3rd Annual MSA Atlanta Council

Study Abroad Intensive Arabic Program
The instability in the Middle East has caused a
reduction of flights forcing us to cancel our normal
program in Damascus, Syria. Our contingency plan
is to offer an intensive Arabic Language program in
Malaysia. This Program will be a 9 week program
that will commence on June 2, 2003 and end
August 1, 2003. The program has been designed to
reach the following objectives:

·  In LISTENING, at the end of the summer students should be able
to comprehend information presented to them in simple conversations
and short presentations by native Arabic speakers. Students are
expected to be able to comprehend simple statements and questions
that relate to their immediate environment and familiar subjects.

·  In SPEAKING, the students are expected at the end of the
summer to be able to ask and answer questions on familiar topics and
survival activities as well as make short presentations about themselves,
personal interests, family, residence, likes and dislikes, or area of study.
Students are expected to be able to narrate simple stories and relay
current events in major time frames and describe people and things and
express opinions about them.

·  In READING, students are expected, at the end of the summer to
be able to scan authentic texts on related subjects and extract from
them in general ideas or simple details. Comprehension is expected to
be achieved with speed and with minimal use of dictionaries. Outside
reading materials will be mainly from newspapers or magazines and will
consist of texts of varying length containing factual and biographical
information, charts, schedules, narrations, descriptions of people, places
and things, and very short stories, etc.

·  In WRITING, students are expected at the end of the summer to
be able to write, with accurate spelling and structure, compositions of
varying length dealing with the self or the
immediate environment and general interests.

In addition, they are expected to be able to
write formal and informal letters, requests and
replies related to social functions, and fill out
application forms, resumes and the like.

· Each student will be required to, wherein only communication in
the language of Arabic will be acceptable. (the details associated with
the Communication Pledge will be discussed later)

             AsalamAlayKum,

An important by-product of participating in events like this one is

building a category of 'Islamic Tourism'.

Why travel to the Bahamas or Disneyland or Florida when you can

Visit the Maldive Islands, The Malay Archipeligo or Morrocan Mountains?

This sounds pretty cool for a summer work/study/Islam Vacation.
