HUMAN CLONING - THE ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE by Dr Abdul Majid Katme** Date: Sunday 16th February Time: 11.00 am - 1.00 pm Last month there were claims by a controversial company linked to a UFO sect that it had produced the world's first "cloned human baby". Most people have greeted their claims with scepticism and there have been calls for the process to be outlawed. They have already cloned sheep ('Dolly the Sheep') and monkeys. The significance is immense be it from a scientific, economic or moral point of view and as Muslims we naturally want to ask what the Islamic perspective on cloning is? Is it forbidden, is it possible or is it acceptable? What is cloning? How is it done? Who gains? Who are the losers? Is there anything in the Qur'an & Sunnah dealing with cloning of animals or humans? Should I be worried? Should I give a damn?! Insha'Allah Dr Abdul Majid Katme will shed light on many of these pertinent questions. ** Dr. A. Majid Katme is a medical doctor by profession and an active member of the Islamic Medical Association in Britain. He has also practiced psychiatry in the UK for over 10 years. He is the Muslim coordinator for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children and the Muslim trustee for the National Family Trust. In addition to several conferences on Islam and medical related issues, he has spoken on Al-Jazeera and other satellite TV stations. He has defended the family, the unborn, chastity, and motherhood at United Nations conferences on population, women, and human settlements worldwide.
