Al-Faisal told the court his words were taken from the Koran
A Muslim cleric has been found guilty of three charges of soliciting murder by an Old Bailey jury.
Sheik Abdullah al-Faisal, 39, of Albert Square, Stratford, east London, denied five charges of soliciting murder and four others relating to stirring up racial hatred.

The charges related to talks he gave which were recorded and put on sale.

The jury found al-Faisal incited young, impressionable Muslims to kill non-believers, Americans, Hindus and Jews.

Chemical weapons

Al-Faisal argued his words were taken from the Koran, the Muslim holy book, and had been misrepresented.

One tape, Jihad, contained the words: "So you go to India and if you see a Hindu walking down the road you are allowed to kill him and take his money, is that clear?"

He also said it is permissible to use chemical weapons to kill unbelievers.

In a tape called Rules of Jihad - thought to have been made before the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States - Al-Faisal told his audience: "You have to learn how to shoot. You have to learn how to fly planes, drive tanks and you have to learn how to load your guns and to use missiles."

'Holy war'

He said: "You are only allowed to use nuclear weapons in that country which is 100% unbelievers."

On a tape entitled Declaration of War, which had a picture of Osama Bin Laden on the cover and is thought to have been made in 2000, Al-Faisal translates one of his speeches calling for a holy war against Americans and Jews to "drive them out of the Holy Land".

The tape called Them Versus Us says: "There are two religions in the world today - the right one and the wrong one. Islam versus the rest of the world."

It was also disclosed that controversial cleric Abu Hamza was due to be called as a witness in the case.

Embarrassing antics

Unknown to the jury, Abu Hamza appeared before the judge during a pre-trial hearing to outline his evidence.

However, the defence decided to drop him as a witness during the month-long case as Abu Hamza's antics caused more and more embarrassing headlines.

In a separate development after the trial ended, it emerged police are to investigate an attempt to bribe the judge, Common Serjeant of London Peter Beaumont.

He was sent a letter from Scotland offering him £50,000, although Mr Beaumont stressed there was nothing to suggest it was connected to al-Faisal.

Al-Faisal was also found not guilty on two counts of soliciting murder. He was also convicted on two charges of using threatening behaviour and one of distributing threatening material.

He was acquitted on one charge of possessing threatening material.

Al-Faisal will be sentenced on 7 March.

It's people like this that turn me off of religion. All religion. How can anyone who claims to be faithful to God justify killing another simply because they believe in another religion?

Before EVERYONE jumps all over me, it's the same reason I turned my back on the Catholic Church. I grew up in an Irish Catholic household, and the violent acts the Protestants and Catholics continue to commit against each other makes me sick. Violent acts in the name of religion has turned me into a cynical bastard.

Unfortunately, people like this (leaders in their communities) give the good, faithful people of their respective religions a bad rep. Too bad.

Moe- brave post. Nice job, sincerely.

Its not the *religion* that’s the problem.

People have to be big enough and wise enough to be able to differentiate between the religion and those following/not following the religion.

If they don’t know the difference, they should ask someone who is knowledgeable.

not that i'm saying he should have blown it up of course.... just that not a very smart terrorist.

BrKhalid,

I guess you missed this:

Obviously I do differentiate. I'm just being honest...sometime one gets tired of continually asking, getting a satisfactory response, then seeing too many clergy leaders of the faith abusing their positions. It leaves a very sour taste in my mouth, and it makes me want to not be associated with the religion.

You guys invite people on to this site to learn, and be expressive. How does a response like yours help any? I'm sure you'll be big and wise enough to respond, all-knowledgeable one.

And I appreciate your honesty Dude ;-)

However, it seems I have been taken out of context. Just to clarify, my comment was a general one [based on your quote] and not aimed at yourself.

[Although given recent posts I can understand why you might have thought otherwise ;-)]

Just one more point of clarification. Only Allah is the All-knowledgeable.

I think it's very important for us to keep Islam and what the religion says separate from what Muslims do.  Not all Muslims are following the path unfortunately. Some genuinely think what they're doing is right in the name of Islam when it isn't.

As for spreading hate, unfortunately it seems no 'religious tradition' has cornered the market on that, but we cannot place the blame on religion. If you examine the world's major religion they are mostly about the same thing, looking beyond the self to a greater God.
