| [slm] How are you all? Alhamdulillah, in my corner it is now the middle of the first term of the school year! By the grace of Allah, I find myself teaching a third grade class at a Muslim school. Been really busy and really, really ........ rushed off my feet. Khair, it's good to be working, finally! Anyway, the point of my post..... a few of the other teachers and I are organising a ... well.... nasheed group a.k.a. choir and we were trying to come up with a name for it. We wanted to move away from the word choir as it has church connotations. We've heard of the word Qasida, but what exactly does this word mean? Is there an arabic word for choir, or chorus? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Jazakallah Qullul Khair! [wlm] |

| Assalamu alaikum Qasida means poem. A word for singers (especially those who sing Islamic nasheeds) is Munshideen (or Munshidoon depending on where the word is in a sentence :) or munshidat if they're all women). I don't know of a word for a choir but groups of singers are sometimes called "Firqah" and then a name, which literally means team but often refers to musicians and such... |

| [slm] Jazakallah, sis M.F. for the suggestions. We still haven't come up with a name. We finished our auditions last week and mashallah, ended up with a good group of students. Our first practice session sounded really promising. We're starting with some really simple english nasheeds and then inshallah we'll see how it goes. I think either Munshideen/Munshidoon, sounds promising but won't it get a little confusing? We'll keep brainstorming, maybe ask the kids to come up with something as well. hope things are well with all. [wlm] |
