Summary of Event: Weekend Intensive: Attributes of God In Islam
The Nawawi Foundation has the superlative honor of presenting this collaboration of Shaykh Hamzah Yusuf and Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah in a two-day intensive on this most central and fundamental of all topics of Islamic discourse, focusing on the rudiments of Classical Islamic theology relevant to its conception of God. The intensive will examine the meanings and implications of the existential attribute of divine being (existence)—including a few observations on Islamic arguments for God’s existence—the five attributes of negation (preexistence, eternity, dissimilarity, self-sufficiency, and oneness), and the seven attributes of affirmation (life, knowledge, will, power, speech, hearing, and seeing). It will clarify the difference between the divine essence, attributes of essence, and attributes of action, while also presenting the Islamic conception of attributes of divine beauty, majesty, and perfection. The intensive will study the relation between divine knowledge, will, and! power and the affirmation of human free will and moral agency. It will consider the nature of eternal divine speech and how it relates in the Classical debate to the nature over the Qur’an and the revealed books and whether they also have an uncreated quality. Finally, the intensive will study the relation between the One and the many and how God and his attributes relate to the things and infinite changes of the temporal world of time and place. The weekend will consist of intervals of one and half hour lectures, with breaks for salah, lunch and dinner. Both lunch and dinner will be available on site for purchase, as well as at nearby restaurants. On Saturday night, after analyzing the attributes of God with our minds, we will inshallah try and spend some time incorporating His attributes in our hearts by singing qasidas/naats in praise of God. It is hoped that those who partake in this intensive will not only enjoy excellent company and an invaluable learning experience but come away from the weekend with a sound understanding of what Muslims believe about their God as well as how that belief relates to some of the primary scientific, philosophical, and epistemological concerns of our times.
