Ok girls, let's talk makeup! I've been coming here awhile now and I still haven't seen much posts regarding make-up ???
Now I'm big on putting gook on my face....not too much though ( and of course in the home)....BUT I still have not found the ultimate foundation. You know, the kind that gives you the "flawless" but without the flaky/ Tammy Faye look??? Any ideas?

Emerald pondering----> (How do guys really feel about the gook?Maybe I'll head off and ask them since their room is soooo.......shall I say.......SNOOZY!)

The most important thing about applying foundation is the condition of your skin.

It must be absolutely clean and for us older folk- if you apply a good moisturizer, the foundation is sooo smooth.

finally !!! let's talk  CTM (cleansing toning moisturizing) , now i think that it's better to try out a ctm regimen and try to avoid the foundation bit or just keep it for special occassions.  the reason that foundation flakes is b/c it isn't the right kind or face may be dry and stuff.. so a good moisturizer before foundation is always a must... and the best i ever tried was moisture whip from maybelline i think

now the only problem with CTM is u need discipline to do it day and night.. argh.. and who has that... the best kind i heard from the british sisters is liz earle unfortunately they don't have it here in the states!!

asalamu alykum,

CTM is really really really harddd to keep up with but the months when you are regular its all good but the days you skip it really shows up... maybelline stuff is good lol and whats the other CVS kind.. i can't think of it right now but that works.
But my biggest problem is finding the right CTM suff, lately aveeno seems to be working for me..

You don't need foundation :)  Of course then, you need flawless skin, which is really not that hard to achieve.

First of all, you must drink lots of water, eat an egg every now and then, drink milk (love life), eat bananas....you know, good stuff?

Then, you use a good natural exfoliator...the desis out there might know what ooptan is.....that stuff is MAGIC...I mean it's really effective (although it smells kind of iffy, which is why we move on to the next step)...A great great GREAT cleanser in the mornings is (yes my favorite) honey and lemon...works well to make sure all blemishes go away faster.  At night...now this is a little weird, but it gives you nice soft skin:  Saffron and Milk....a little will do...apply with some cotton.

Don't forget to use a very good moisturizer.

To make a long story short, Mac makes good foundation :)

Wasalaam.

Wooohooo make up  :-*

I am one of the un-disciplined ones so many a bottle of toner and moisturiser have been left on the shelf (figuratively and literally speaking lol).  Until someone recommended me this particular brand of facial treatments.  The brand is called Doronko.  It's from Japan and the facial cleanser is absolutely lovely.  I have oily skin and the cleanser cleans well without giving you that tight feeling nor the oily feeling.  The cleanser is made from volcano ash so no placenta for you :)  Doronko has a moisturiser that also acts as a toner so u can skip the toner part !!!!  At night, I have my own regime :)  I use a bottle of Hazeline snow cream which I earlier put in the fridge.  After washing my face, I apply the cream.  Refreshing and keeps this aging face of mine supple :)

About make up.  Well, a beautician friend of mine says that all of us have uneven skin tones so we need a skin tone base.  Mine is purple and yes I must admit that it evens out my skin.  After that, if u use liquid foundation, what she did was to put an ice cubes (abt 3) in a bowl and she also put the foundation in another small plate.  She place the face sponge or cotton swabs on the ice cubes then she dab the foundation with the cold swab before applying it on the face.  If u have oily faces, use an oil deterrent lotion first before anything.  After foundation, always end it with loose powder because we are not professionals and loose powder gives a light and even finish since u brush on the powder and can brush off the excess ones.

Just a note : I use to like MAC but MAC is a studioline make up so it is very strong.  Not a good idea for sensitive skin.  Plus, MAC is also one of those who contribute to the Jewish cause.  I used to like Stila products too but stopped for the same reason as before......this is not a political statement :) Just info for those who wanted to know.

