A merciless offer kills a helpless lover.
[ Exit an expat, with dreams killed by his sponsor, by Saleh Fareed, Special to Arab News, Feb 9th 2003]

JEDDAH, 9 February 2003 — A young expatriate’s long-cherished dream ended with his death last week in Jeddah. His sponsor had refused his request for an exit/re-entry visa.

The man’s best friend, who prefers to remain anonymous, told Arab News that 29-year-old Muneer died because his sponsor refused to let him go home to get married — unless he paid an exorbitant amount of money.

“Muneer was so excited to have the chance to come to Saudi Arabia,” the friend explained.

“His goal was to go home and marry his long time fiancée, who he adored. He came to the Kingdom and worked hard, saving his salary with no thought of what he would eat or wear. He only thought of his coming marriage.”

Muneer was sustained by the memory of his fiancée who had told him: “Please stay beside me. I do not want your money or anything else. I just want you to be with me, and that’s all.”

The friend said that Muneer nevertheless insisted on coming here to make money.

“He was counting the days, months and years. He was so anxious to get home and marry his fiancée.”

Muneer and his colleagues, he continued, were unlucky in being involved with a sponsor who had no heart, and whose main concern was how much money he could squeeze from his workers.

“After working hard for three years,” the friend continued, “Muneer saved enough money to make his dream come true. As was required, Muneer filed his request for his annual vacation a month in advance. For some reason, his request was denied by his sponsor, who told him he must pay a large sum equal to the money Muneer had saved for his wedding. Muneer could not believe what was happening. He told his sponsor that he could not afford to pay such an amount. His sponsor’s reply was: ‘You pay and you go. If you do not pay, I will never let you go’.”

Muneer prayed for a solution but his merciless sponsor would not change his mind.

“Because of anger and frustration, Muneer could not sleep and eat. One night he came to his room and fell exhausted on his bed. When the dawn prayer was called, Muneer — always the first one up for the early morning prayer — was found dead.

Inna lillah wa inna ilaihi raji'oon.

That is so tragic!  :o

Moral of the story: Love and Money are Rizq. But they don't always come together...

It didn't come for Muneer.. and neither did it come for his sponsor.

Allahua'lam

P.S. Isn't there a worker's union that can help with such cases? At least.. this sponsor would not repeat such a heartless act again.

This is pretty common in Saudi Arabia - denying worker's their wages and not granting them leave so they can go visit home. Especially tragic is the harassment of women from the subcontinent who come to work as live-in maids.
