Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

I always thought the name was excellent especially for getting hits when people are trying to find stuff via search engines.

Why do you want to change it?

Pretending i am a person that has never come to this message board.

I went to the sisters page. I then clicked humor and then I clicked this message board link.

All i got was the picture of this city. When I clicked on a particular site.. i just got the site in close up.

How does a wanderer, surfer... actually get to this message board site?

Resources for and about Muslim Women

When one comes to the 'title' page of the website Resources for and about Muslim Women*, the feeling one is overtaken with is one of peace and tranquility. The mix of soothing pastel colors and language including words "beneficial" and "merciful" add to this overall feeling of well-being, which keeps one reading to see exactly what the focus of the site is. Is the site propaganda and 'terrorism in a veil' or is it truly in place to "...pique your interest and help you to understand the true stance Islam takes on gender issues and the role of women" as it claims? Additionally, is the site a valid resource or someone's pipe dream? How could this website serve as a help to one who is viewing it? These are some (but not all) of the questions I researched while 'clicking my way through' this website.

I first checked to see who the author of the site was, and found (at the bottom of the title page) that it was copyrighted by 'The Rest' and jannah.org, (jannahorg@yahoo.com) and indicated another website titled Islam, The Eternal Path to Peace. Jannah, "literally means "garden". In the Quran, Jannah is also used to mean "THE Garden" or ?heaven/paradise." Although I used the given e-mail to contact the author, I have not yet heard back from him/her.

The site itself is divided into several categories and they are well defined on the cover page. They are: Women in Islam, Status & Articles, Quran and Women, Muslim Women, Marriage & Family Life, The Islamic Veil or Hijab, Muslim Women in History & Contemporary Times and Humor, Poetry and More?. The links are valid and load quickly, which is a definite plus, and the titles of the subcategories are divided further - all very well organized.

Women in Islam is covered extensively, with subdivisions titled Status of Women, Islam and Feminism, Women in Society, Leadership, Economics & Law, Muslim Women Around the World, and Books and Critiques. The articles under each heading are informative, well written and give the reader an appreciation and knowledge of Islam and Muslim women.

The subject is dissected thoroughly enough for a teacher to find extensive material for an interesting and informative classroom presentation that would be helpful for the totally uninformed (with regard to the subject) as well as give insight to one who is somewhat knowledgeable.

One thing to note, however, is that this is a website devoted to promoting Islam in the most favorable light regarding women. The title page states that it hopes to ??help you to understand the true stance Islam takes on gender issues and the role of women.? The subject of feminism and Islam is even tackled in one of the links. While the author is very persuasive, the general emphasis for women in Islam seems to be in the home, although it is stated the woman can work if economic matters necessitate her doing so.

Under the topic Women in Islam, the first link is to a book dealing with gender equity in Islam. The topic is covered extensively in a manner that is informative and interesting, although I did note various grammar and punctuation errors (these could be corrected fairly easily by the site administrator).

When one 'clicks' to the subject The Islamic Veil or Hijab, there is a list of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) that explain the reasons for and decisions involved in hijab, along with advice to the new 'sis' and a few personal accounts.

The topic Muslim Women, Marriage & Family Life is also set up with a FAQ list, although they're separated further into the categories Marriage in Islam, Getting Married and Family Life. There are a few FAQs that at first blush had me holding back laughter: How to make your husband happy is one such subject. Looking further, however, there is a subject titled How to make your wife happy along with Intimate relationship and mutual rights and obligations and Book on the Etiquette of Marriage - Ghazali . This gives the reader a heads-up that several viewpoints are explored and explained.

The topic Muslim Women in History and Contemporary Times, there is a ready-made PowerPoint Presentation on the subject of Famous Muslim Women. I couldn't access it as I do not have PowerPoint on my computer, but it would be a helpful tool in teaching a class about women who have made their mark in the history of Islam. There is also a list of eleven (11) biographical accounts of some famous historical Islamic women that is very comprehensive and informative along with four (4) well presented accounts of contemporary Muslim women. One thing to note regarding these accounts: capitalization, punctuation and grammar are in need of correction in many of the biographies noted.  Women and Quran was very intriguing, as I've not had any experience reading the Quran at all. The subcategories are Women in a Quranic Society - Dr. Lois Lamya Al-Faruqi, Women in theQuran and Sunnah - A. Doi , Quran and Woman, and 177 Ayahs about Women in the Quran. The first two sub-categories are interesting and well written, but the third had what I felt to be a disturbing passage. The article titled Quran and Women was penned by adam3@netcom.com, and said ??What Islam has established for woman is that which suits her nature, gives her full security and protects her against disgraceful circum- stances and uncertain channels of life.?