Last but not least, I am absolutely gaga over the new coloured lipgloss. Wohooo

are those those things they sell in stores with like three colors and they look like eye shadow but they're really supposed to be used like blush to even out skin coloring.  ok well like how does that color stuff work in theory? cause i just never get it , i saw yellow green blue etc!!!

what do u guys think about cloths versus regular bottles stuff?

one thing i wouldn't recommend for dryer skin is a cleanser and toner in one.. i think it really dries out the skin

hmm now that we're on a roll anyone have any idea about this pore controversy.. there are 'pore openers' on the market to clean ur pores and stuff and then there are 'pore closers' to make ur pores appear smaller thus to make ur face look smoother !???  maan

wow ppl, wat is this?!!!

Oh my gosh, i dont think i've eva used ctm as a regime in my life!!  What's wrong with jus plain soap or occasionally just any bottled face wash?!  Why do we have to make our lives so complicated?!

As for the make-up....!! Ok so foundation or loose powder is a must on some occassions, but wearing make-up all the time is bad for the skin too.

Oh this is so depressing, I never understand why ppl buy into stupid 'beauty regimes' and all the commercialism.  Kinda of makes me parnaoid cos then I never kw if I'm missing out on something!

I completely agree with the 'drink so much water', 'eat loads of fruit', 'get enough sleep', and ah yes 'exercise'.  Surely all thats enough?

So ladies is all this ctm business really worth it?  I never thought it was, just a waste of my money.  If any of u can convince me otherwise, well, who kws, I may change my ways  ;) :

:o WHOAAAA.....I don't know whether you guys helped me or confused me!  :D
Now I have to admit that I'm a low maintenance kinda gal even though I'm into make-up ( My drawer is overflowing with the stuff ) but the stuff you guys are talkin' about is too much for me. Mixing foods and getting into a daily regimen? Nahhhh....What I'm looking for is simplicity.
I don't know about you guys but I've noticed that everytime I get a product, it's great at first but then somehow I acquire an immunity to it!? (maybe I'm too paranoid) Seriously though, I like the St.Ives apricot facial scrub. I also soemtimes use the mint face mask. I've noticed it does decrease the size of pores a little but the blackheads are still visible.....So I figure if you can't beat 'em, cover 'em! ( I wonder why women are cursed with wanting to look good. We really suffer don't we?!) Anyhoooooo.......I'm thinking of actually putting out the big bucks at the mall for some Este Lauder or some other brand like it. What do you guys think? Drug store or Mall?

Honey As Healer!

This might be off topic, but subhanallah just wanted to share this.
Allah says in the Quran, "And the lord inspired the bee, saying: Take your habitations in the mountains and in the trees ad in what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)'. There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying color wherein is healing for men. Verily in this is indeed a sign for people who think." [16:68-69]

Ancient Healer Effective in Treating Infected Skin Lesions

Jem Bonnievale was 15 when he contracted meningococcal septicemia caused by an infection of Neisseria meningitidis. By the time the British teenager reached the hospital, he had multiple purple batches on his legs and fingers, which rapidly progressed to tissue death.

Both legs were amputated below the knee as well as fingers on both hands. He endured multiple skin grafts and suffered for months with non-healing infected sores. His case was extreme and difficult to treat because of the severe pain it caused. "I can't even begin to explain how painful it was just to have a small piece of dressing changed.

The nurses tried everything to make it easier, like changing the dressing in the bath, but it was agony," said Jem. Over the next six months the success of the grafts was variable and the sores showed heavy growth of Pseudomonas and Staphlococcus aureus. All traditional treatments were tried without success.

When nothing else had any effect on the chronic infected sores, clinical nurse Cheryl Dunford and her colleagues turned to honey. Dressing pads impregnated with sterilized active manuka honey from New Zealand were applied to one leg and a traditional dressing to the other leg. Within a few days, the honey dressed leg showed a reduction of wound bacteria. Both legs were then treated with the honey dressings. Within 10 weeks, all lesions were healed. Jem was released from the hospital, fitted with artificial legs and is getting on with his life.

