[wlm]

p.s if it's some sort of abbreviation of a swear word - i don't really want to know  :P

Doing something on the "D.L" means on the "down low", keeping it hush hush, lol!       ;D

Just in case the sister doesn't know what "keeping in hush hush" means either ... :)

It means the thing should not be spread to people.  Keep it to yourself.

Congratulations to the both of you, you understand what "on the D.L." means. ;)  I'm sure our resident, Sheikha ul Slang will be able to elaborate in more detail about this phrase as well as other phrases.  Perhpas we might even be treated to some free lessons. :D

One thing is for sure though...canadian and british slang is really corny and dumb.  :P

now don't get angry and and all patriotic! With my connections, i will introduce a new rule, and anyone who doesn't agree that american slang is hard in the pint, off the chain, or krunk will be kicked off the board!

I'm Canadian and I didn't get Panjul's slang...

So there is only one conclusion to be made:  It's American slang!!!  And I've never heard it before either...

Is it straight out of a 1940s Gregory Peck movie? ;)  (Jokes)

as salaamu alaykum,

okay just one tip.. please don't use slang if you don't know what it means :)  one dude called me 'big momma' once.. I was like *what*  :o  he thought it meant like cool mamacita or something.. or that's what he said anyway  >:(

also I think someone should give a lesson  on suburban slang.. y'all talk *strange*

weird things I've heard recently that I think must come from the boondocks:

"rinky dink"
"up to the wazoo"
"more than you can shake a stick at"
"get out of my life!"

Lol, my friend also talks about the boonDOCKS! that's American, through and through...when she called and I was on a trip in the bush, far away from the city, I told her I was in the boonDOOS, lol, she had a good laugh at me...I wonder if only South Africans call the boondocks the boondoos...mmm, funny anyhow

p.s most of the stuff on TV here is American, and after watching one Ricki Lake show too many, we got it down pretty good with the US slang...now the British stuff still has me stumped. What on Earth is a PEEP? (it means something to me, something medical-positive end expiratory pressure-but I dont somehow think thats what they mean, ja?)

the DL is disabled list.  I have no idea where any other use for DL was taken from, but then again I only watch ESPN and  Foz Sports West.

This reminds me of an incident that happened looonnggg ago when I was young and hasty (lemme repeat h-a-s-t-y).  I was at a conference where the guest speakers were from the states, canada and holland.  The medium of instruction was naturally English.  Many of the attendees were caucasians with the odd asians and one hijabi (moi). During the break, I was standing by myself when an Ameican guy approached me.  He looked at me interestedly like I was some kind of fossil in a display window.  He smiled at me and I smiled back.  He then said very slowly "hello" and I responded Hi.  He again spoke slowly with a heavy American slang/twang/drawl "How do you find the conference so far".  I replied "It's rather informative.  Although, it would be good if the q&a session be extended for each speaker so that audiences can have enough time to clarify points.".  He looked surprised and exclaimed "Oh you speak English !".  To which I responded sweetly "Why yes, do you ?".

Best part is, this happens to me many times.  Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Wassalam.

That is sooo funny Ummwafi :-/  Just recently I was in the elevator at work. This olllldddddddd fossil of a man, was standing there. He looked at me, and smiled sooo widely. I smiled back. Then he goes very slowly "YOU LIKE YOUR JOB???" Nods his head a couple of times "LIKE???"
I was perplexed...I said "Yes? Do you like yours?"
Then he went on to talk about his job, in a slow fashion.
Too bad I had to go 8 floors listening to the torturous way he was talking ::)
I still think he thinks I can't speak englizy...oh well.
Other situations where people go "WOW! You speak *SUCH* good english!!!!" and I am like "errr..thanks!"
*Sigh*.

Sis,
Maliha :-)

My wife gets that constantly, even though her English / Fijian accent has disappeared. She sounds fully Canadian.

I must admit, I was guilty of that too. But, I spoke to people because I'm interested in other cultures, and liked to learn a little. I also have a real soft spot for ethnic girls. Actually, I'm a sucker for them! My wife beats me over the head any time an ethnic girl comes to the house fundraising, because I buy without even asking.

What a dope, eh? Silly hoser... ;D

I don't now if it means the same somewhere else, but I have heard here in SoCal "Peeps" from some young guys at work, apparently it stands for a pipe ,as in a smoking pipe ,go figure what exactly is smoked in such "peeps" .Also a lighter is the "litz". Here's some more :
English                                               Spanglish
House : pad or crib                             canton, chante
Car : ride                                            ranfla
Girlfriend,wife :squeeze,babe             ruca,haina,domadora
Friends :niggaz,homeboys ,G's           homeys,clika,batos
to pop a cap :threaten to shoot or hit someone
there's many ,many more, but that is all that comes to mind right now...theres'actually a lot that I don't understand myself.

Tsk…Tsk..Tsk…poor form as we would say in Canada.  :)

Actually I must admit we generally find American humor to be somewhat annoying. Its always so obvious because they insist upon having a ‘punch-line’ to ensure the most painfully obvious joke is understood by all – but that takes all the fun and symbolism out of the humor. American humor is also very crude and direct where Canadian/British humor is far more subtle and symbolic.

The think I like about humor is that it is nearly impossible to translate because generally it is wrapped up in a social context that the reader will not understand. Lebanese jokes are a prime example of this….for the life of me I cannot understand why they think certain things are so funny!

What I am really annoyed about in American English is their spelling, grammar and even pronunciation.

Mom, Center and Tire should be spelled like they sound Mum, Centre and Tyre
Grammar …. is well pretty much non-existent
And its seriously annoying to hear an American trying pronounce words like creek, roof and especially aluminum (its like they think the first ’i’ is silent or something)

also i dont understand why americans pronounce words like 'turbine', 'route' etc the way they do. sure is funny to me.

and there was this southerner at work for a bit, the way he pronounced 'tempera-ture' totally bamboozled me!

I'm (sort-of) Canadian, yeah?

But I must say I agree with all the American spellings.  Why would someone waste all that energy trying to write/type an extra letter in words like "favorite"...Also, it is ALUMINUM...it isn't ALUMINIUM (heh)...and it's Center, not Centre.

(Enough sticking up for Americans...on to the next side...)

Okay, have you guys noticed that every single area in the States has a different accent?  And none of them sound normal.  For example, when I went to Chicago...they pronounce simple words like "Rock" as "Raack."  Heck! They don't even pronounce the name of their city correctly.  It's not "Chicaaaaaaago,"  it's "Chicago" (one short A sound will do).

And why do people down south say "Sundi" instead of "Sunday"??  And don't even get me started on the East Coast accent.  Straaaange people, you lot ;)

Nothing personal!
They don't even pronounce the name of their city correctly.
hmm ofcourse..how can they pronounce the name of their OWN city correctly, someone from a different area ofcourse can pronounce it correctly tho. that makes better sense doesn it ;)

I'm just wondering if any of you sisters usually talk in slang - especially if you wear the hijab? I just think it seems a little wierd to do so seriously. For me I usually joke around with friends by saying Waaaaaz-up or Forgit-about-iit but I think it's just so not me if I were to actually go out in public and talk like that.  :P
