A question abt cars

I hope the brothers here can answer my question...i would have asked my own bro, but him and i can't communicate on the same wavelength at all...
I'm prolly going to sound ignorant when i ask this  ;D...but here i go..

Does a car use up more gas when driving on a freeway aka highway [at a speed of 65-70 mph]? Or does a car burn more fuel during traffic or surface streets [avg speed of 30 mph]? And does turning on the AC while driving use more fuel also?

W'Salam,
Sheen :-)

The best fuel efficiency is typically non-stop highway driving at about 2000-2500 RPM (if you don't have a guage, that's low rev, probably 60-65).

If you have cruise control, use it!

I find that I get about 25% to sometimes 50% more miles out of a full tank when I'm on long trips (freeway driving) as opposed to city driving.

Yes, AC does consume fuel.

I wouldn't recommend cruise control.  Have you ever used it going up and down hills or roads that have a lot of hills?  The car will ACCELERATE very quickly on hills, and seem like its breaking going down them, its kinda weird.

But yes, highway driving gives you  better mileage then city driving.  There are other things you can do to improve your mileage.  For example, when doing a tuneup use the splitfire spark plugs, they'll improve your mileage.  Also replace dirty air filters.  And in some vehicles, higher octane gases give significantly better performance, check your user manual.

Clarification: Cruise=good on flat, bad on hills.

Thanx for enlightening me with the mileage info brothers :)...now another  question that i just remembered. Does it really matter whether u overtake a car ahead of u from the right hand side or left hand side? [Provided there is enough distance between the cars]...i mean which side is better ???

If you have your license, it doesn't matter ;)

Wasalaam.

(p.s. overtake on the left.)

That only works in countries where the driver sits on the left side of the vehicle.  In countries such as UK and Pakistan where the steering wheel is on the right side, one should overtake on the right.  :)

Also, also when you turn on your A.C , stereo... etc.. the car consumes more fuel.. (Just learned this in physics  :-[)

Driving etiquette says you typically should always stay in the right lane (North America...driver on left hand side) unless passing. Often, you get people who either don't recognize the rules / etiquette, or they don't know better, and stay in the left lane, regardless of speed. The left lane is meant to pass...but sometimes you'll need to overtake a driver from the right side.

BTW...whay are you asking? Are you in the process of getting your licence?

After seeing the picture of the women's parking lot, maybe she thought she had better ask the experts to avoid disasters like that.   ;D

I don't know if you all have automatic transmission in the US but I have to change gears in my car. If you change gears sooner than you need to then you can save fuel too.
That means stay in the low RMPs and you'll save $$$

I also noticed a big change in fuel consumption when driving on the motorway.

(I have been purposely sitting on my hands to avoid typing replies to all the dissing of sister drivers... 'nuff said  :P )