The use of honey as medicine is mentioned in the most ancient written records. Today scientists and doctors are rediscovering the effectiveness of honey as a wound treatment. Peter Molan, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemisty at Waikato University, New Zealand has been on the forefront of honey research for 20 years. He heads the university's Honey Research Unit, which is internationally recognized for its expertise in the antimicrobial properties of honey. Clinical observations and experimental studies have established that honey has effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It painlessly removes pus, scabs and dead tissue from wounds and stimulates new tissue growth. "Randomized trials have shown that honey is more effective in controlling infection in burn wounds than silver sulphadiazine, the antibacterial ointment most widely used on burns in hospitals" says Dr. Molan. The significance of the case of the British teenager, as reported in the June issue of Nursing Times, is that it is the first case in which honey was used on multiple meningococcal skin lesions. The antibacterial action was evident as the mixed infection of Pseudomonas and Enterococcus cleared from the lesions in a few weeks and the number of colonizing staphylococci diminished to a harmless level.

Dr. Molan believes that if honey were used from the start in cases of meningococcal septicemia, there would be far less tissue damage resulting. "The remarkable ability of honey to reduce inflammation and mop up free radicals should halt the progress of the skin damage like it does in burns, as well as protecting from infection setting in," said Dr. Molan. "At present, people are turning to honey when nothing else works. But there are very good grounds for using honey as a therapeutic agent of first choice."

Researchers believe that the therapeutic potential of honey is grossly underutilized. It is widely available in most communities and although the mechanism of action of several of its properties remains obscure and needs further investigation, the time has now come for conventional medicine to look at this traditional remedy. With increasing interest in the use of alternative therapies and as the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria spreads, honey may finally receive its due recognition as a wound healer.

Ooh, I really don't go for that ctm routine.  I can't seem to find any toners without alcohol in them (well, actually, I read in my Body Shop book that the some toners have alcohol in them and I can't be bothered to search for that elusive alcohol free toner!).

I do moisterise.  I have an SPF in mine so no sunrays can age my skin.  Well, try and stall the aging process anyway :D

for fresh glowing skin a gd face scrub can work wonders and only need be used once a week.  St Ives Apricot scrub is great as mentioned by a sis already.

I am an advocate for cheap make-up.  I read that there isn't always much difference between the designer brands and cheaper ones.  E.g.  Miss Sporty mascara is great and Bonne Bell lip balms.  Plus, the glittery packaging I adore!  save your pennies for a good moisturiser.

Eyelash curlers are fab too.  They instantly open your eyes and make you look wide awake.

But the best routine is water and fruit.  It keeps you healthy on the outside and in!  :-*

