I have a question about shiite vs. sunni.  Are most American muslims one or the other?  And would you go to either a shiite or sunni mosque or do they go to the same mosque?

I've had this question too. I know the topic is banned, but just for technical reasons, maybe someone could help explain. Our family is Sunni, and they don't have much good to say about the Shiite.

Hoping to get more of a technical explanation that an emotional one (like I get at home).

Maybe someone like Janna or Uncle hanif can answer, then close the thread.

Well Muslims believe that Qur'an is the word of God right? Well then what says in the Qur'an should matter and not what the Muslims are doing right?

Turn ye back in repentance to Him and fear Him:  establish regular prayers, and be not among those who join gods with Allah, - Those who split up their Religion, and become (mere) Sects, - each party rejoicing in that which is with itself (Qur'an 30:31-32)

When Jesus came with clear signs, he said:  "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me  "For Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord: so worship ye Him: this is a straight way."  But sects from among themselves fell into disagreement: then woe to the wrong doers from the Penalty of a Grievous Day! (Qur'an XLIII:63-65)

Has thou not turned the vision to those who have changed the favour of Allah into blasphemy and caused their people to descend to the House of Perdition? (Qur'an 9:28)

So by reading Qur'an I believe Allah (swt) has forbidden me/us to divide into sects. I might be considered 'sunni' cause of family but I will and do not say that.  I believe in Allah (swt) and His messesnger  [saw] and I believe in the Qur'an which Allah (swt) has sent down to mankind. In other words  I am simply a Muslim.

I think Most American Muslims, especially hopefully feel the same as I do. If you really want a rough static, I believe its 80% sunni and 20%shia. They were divided because of political matters (I believe after the prophet [saw] death). I think there is one site that explains everything, if I can find it I will personally send it to both of you. Now you know what Islam says about the division, but if you want to know the politics (which I think doesnt have anything to do with Islam) then you can should try asking some Muslim scholars in your hometown. This tends to become controversial thats why I believe these topic are band here.....just givin you a warning cause Im sure Jannah is gonna close it soon.

Anyhow Allah (swt) knows best

take care
your sister

ps In my hometown, both shias and sunnies come to the same mosque. We face one direction, and thats all that matters.
pss Brother Dude maybe you can show these verses to your family, insh'Allah ;)

I have a LOT of information on this topic and have been in so many discussions and debates on this, and they usually end up, in really, really big fights, with people insulting each other.  If you are serious about this question, then ask me offline, because per the consitution we are not allowed to discuss this topic, you can however review older threads on the older board when this topic was brought up and what the response was on the message board.
