i sometimes go to this discussion board on another website, and today one poster asked
I don't know anything about Islam, but do you think that 100, 200, 1000 years from now, Bin Laden's name will be almost as important as Muhammod's is? I mean, some think Bin Laden is a hero, and some "worship" him as their savior. Is it possible, all this "attention" he is receiving and his battle against the Great Satan will basically install him into some new form of Islam?

Didn't Muhammod become famous for being a "prophet" and "warrior"? Could Bin Laden reach the same hype?
i responded with something to the effect that what he did was wrong, and he is in no way comparable to any type of prophet of any kind, etc......and they responded:
You do not think there are those who would possibly raise him to that level? I'm just curious. Thousands of years ago, no one would have thought Jesus or Muhammod would be all that significant. How do we know OBL won't be? It's just an interesting discussion topic I think. I do not mean to insinuate at all that OBL is like Jesus or Muhammod, I was just wanting to see what others thought.
what would you have said?

If it's a non-Muslim board, I think you should explain a little about the basic beliefs of Islam ie God based through Messengers and the concept of Shirk.  How it is the biggest sin in Islam and that worshipping or making someone else into a prophet takes one outside the fold of Islam. This is agreed upon by all scholars of Islam.

And then talk about BinLaden and that his ideas/theories are not accepted by mainstream Muslims or scholars. That he is considered 'fringe'  and the idea of him reaching mainstream one day is quite doubtful as it goes totally against the teachings of Islam and the Quran. And since Muslims are quite strong about keeping the authetnic teachings of Islam and the Quran it's highly unlikely.

Also, try to avoid wasting your time with instigators.  Without a doubt, this person knows very little about Islam.  We have so many people out there who are pushing political agendas and are just caught up in media hype.  Spending a little time educating these people about our noble tradition is a good form of dawah, and perhaps more rewarding in the akhira.

Sometimes questions like these are good places to begin a discussion about the differences between Islam and Christianity or the life and message of our beloved Prophet.  What good is it to explain to someone Islam's perspective of OBL when they don't even know what Islam is about???