Noooooo.  They are goey stuff in tubes :) What they will do is to put your skin under a cosmetic analyser and then there will be an image of your skin tones (mine looked like a badly hit Afghani cavernous area).  Then they checked out for the colour undertones.  This will determine what would be the best colour for you.
what do u guys think about cloths versus regular bottles stuff?
The US actually can get blushers in towelette form.  Problem with cloth kind is you need to have a steady and deft hand.  Plus, each cloth is heavy, meaning the texture of the stuff on your face might be thick.  For bottle stuff, its always good to pour a bit onto a plate-like thingy then use a cosmetic sponge :)
one thing i wouldn't recommend for dryer skin is a cleanser and toner in one.. i think it really dries out the skin
You are very right.  In fact for drier skin, the product I mentioned is good.  It combines toner with moisturiser so the toner is minimal.  But for dry skin always use a night-moisturiser.  This allows your skin to absorb moisture before facing the harsh sun.  Also it will be good for dry skinners to use facial lotion.  My mom has dry skin and her fave is this gentle lotion from Indonesia.  It is exotic, smells fantastic, uses herbal essence plus its free from non-halal ingredients :)  I have ultra oily skin so......no lotions waaaahhhhhhhh except for night time moisturiser :) Oil free of course lol.
hmm now that we're on a roll anyone have any idea about this pore controversy.. there are 'pore openers' on the market to clean ur pores and stuff and then there are 'pore closers' to make ur pores appear smaller thus to make ur face look smoother !???  maan
Ok lets talk pores.  These are lil buggeroos that allow your skin to breathe.  But for some people the pores may look like uhhhh kryptonite hit sites  :-/  Never fear, Olin is here to save the face.  After a while, dirt tends to clog up our pores.  So do sebums which may cause pimples and in some people blackheads.  So.  To get rid of these unwanted visitors in your facial craters, you need to open up the pores.  Original soap or cleanser won't do it that is why you need to scrub your face routinely.  But make sure you know the technique of scrubbing.  Don't rub the scrub hard cos this cause abrasion.  You have to gently do it in circular motion.  However, due to aging and the stretching of the face, some people may have big pores which can be rather visible.  Not only that, big pores trap dirt and impurities causing other skin problems.  So some cosmetic companies develop pore closers.  This works in some way by improving skin elasticity, so I heard.  My momma uses a cheap alternative.  Se grinds cold cucumber and plasters it on her face.  She swears by it.  Myself ? No big pores so I cant speak authoritatively lol.

Aight...thats all for the moment ladies.

[slm],
Well, I logged on the board after quite a while and found one of my favorite topics. There is one thing I would like to share with everyone. I have pretty oily skin acne prone skin. I have tried every medicine, you can possibly use and nothing works. The only thing i havent tried yet is Accutane and I have no intentions of it.
Anyways, there is this brand whihc they advertise on TV all the time and it actually helped. ITs called Murad. I hate the ctm routine also but their products are so refreshing that I dont mind doing all that. They are a little bit expensive but since I have wasted money on all this other stuff, and it hasnt worked, i think Murad is worth it. I know some people wouldnt do all this but not everybody has problem free skin.
About makeup, I think as long as you have a good base(foundation) , it doesnt matter what kind of other products you use. I personally dont wear a whole lot of make up but I like Clinique's foundation and Maybelline mascara, eyepencil etc.
That was my two cents after a long time.

Asalaamu alaikum sisters......hehehe  nice topic. As usual this make up thing always has its pros and cons, in the end I always say its your personal decision, if you feel umcomfortable wearing it then don't and vice versa.

I wouldn't say that I am goo goo gaa gaa over make up and that it's a must for me I once heard some one say "Less is Best" and that works for me. I do the CTW (cleanse / tone/ Moisturize) routine though becoz I think that's the most important step to any other facial applications (namely the makeup)

This is quite funny though while reading the posts I realized that I'd forgotten to CTW so at once I went and did it ......jazak Allah for reminding me :-/

Anyways as one sister mentioned there is no need to put out *mucho dineros/ big bucks* on make-up products becoz believe it or not they are essentially all the same.

I would also endorse the Apricot Facial Scrub I've been using it for over 8 years now and I think it works and it's not expensive at all..........if you wanna spend some big bucks invest in a good moisturizer there are many out on the markets today and the important thing when chosing a moisturizer is first identifying your skin type and getting the right one for it.....

I also like the ponds *All Day Oil Control Moisture Cream* it leaves your face looking nice and fresh and "matte" just as a foundation does, so this is an alternative to the foundation........you don't even have to use powder becoz it gives you that look also......and as usual lots of water, exercise, sleep and healthy foods especially fruits and most of your problems are solved.

Physical beauty is something we can *make-up* quite literally but as we all know true beauty comes from the inside and at the end of the we have to be happy with who we are......okie and that's the most important.........

