Could You Spot Your Terrorist Work Colleague?

www.mpacuk.org

An employer is going through a pile of job applications. He sifts out two applications with weird sounding (Muslim) names. He’s thinking to himself;

“I am not a racist, but I just don’t want to employ some fanatic or terrorist”.

An old cliché frequently used by self-denying racists.

However, he has a problem. The job applications don’t easily tell him whether someone is an extremist (candidates don’t usually mention this, as pretending to be a member of the University Debating Society is far more important). Anyway, he is wishing he had asked for photos with the applications, then it would have been a lot easier – any beards or scarves go straight in the bin.

It has been a long day so he decides to be better safe then sorry and rejects both the Muslim sounding applicants.

An article in last week’s Times highlights what most people know all too well; those from ethnic minorities are far less likely to be successful in their applications for medical schools and (if they make it) for job promotions. What’s new is that it seems Muslims in particular are being isolated for “special treatment” i.e. rejection.

Schools of medicine cap intake of Muslims
By Glen Owen, Education Correspondent
MEDICAL schools have started restricting the admission of Muslim students after complaints that they are forcing doctors to abandon the teaching of certain subjects on religious grounds…..

An academic who wished to remain anonymous said “‘A vocal minority’ of Muslim students were making it hard to teach the traditional syllabus. “Many of the students oppose abortion, while others have said that they would refuse to treat venereal diseases because they are a punishment for immorality.”…

Michael Powell, executive secretary of the Council, denied that quotas had been introduced, but admitted tutors were concerned about the pattern of applications

What’s worrying is that the recent wave of Islamaphobia really does make it easier for bigots to come out the closet and carry out manipulation of applications as suggested in the article.

The article magnifies the rare cases of Muslims making foolish statements, such ‘as venereal diseases should not be treated’, but it fails to mention either the positive contribution Muslim doctors make to the medical profession or how Muslim doctors add to the much needed debate about ethical issues facing the medial profession.

Take action. If not for yourself then at least for others:

If you are thinking it could not happen to you and that you don’t need to do anything then Wake up, as it already has happened!
How can you be sure that you have never been turned down for that job or promotion, solely because of your race or religion?

Write to The Times at letters@times.co.uk about the article, which suggests that it is the norm for a Muslim to be impeded by his faith. Tell them about the many hard working Muslims who are successful doctors and how their beliefs help them excel in their duties. Mention the fact that it is not only Muslims (e.g. Catholics oppose abortion and contraception etc, see http://www.catholic.com/library/Abortion.asp.) who oppose taking the life of an unborn child and have other moral ethics that they would never compromise. Tell them why you think it’s unfair that Muslims see! med to be singled out for a double whammy of discrimination against their race and religion.

Contact the General Medical Council (details below). Express your concerns about the bigotry of some in the medical profession and how such a situation has been allowed to arise in the first place. Ask them why there is disproportionate under-representation of Muslims in the top jobs. Ask them how they intend to rectify the situation to ensure a true meritorious and transparent system. Demand change!