As I personally enjoy my uncertain channels of life and do not wish to be given 'full security' and protection that 'suits my nature'. This is the general problem I have with the belief system of Muslims and Women, but there is no need to get into my beliefs, as this is a critique on a website touting the benefits of being a Muslim woman.

Under the Humor, Poetry and More? category, there are four joke sub-links, a link to other resources on the subject of Muslim Women and, most interesting to me, the link to an interactive Message Board (sponsored by Jannah.org), which is presented as a map of sorts. It was quite beautiful, with grass and beautiful buildings and such depicted. These buildings were actually links to different parts of the message board, with areas I did understand (Library, Archives, Bookstore, and News) and those I was totally unfamiliar with (Kabob, Bebzi, and Albanyia). When checking further, it appears this is ?Madinat Al-Muslimeen, the city of Muslims,? and one must ?register with the city council? before entering. When checking the Archives, I found a bit more information regarding the titles of each area of the Message Board, but this was not the easiest task in the world and had I not been doing this review, I would have given up the search before finding the information.

The link to other resources was easier to figure out, and led directly to the ?MamaList of Islamic Links: Women?. This list boasted more than fifty links to various lists, articles, critiques, etc., and appeared all-encompassing; links I tried were quick to load, although in truth I didn't try them all.

The Website was informative, well organized, entertaining and (at times) infuriating (grammar, etc.), but would be a helpful tool for anyone doing research on this subject or needing to present information regarding Muslim women. It is very definitely meant to persuade as well as inform. Because of this, it is necessary to realize that when preparing any material for educational purposes, it might be wise to check other sources for opposing views to present a more balanced overview to a classroom. The links were in good working order and moving from one part of the site to another was accomplished quickly and without incident. In my opinion, this is a helpful and informative resource. The author is obviously passionate about her subject and presents it in an organized manner that is pleasing to the eye and explained in language a novice in the area (Muslim beliefs, etc) is able to understand without stooping to such an elementary level as to repulse those more knowledgeable.

This is a site that would be beneficial for a teacher, presenter, student or one who simply has a casual interest in women who are Muslims. Although the pro-Muslim stance is understandable given the author, I emphasize again the need to balance this with another more secular viewpoint to give a well rounded account. The website itself is a delight (no broken links or slow loading information) with peaceful colors and a tranquil feel to the whole experience. It was an interesting 'ride' and I will be back to learn more as time permits. I highly recommend this site for the information it contains and the presentation of the material.

(Well my personal take, for what it’s worth…. And clearly just a personal opinion from this end, you undoubtedly didn’t request it.... smile)

:-* Congratulation, What a review!!… & Actually coming from a non-muslim I think you left a very nice impression even with her hesitation…. That’s so enlightening.
The author is obviously passionate about her subject
….  “All Praise be to Allah”
It is very definitely meant to persuade as well as inform
… Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best who have strayed from His Path and who receive guidance (Quran 16:125)

This point humored me a little (Allah have Mercy):
The article titled Quran and Women was penned by adam3@netcom.com, and said??What Islam has established for woman is that which suits her nature, gives her full security and protects her against disgraceful circum- stances and uncertain channels of life.?
…….  I was thinking while reading this… as a practicing Muslim this statement would give a different light than for a non-Muslim and you know my personal love for the legislation of Allah (swt) … it sets my heart aglow…. Then they followed with this:
As I personally enjoy my uncertain channels of life and do not wish to be given 'full security' and protection that 'suits my nature'. This is the general problem I have with the belief system of Muslims and Women
……  ((smile, well this one stated itself bold and clear))

…….. All I can say with true sincerity…. Is that I pray Allah(swt)/God may reach past the hesitations this author holds inside and enlightens them to understanding of his presence ….  Allahu Alam.

In all honesty though Jannah, it must be very exciting that this author took this kind of time to research through your site. And even more, that they took the time to critique in such detail. Very Wonderful! However, on the note of grammar mistakes…  ;) You definitely want to be careful of “infuriating” people. (smile) All I can think is “Praise be to Allah (swt)” that it was the “grammar”.  Rather than the “content” of this mass amount of information you have compiled and displayed in such a beautiful format. Subhan Allah

Thank-you for sharing this with us…very enjoyable.