For e.g. Michael Jackson wasn't happy and look at the freak he turned out to be...........btw anybody watched the documentary on him.........I think it was good.........sad to see the kind of individual he turned out to be......but!!!!!!!

that's my contribution

I thought I would give my 2cents on this.. I personally love experimenting with makeup, just for fun, although I dont wear much.
ok tell me how is Aveeno?  ???I just bought the 'skin brightening' it sounds interesting. And what compact/foundation are good? My sister uses origins and i liked mac for special occasions but they both support Israel so we stopped. Any good alternative? Also any good lip colors? ???

ok i cant go without vaseline..day and night. Its simply great for your lips and u can also put it on dry areas on your body(elbow, knee) before u sleep. Apricot Scrub is also great. The best thing I agree ofcourse is fruits/veg and ofcourse lots of water. Surma is also great for the eyes.. 8)I hear the sahaba used to wear it. Anyone know the hadith? Many people in Pakistan use basin (gramflour) w/ rosewater. It seems to work great for some and it can also be worse for some.  :-*

May Allah (swt) make you all just as beautiful in the inside as you are on the outside. A'meen

Okay, now that I'm pretty sure there are no brothers left reading this thread...

my attempts at being girly are fairly recent :P, so I have a lot of questions....

okay, don't laugh at me, but I can only wink my left eye.. how weird is that?!  any tips on how to put eyeliner on without blinding myself?

Also, I use the liquid stuff, but it never turns out smooth, and I usually end up looking like I have a black eye :(  should I use a pencil or something?  What about those crayon thingies?

Another question.. any recommendations for smooth/softer skin?  I use a loofah, but is there anything else I can do?

My hands are soo rough.. someone told me to rub vaseline on, and then wear gloves.. but.. ewww :P  any *other* suggestions?

jazakam Allahu khayran ladiez...

ps -- 2 things I can recommend:

-- *any* kind of body butter.. is awesome ;)

Eye liner pencils are sooo much easier than the liquid stuff. you can make it as thick or thin as you want.

When appling just pull the skin down taught  under the eye and apply the lower level. To make you eyes appear larger, on the top lid start above the iris and work out.

Then ever so slightly blend.

vaseline and gloves... nothing works better!

i guess i can talk about make up considering i have still have make-up dating back 5 years or longsr :) my favorite aspect of makeup is lipstick.. i guess i just love the fact that i can change the color of my lips haha ..yeah so usually when im out in public i wear lipglorss  because it keeps my lips mosturiezed...and  when i wear lipstick i use this new brand by loreal call Endless.....i like it becasue it dosent dry out your lips and it kinda stays on your lips  for awhile ..buts  if you want that long lasting lipcolor you should try something else
...which leads me to my question is their a long lasting lip color out there that dosen't dry out your lips and has an array of good colors?
My second qustion is what is the difference btw mosturizer ,toner and cleanser?? and why should you use them all together..what are theri benefits?
Also any good eyeliner pencils out there?? ..i hate the liquid stuff....gives me eye problems and has anybody tried those eyeshaow crayon things are they better than the traditonal compact eyeshadows? oh and one more thing does anybody used the IMAN makeup products...how do you like those??  ok well i think thats enough of me talking about makeup :)

cleanser- A soap or soap like product that cleans the dirt and make up off your face.

toner- A product that closes the pores (not realy closes, but almost) on your face.  Cold Water will do the same thing.

mosturizer- a product that hydrates your face and often protects it, if you get one with sunscreen... It is a must on older or dry faces if you are going to apply foundation. If you can...get an oil free kind.

salaam sister emerald and to everyone else!

i thought i would tell you about this magic product that i use.
i am a make-up artist and am pakistani , i am also soon to be a mother of two...after many years of searching i have found the answer to my quest for a perfect foundation which for me had to be sheer and easy to apply but with enough coverage to hide uneven tone with a natural finish. the product is made bu MAC but you will not find it in department stores except if you visit thier MAC SHOPS. the name of the range is called FACE AND BODY FOUNDATION. it comes in a plastic bottle and will last you ages!!! it gives a lovely dewy finish and is so light!!1
also their new concealers are brilliant too!!! i use both together although the concealer is just used for under my eyes. this is also a new range of concealer called  SELECT COVER UP.  most normal MAC  stores or department stores will have them.

i have combination skin but during this pregnancy i found my skin became very dehydrated. so i have been treating my skin to one of the best lept secrets in the beauty industry. DR HAUSHKA ROSE CREAM- you can use this under your foundations. but this is an all natural day cream which is wonderful!!!! simply wonderful!!!

