Assalamu'alaikum :-)

I'm sorry if this was discussed before... I only remembered a similar thread in the British Souq....

So yeah... where do U think, is the best place to live in the US?

Here are some guidelines:

1) Da'wah Opportunites
   a) Contributor to Da'wah (especially for a woman)
   b) Receipient of Da'wah

2) Education
   a) Children's Education
   b) Adult Islamic Education

3) Social Climate
   a) Culture
   b) Norms
   c) state of the ummah of that place
   d) non-Muslims

4) Safety
   a) Low Crime rate

5) Job Opportunities

6) Amenities, Facilities, Accessabilities

7) Others

And *ahem* does anyone know anything just anything at all abt kentucky? Pretty pleaseeee?? (refer to my other thread :))

Jazakumullahu khair
Thanks :-)

Albany sux.. :) Trust me it totally does, in all 7 categories. I could go into detail but don't want to be too negative since I'm still stuck here unfortunately ;) I'd suggest the places where Muslims are populous like New York City /Long Island /New Jersey, Washington D.C./Virginia, Greater Chicago, Southern California. Hmm Boston is nice as well as Michigan. Houston? All places have their positives and negatives, but what really makes or breaks a place is if they have a good Imam and good dawah activities. Kentucky I heard has a small community that's developed from students/professors that have gone there for studies. I think there's someone I know from there going to school here, I'll check it out inshallah!

as salaamu alaykum,

I really have an awesome impression of the Michigan muslim community [Ann Arbor, particularly], and I know some awesome ppl from there, but I was only there for one summer and I had an *amazing* time, so I could be bias :)

Baltimore, Maryland has some amazing Muslims too masha'Allah.

I've also been impressed with the Ottawa Muslim community, though that's not in the U.S.

Atlanta also seems to be a nice place for Muslims, from what I've heard.

Albany's awesome because we have Sh. Mokhtar here :-*  and me  ;)

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, sis Barr

I can only speak from the experience of a few places.

Albany is aiight.

But southern MD/northern VA/DC, that's where it's at.  :) Masha'Allah, I'm still trying to convince my family and some Albanyians to move down here. Half of us are down here already, anyhow.   ;)
Ironically, although it's where the President lives (or whatever. He's conveniently never around when there are demonstrations/protests), it's also where there are some of the most active, sincere Muslims, mashaa'Allah. Please make du'aa that they/the Islaamic schools/masaajid continue to get stronger (can I get an aameen?).  :)

Chicago, too.

Dearborne, MI, too.

Parts of NYC, too.

The Bay area in California, too (San Francisco, Santa Clara, etc).

Parts of TX, too (from what I hear; I know some from there who can't say enough about it. I would think it'd be too hot, though).

Sorry, don't know much about the mid-west. Inshaa'Allah someone can help you out on that (Kentucky, etc).

:)

I'd have to agree with zomorrud, Canada is the best place to live in the US! haha  :-/  Just kidding with y'all!!  ;D

I'm from NYC (New York City) and I haven't traveled much to different Muslims areas around the country. Though I've been to a lot of different Muslim areas in New York. New York's a great place to live, if you like city life and subways, and crime, etc. What's great to me is the variety of people you see here, especially Muslims. And since you may not see Muslims all the time, it's always great to see a Muslim in the subway and say Salaams to him.

But I would have to agree with jannah, you have to look at the resources available to you wherever you plan on moving. What I mean by resources, Islamic resources of knowledge, meaning knowledgable people whether they live in that area or travel to that area often. In the Chicago area you have Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar, in Albany you have Shaykh Ibrahim Memon and Shaykh Mokhtar Maghroui, in Connecticut you have Imam Zaid Shakir, in California you have Shaykh Hamza Yousuf and a whole band of scholars of the Zaytuna Institute including visiting scholars from abroad, in Virginia you have students of Shaykh Nuh who visits them yearly In Sha Allah, and in New York you have Imam Siraj Wahaj and you also have the Ni'ma program in Westchester where they set up programs with Shaykh Muhammad al-Ya'qoubi, Shaykh Samer al-Ra'ey, Shaykh Jamal Dhahabi, and also Shaykh Jihad Hashim Brown who's from the New Jersey area.

I would also look outside of US, zomorrud is actually right, there are alot of great places to live in Canada for Muslims. The Muslims there are well settled and there are a number of scholars there. I've heard of one place, I think it's in Toronto where you have a block with apartment complexes and alsmost everybody that lives in there are Muslims. And there's a Masjid downstairs so for Salaat everybody just heads downstairs; and I've heard that regular Jama'at for salaat can be around 300 or more.

Fi Amanillah.

