The prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told his wife Ayesha: "If you love the poor and bring them near you...God will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection." Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1376 The Prophet also said: "The people before you were destroyed because they inflicted legal punishments on the poor and forgave the rich." Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Hadith 77
