[slm] Germany, France said to seek U.N. peacekeepers for Iraq instead of war Berlin-AP -- Germany and France are reportedly working on an Iraq peace plan that includes three times more weapons inspectors, reconnaissance flights and U-N peacekeepers throughout the country. A weekly German magazine (Der Spiegel) reports the plan would have international peacekeepers "in effect take control of the country for years." In addition, all of Iraq would become a no-fly zone and Iraq's neighbors would be asked to crack down on smuggled oil exports. A German government spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined comment on the report but says the two countries are working on peaceful alternatives. The magazine says German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder (GEHR'-hahrd SHROH'-dur) sees a need to move beyond his strict anti-war stand, which has angered the United States. The magazine reports Germany and France are sounding out other critics of the U-S approach. http://www.kplctv.com/Global/story.asp?s=1121100 [wlm] |
