Hi Deke, how are you? Welcome to the board.
The topic of Usama bin Laden is banned on this board for its very controversial nature. No one knows much about him, except from Media sources that are always full of twisted lies and distortions.
It's hard to make a judgement about someone you don't know, isn't it?
Take care,
Maliha.

Can we rephrase the question one more time? In my thoughts, there is nothing that can 'hurt' our religion of Islam.

If you asked "Have the terrorists hurt the American peoples outlook or attitude about Muslims and Islam" might be a better question. Is this what you mean?

I think in alot of ways the terrorists have hurt the image of Islam in this country. , because people equate Islam with terrorism. Unfortunately they can't get beyond that association because it is always there on TV (shows on FOX etc), in the media (racist columnists), in speeches (conservative right attacks on islam). .  But I also don't think this is something new. I think this image of Islam as the enemy other, a backwards religion, weird orientalism etc etc has always been around since the Crusades. It just ebbs and flows with the times.

I think overall people are more "aware" of Islam, whether in a more positive or negative way I can't really say.

deke, anyone can take verses of the Quran and use it for what they want. for example there are numerious verses in the Quran talking about doing good works and standing up against injustice. i'm sure any criminal can take this and say here's the proof we should go and rob banks and give the money to the poor cause they are charging a crazy $3.50 to take out our own money at ATMS!!

there are alot of people who can take things out of context and use them. same as many other religions. ie christians used the bible as defence for slavery and the inquisition and many other atrocities throughout history.

obl's motivations are not something we can really discuss because we know nothing about it except various reports here and there which are not authenticated.  we may never know and i don't think it behooves anyone to speculate on it.
