Cohen, a Jewish attorney and advocate for the rights of Palestinians, lectured yesterday at the World Assembly of Muslim Youth in Jeddah on “The Infringement of Muslim Rights in the US and Defensive Measures”. Cohen started his lecture with a greeting to the FBI and CIA which he feels are undoubtedly keeping tabs on his activities. Undeterred, he asserted that the United States is undergoing “difficult times under bad leadership.” “US history is replete with moments of greatness and shame,” he continued. “What is happening in the United States now is shameful. Arabs, Muslims and Southeast Asians are under siege. Tens of thousands have been detained and jailed under the guise of national security. The people of the United States must resist if the constitution is to survive. The Bush administration is an anti-people administration. We are going through a very ugly period in America right now. However, I have faith in Americans, they are a good people. We will survive after Bush and Ashcroft are gone.” Cohen compared the arrest and detention of tens of thousands of Arabs and Muslims to the internment of the Japanese into camps during World War II. “The issue in the occupied territories is not about Islam and Judaism, but about occupation and settlement,” he said regarding the issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Israel has the most weapons of mass destruction of any country in the region. For some reason, under the current administration, the lives of Israelis are seen to have a higher value than those of Palestinians,” he said. “The issue in Iraq is not about disarmament nor regime change. It is about political power for George Bush at home. Bush’s entire motive since Sept. 11 has been improving his standing in the polls in the US, and proving his power.” Cohen is known for his successful defense of Mousa Abu Marzook, the head of the political wing of Hamas, whose extradition from the United States was sought by Israel in 1995. He has also represented scores of other Muslim and Palestinian activists and imams throughout the United States and elsewhere. Since Sept. 11, he has represented numerous Muslims, largely Arabs and Southeast Asians, swept up by federal investigations throughout the United States. On other occasions he has represented journalists, artists and attorneys who have been singled out for prosecution on the basis of their beliefs and speech. Cohen filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court in Washington, D.C. against Ariel Sharon and other Israeli leaders, President Bush and various weapons manufacturers and other organizations in the United States, seeking damages and injunctive relief on behalf of a group of Palestinian-Americans who have been killed, injured, and tortured, whose businesses have been destroyed and whose land has been confiscated for the establishment of Jewish settlements.
