A question about Halal meat...

I have a question about eating Halal meat:  What if you were in a place where there was NO Halaal butchery, then it becomes ok to buy non-pork meat and say Bismillah, and eat it right?

Well, what about this situation:  does this still hold if you find yourself in a city where there are tons of Halaal butcheries, but you live in a place where it is "inconvenient" (i.e a short drive) to get to a Halaal place, so you eat the other non-pork goodies.

In most areas of South Africa, there are *so* many Halaal butcheries that you cannot even make up your mind where to buy from.  Why is it then that Muslims come here from other parts of the world and eat what for us would be considered "haraam"?

Anyone care to reply?

I think it would probably be safer to avoid the meat altogether and go without.

Same answer as above I would say.

Ermmm.. not something that I would do... I'd rather go vegetarian... with fish on the side ;)

I'm not aware of any fatwa that allows eating a non-halal meat by just saying bismillah over it... but of course, zabiha meat is different thing altogether, though.

Allahua'lam, ukhti...   I dunno... maybe, they thought its meat from the people of the book.. of which, some are comfortable consuming them?

I find that more Muslims in the West are less strict with what they eat than the East. I'm not saying that they eat haram foods... just more relaxed.

In Singapore, some Muslims would insist on a halal stamp on everything they eat and they won't eat anything in a restaurant that is not certified halal. Not even its french fries. And I find that this is smt uncommon for Muslims in the West. Eating zabiha meat would shock the daylights of a typical Muslim Singaporean.  ;)

So, I guess.. its different strokes for different folks....

Salaam Aleikum,
I have met many Muslims who believe it is ok to eat non-halal meat in countries that don't provide halal butchers.   Isn't it ok to eat meat butchered by people of the Books?
Anyhow, if you want to see the meat that is bought in the major grocery stores go to any animal rights websites like PETA.org.  There is plenty of disturbing footage on the animals raised for slaughter in the United States.  There are plenty of sites in other countries as well that document the conditions these animal live through.  It was enough to make me realize that it is not ok to eat meat that is non-halal.  These animals suffer in horrific conditions and are subjected to torture, starvations, beatings, force-feedings, caging, fear, fear, fear!!  I buy all my meat from an Islamic market.  It is more expensive but is worth the money because I can believe these animals are treated well.

Salam sis!
yeah, most Muslims in South Africa are the SAME! We usually freak when we hear these stories...everything HAS to be Halaal, or we go vegetarian.  I guess, everyone is different...

Yeah subhan'Allah many people believe that and there is difference of opinion. Wallahu A'lam

One of my teachers says this and I use his example  ;)  That we can never totally be sure if people of the book are slaughtering the animal. What if the person slaughtering the animal is an agnostic, athiest, hindu, buddhist..
