My husband was asked by one of his co workers for a book on Islam. He doesn't know much at all about this religion. What do you recommend?
I was leaning towards "The Idiot's guide to Islam" by Yahya Emerick, although I haven't read it myself I heard good things about it.

Any other recommendations?

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran,

Sis,

The first book I read was Towards Understanding Islam by Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi.  Something really clicked when I read that book.  I continued reading for several months before I became a Muslim...but that book really attracted me.  I also think knowing what kind of person he is...scientific, logical, already believes in God, religion or lack thereof, etc.  Some people have a "hot button."  I was an agnostic but my idea about "God" was that I believed whatever God was, was too large to be described by man-made religions and words.  I was very dissatisfied with the word 'god' itself because of all the different implications it had.  I thought the Star Wars use of the word "Force" was more accurate..since 'god' had man-like implications from Southern Baptist influences.  :)  When I read that book..it said almost immediately that God is beyond human comprehension.  So, I said, "Yes!  Finally, something I can agree with."  It went on to say how everything in the Universe is Muslim because they naturally follow the laws God put in place..that all people are Muslim biologically, etc.  Great book.  Of course, that's just my experience. :-)

Yep I agree on this one. Really is a good book, lengthy but the referencing is good and the sections are really clear and easy to follow.
Its the one book that I found was carefully researched and prepared in a way that makes the reader think.

i think that a good first book should be a Qura'n translation in english in an edition "for learners" with lots of historical / religious notes and explanations; if something like that exists !

I would agree too.  It's a good book.  But I didn't find it particularly lengthy.  Actually, I think it's rather on the shorter end of the spectrum.  But then maybe that says more about me and the books I read than about the book itself.   ::)

"Towards Understanding Islam"

I third that.

I wish that book "Idiot's Guide ..." was named something else!   ::)

"What Islam is All About" by Yahiya Emerick (author of the Islam for dummies book) is very good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought "Towards Understanding Islam" was geared more towards Muslims trying to understand their religion better?
I read "Let us Be Muslims" by the same author, but that's what I heard but the former one.
Let me know.

Thanks,
Maliha.

I think a really good introduction that captures the essence without going into too many details which might bore a nonMuslim is the lecture video of "The Purpose of Life" by Jeffery Lang.

That will not cover the customs and practices of Muslims but give a good understanding of what Islam is about.

The first 2 books I was given when introduced to Islam last May  were "The Glorious Qur'an" and "Discover Islam - Your Birth Right".  I was given them by my daughter's Imam when I visited her in South Carolina.

"Discover Islam..." is short, concise and easy to understand.  I don't know about anyone else, but I would have been insulted if I had been given a copy of an "Idiots Guide..." to anything.  That's just me though.  Maybe I need to work on that  :-/!

As Salaam'alaykum

I agree with this choice.  It is the book that is given to all new reverts at my masjid when they attend class to learn about islam.  I refer to it today even, and it provides asome history and background so necessary in understanding Islam..also it is filled with the answers that a new revert has on how to implement Islam in your daily life.

Talking about books...the first four books of my Book Series, Islamic Rose will be published and available in early November!!!! YEA!  They are what is known as chapter books.reading level 4th-8th grade..but many of my adult friends who were "readers" for me said they truly enjoyed the books.  for those who read my Cassy Story...these books are alot more of this...with my main character modeled after Cassy!

When I have the particulars I will let all interested know.   The purpose of my writing books is to raise funds for Muslim Community Services..there is always a need to fill for our brothers and sisters!

'A Brief Illustrative Guide To Understanding Islam' (available online at http://www.islam-guide.com/ ), 'A Glimpse at the Beauty of Islam' are some good introductory dawah books (published by Dar-us-Salam)

Suggestions:
1. Read or at least browse through the books that you will give out, so that if you are asked a question regarding the material in the book you will be able to communicate better.
2. If you know what subject the questioner of Islam would like to learn about, perhaps you can provide literature geared towards that.

Islam: Religion of Life by Abdul Wadud Shalabi is very good.
Understanding Islam and the Muslims by TJ Winter and...I forget the other guys name is also excellent, brief, and has lots of high quality pictures.

But I do have to say...not every book is the best book for every person.  Depending on the style, language, etc. you know.  Some people are interested in more academic style works, some people are not so intellectual, etc.

If possible, it helps if you know a little about the person who's doing the asking.  That can color the books that I'd recommend.
