Gender of a Computer?
Barr

A French teacher was explaining to her class that in French, Unlike
English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine...

"House" is feminine-"la maison."
"Pencil" is masculine-"le crayon."

A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups -
male and female - and asked them to decide for themselves whether
"computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for their recommendation.
The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be Of the
feminine gender ("la computer"), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible
later review; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your salary on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine ("le computer") because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

The women won.

Wa'alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah,
"computer" in french is "l'ordinateur" which is masculine -

                 I don't care about what French says. Urdu is my native language, and even in Urdu, we treat the word computer as being male, like "Computer kharaab hota hai" and not like "Computer kharaab hotee hai." So, I care least about what French says about the computer, whether it being male or female. What I was saying is that when the teacher asked both males and females to decide for themselves what gender the computer is in French, and asked them to write 4 recommendations in support of whatever they think about its gender, and both of them did succeed in writing 4 recommendations, then how come the WOMEN WON?
               Am I really suffering from intellectual malabsorption syndrome?:)

Okay so what's the problem?  The women win anyway, because abhi bhi computer kharaab HOTA hi hai.  It's still masculine, whether french or urdu.  Perhaps the reason they won is because they are smarter (always and as usual) and they knew it was masculine in the first place??

And the women's # 4 wins by default anyway.

Now, i can't believe we just had such a long debate on this.  The weather really ought to get better so that i can get out more.  :)

Wa'alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah,

               I won't give up on this one so easily  8).
the women's answers were (a) more true (b) better (c) correct
The men's answers were (a)most true (b)best (c)correct as well.
So, accordingly men should win.
Perhaps the reason they won is because they are smarter (always and as usual) and they knew it was masculine in the first place??

And the women's # 4 wins by default anyway.
Men's all 4 recommendations win by default  ;D. Ask any brother here.
To give u an example, note how the very 1st recommendation by men is being proved here in this thread  :D :D :D, the internal logic of how did the women win? :P
You see..... 4 good answers from the men 4 good answers from the women...... would seem to be even.......... haha.... until you figure in the point that the teacher herself was a woman too   ..... haha
So, if the teacher would have been male, men would have won naturally, right? That's no reason for declaring women won.

         Come on sisters........u need to double click on ur "Brain icon". :D :D :D

Wassalam.

p.s: No offence intended, its all fun here. Have some Rooh Afza [].

            Maybe they can't think for themselves sometimes, but not always.