I just wanted to let you all know that mac is owned by Estee Lauder, a product that aids Israel in killing Muslims so please keep that in mind. I am sure a life is more important than a good makeup product.  For more information go to http://www.inminds.com/boycott-estee-lauder.html
You can also get more info in www.inminds.com in the boycott Israel section.

1 word: CONCEALER.

wow I can't believe some people go through all that regularly.

I have easy ways and I only do it if my face feels like it needs it. I put vitamin E when it is dry. Rose water for toning. And I think it doesn't need extra cleaning as a muslim we are washing so much really.

and concealer for everything else. ahaha

Drink lots of water, get some sun, eat raw fruits and vegetables. Cut out white sugar
(use honey instead).

And try to avoid pro-occupation products, like:
MAC
Origins
Maybelline
Clinique
Estee Lauder
Loreal
Revlon
Lancome
Victoria's Secret
The Limited
Lerners
etc.

Assalam Alaikum
I don't know anything about the science of make up and it's effects on the skin but from my observations I find that the use of make up over time damages the natural glow us woman are suppose to have.

There are many women out there who say they just can't be seen without make up.  If you see them without make up their skin looks lifeless, but immediately when they apply make up their faces take on another look.  I don't think the skin can breath.

I have used some make up during my life but mainly I would apply just some lipstick and colour to my eyes but I have never used foundation nor any skin toners and cleansers etc.   I wash my face with water and a soft loofa.   My friend told me the other day that I don't seem to age, and I am 36years old.  I still just have that natural glow and no wrinkles.

Wrinkles no doubt come from how make up is normally applied and how it is taken off.

I recommend any mothers out there to tell their young daughters not to over do it.

That's my opinion anyway.  I had thought once that foundation is like honey, you apply it to your face and it will never harden but it is sticky enough to attract all the dust and dirty particles in the air.

Katrina

Salaam,
If you'd like to see a full listing of pro-occupation companies, just scroll down the
page of the link posted earlier, for the homepage.  There, you'll see a list of companies.
To see exactly what products to avoid, click on the link.

For example, if you click on The Limited, you'll see all of the associated companies (of
which, is Victoria's Secret). It's amazing how many companies are actually associated
(ie, under the same ownership). For example, Old Navy is owned by Gap (which is on the
list).

wow lots of companies are owned by other companies. Its too many...we need a list of companies that we Can go to!

I was thinking over here they make a big deal about wearing sunscreen,  but in countries such as Pakistan where there is even more sun barely anyone wears sunscreen and their skin is just fine...

i can't believe how many of u guys use eyelash curlers they're so scary looking - like torture instruments :P

what's a good mascara to use - i'd like one that's smudge/water proof but that comes off easily before making wudu, and one that doesn't make your eyelashes look all clumpy.  is clear mascara any good?

If any of you suffer from acne, you should try this treatment.  I've had acne since I was 12 years old and I'm now 24.  This regimen is the only one that has every worked.  It's absolutely fabulous.
Neutrogena On-The-Spot Acne treatment in the daytime followed by Neutrogen Healthy Skin lotion (it has alpha hydroxy acids).  At night, I use Neutrogen acne mask.  I sound like a Neutrogena commercial, but their products are great.  Other benzoyl peroxide brands are not as effective.
Just remember to start slow, because this treatment can be pretty harsh on the skin.  But I've been on it for four months and my skin is finally beautiful!!!  This treatment also helps get rid of blackheads, whiteheads and discoloration from previous breakouts.

For more thorough info on this regimen, go to www.acne.org
