The secretary, a christian, in my dept. offered me tuesday pancakes as a goodwill gesture just as to others in the same dept.

I have accepted it, but not eaten.  ???

i really dont know the significance of this day

Anyone has any 'food' for thought on this type of dish?

:)

Pancake Tuesday signifies the start of Lent, the Christian fasting time. It is the period of time where Christians fast in preperation for Easter. They are supposed to give up sweet things or things they indulge in.
In former times they gave up using stuff like sugar and eggs during lent and this is how Pancake Tuesday came around. The night before Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent) you had to use up all the sugar and eggs and stuff because they were forbidden from the next day on. So the solution -  :-[ - pancakes!

I don't know if you want to eat it or not. That is the same as if someone were to give you Christmas cake or an Easter egg. I think we have had this discussion before. Do you eat it with the intention that it was a gift to be enjoyed. Or do you throw it away because of the meaning of it??

I think it's up to you. "Actions are judged by intentions..."

Wa'alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah,
I have accepted it, but not eaten.
I am not sure if there is some specific Islamic ruling on it or not but logically speaking, is there any harm in eating whatever u have been offered for whatever reason, if it's halal? I don't think so. Its eatable. Does her being a Christian and offering u a pancake makes u less of a Muslim? No, not at all.  Similarly, does her being a Christian and offering u a pancake on their some particular occasion makes u less of a Muslim again? Throws u out of Islam? decreases ur eemaan? If not, then eat it. Why any hesitations? Wallahu A'lam.

Wassalam.
