember correctly, that is a misnomer.  The ayah "This day I have perfected your religion ..." was revealed on the day of Arafah, but it was not the last ayah which was revealed to the Prophet (saw).

Check Ibn Kathir for more info.

Wallahu a'lam.

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, sister Kathy -

Allahu A'lim, I don't know about your question. But wanted to add more about the ayah from Surah Ma'idah.

On the Day of Arafah at the Prophet's last Hajj (S), he delivered his famous farewell khutbah/sermon, in which he pretty much gave a synopsis of Islaam. Please note, however, that this was *not* the last khutbah that the Prophet (S) ever gave. It was his last Hajj. Allahu A'lim.

Some quotes from the Hajj khutbah:

" Time has verily come full turn, to how it was the day God created the heavens and the earth…"

"O people, it is true that you have certain rights over your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under God's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers."

"Treat others justly so that no one would be unjust to you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds."

"God has forbidden you to take usury/interest (riba), therefore all riba obligations shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer inequity."

"O people, your Lord is One, and your father is one: all of you are from Adam, and Adam was (made) from dust. The noblest of you in God’s sight is the most God-conscious: an Arab has no merit over non-Arab, and a non-Arab has no merit over an Arab, except by God-consciousness. Have I delivered the message? -- O God, be my witness."

At this, the people said, "Yes."

He said, "Then let whomever is present tell whomever is absent." In some narrations, he said: "Then may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly."

Because this sermon was heard by literally thousands of his followers, there are slightly different variations of it. All with the same message, however. Allahu A'lim.

I'm not sure which came first, the Prophet's khutbah or the revelation of Surah Ma'idah:3, but according to Ibn Katheer's tafseer, the two occurred on the same day, Allahu'Alim.

"This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islaam as your deen." [Ma'idah:3]

It's said that when this verse was revealed, the Prophet (S) was sitting on his donkey/riding animal, and the power of the revelation was so intense (which always manifested itself in a powerful way), that it made the donkey stop and/or the Prophet (S) had to get off of it.

When Umar (r) heard this verse from the Prophet (S) on Yawm-al-Arafah, he started to cry. When the Prophet (S) asked him why he was crying, he said, "Our religion is being perfected for us. Now it is perfect, and nothing is perfected but that it is bound to deteriorate." The Prophet (S) said, "You have said the truth." [at-Tabari]

Also, when Umar (r) was the Khaleefah, one of the Jews said to him, "O Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen, there is a verse in your Book that you all raad, and had it been revealed to us, we would have made it our 'Eid/day of celebration." On that, Umar replied, "By God, I know when and where this verse was revealed and where the Messenger of God, Sal-Allahu 'Alayhi was-sallam, was at that time. It was the day of Arafah, and I was at Arafah, by God."

The Day of 'Arafah is the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, the day before 'Eid-ul-'Adha, and the day the Prophet (S) recommended us to fast.  He also recommended that we say takbeer (Allahu Akbar), tahleel (Laa ilaaha il-Allah), and tahmeed (al-Hamdulillah) throughout the 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah.

The companions of the Prophet (S) used to say it out loud in the marketplace during these days, until all the Muslims around them started to say it as well.  Allahu A'lim.

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (God is the greatest, 2x)
Laa ilaaha il-Allah (there is no God but God)
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Walillaah hil-Hamd (and all praise belongs to God).