Oh yeah, Santa Clara, California is great! No snowstorms or hurricanes or even tornadoes! Ok so there's earthquakes, but I've only felt one or two and they were teeny tiny itty bitty ones!
And Hamza Yusuf and the Zaytuna institute is not far from here. Not only that, but we have a fantastic muslim community. And we have a  branch of the Islamic American University (http://www.iau-sc.org)!  ;-)

slm,

As a fairly new resident ( a lil over a year) to Washington D.C area--I have to say--its awesome Masha'Allah!!  Honestly, there are soo many Muslims here, yet it has such a small close knit feel--something thats very hard to achieve with a city this big.  Now, I'm speaking primarily about my mosque--in northern virginia---ADAMS Center, which in my humble opinion and the opinion of thousands of other muslims in this area--is the best masjid in virginia/D.C area :)

Seriously, its so active and so inviting and our imam is Masha'Allah so awesome.  He's like a father to the community, Alhamdulillah.

AND...You know, I have never gone to the mall here without passing by atleast 5 or 6 other sets of Muslims..and most actually say Salam to you! :) Alhamdulillah.

the only downs would be cost of living  :P
But I think its worth it Insha'Allah.  And sis, if you ever come by, and need a tour or a place to stay--gimme a call! :)

Take Care,
Good luck..
Salam,
Nazia

Nazia,is that the one with the awesome website with cute pictures of daisy girl scouts(the rank not ethnicity) I've been searching for muslim communities with girls scouts to get ideas for ours. My eyes were spinning from all the activities listed there and the welcomy feeling i got just by reading the website. I remember thinking this is one special place! and wondered if it was run by converts? Well who ever it is surely knows what needs to be done for the community :)

This was a pvt mail to me by a brother who talks about dawah opportunities vis a vis  places to live
may Allah swt increase his Imaan and knowledge ameen
[wlm]

Where ever I have been, thats all that has mattered is that Islam is there. In terms
of place and time every place is an opportunity and every place is a test indeed.
The oppourtunity is for doing Dawah and the test is of your Imaan.
Is there any place where we can run away from these two things? Yes Makkah and
Medina is blessed, but still you are in the pocket of Islam be it Medina or
Timbuktu.
The whole world is a musllah !
Whereever I have been destined to visit by Allah swt, I am always within His sight
and I thank Him for keeping me.....
keeping me....
keeping me....
....in the pocket of Islam and where His protection verily resides.
Alhamdulillah !!!!

asalamu alaikum

atlanta is a great place for us to live, despite the fact that things are changing in the united states for us.

i suppose that it is the fact that there are over 40 masjids here, and the sheer volume of our population.

i recall when i was christian, meeting a number of arab christians as well as muslims.    so i guess that i must not be the only one to think that atlanta is a great place to be, as people have been moving here like crazy.

granted, some things have changed in the last year and a half, but that is all over the world.

but the islamic schools here are excellent,    most of the masjids have educational programs for both adults and children, as well as thelarger ones having fulltime schools for the children .

there are plenty of jobs, although right now many people must take one outside of their field, but the bills can still get paid that way.    i have no problem with finding a second job, nor do any of the others that choose to take one.

the population of women to men is 3 to 1, so it is not as likely for a woman to enter a community where a psedo islam is practiced and women are not given the chances that true islam offers to women.

i had always heard that the crime rate in atlanta was high ( this is when i lived in jacksonville florida) but i moved here, and the crime rate is no higher than it was there.    i am not talking about per capita, i am talking actual numbers.    jacksonville has 500,000 people.    atlanta has 4.25 million.

as far as culture goes, atlanta was the center of the civil rights movement in the u.s.    after the american civil war, the freed slaves came from the rural areas and built atlanta from a bustling industrial town that was a major point on the railways into the city it is now.    it is in a backwoods type of state, but it is like an oasis in a desert for that reason because it is nothing like the rest of the state.

the hispanic population is booming here as well.    while the majority of them are nonmuslim, they are also by the same token not as ignorant of islam as american muslims tend to be.    i have also found that they tend to want to know more about us than americans do.    they are, after all in a strange country and just trying to make better lives for their families.    it is only natural to want to know more about the ones that are more accepting of them.    if you have never heard "alhamdulillah!" said with a mexican accent, then you are missing out.    it is a beautiful sound.    they tend to be christian in practice and not just in name, very much like arab christians tend to be, so anyone that practices a faith worshipping the true god is more likely to touch their hearts than someone who simply says that they are a particular faith because that is what they label themselves.

wow, i guess i really rambled on there.    sorry.

anywayz, the weather is great here in the spring summer and fall, and the winters are not too bad either, i just dun like cold weather at all, but it is not that cold here in comparison to other cities.

my second choice of cities to live in would be vancouver b.c. or maybe somewhere in mexico.

Assalamu 'alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

Yusuf Estes was here in our community for 2 days and gave some good lectures on "Muhammad in Bible" and "Jesus in Qur'an". Other than that he also gave a brief presentation on Islam and Muslims in America which included some statistics,  one of which I thought was relevant to this thread and that is there are estimated 7 million Muslims in America, out of which 240,000 reside in Washington D.C.  Now that's a huge number  :). U can see the presentation on his website: www.islamtomorrow.com
Also, I heard that there are estimated 100,000 Muslims in a county in California, and that's probably Santa Clara, if my memory serves me right. Wallahu A'lam.
Wassalam.
