What makes you tick?
Dude

With all the arguing and bickering lately, I thought it’d be cool to learn a little about our fellow posters, and what makes them tick. Obviously, one’s religion a major, if not the most important part of their lives, but what happens outside the religion? I’ll start.

I am born and raised on the West Coast of British Columbia. My parents divorced young, so my Mum mostly raised my older sister and I in Coquitlam, BC (Greater Vancouver). I spent my summers with my Dad in Powell River, BC- a West Coast fishing / beach / mill town on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve been involved in sports my whole life, mainly I think because my Mum wanted to keep me out of trouble. I still play soccer at a fairly competitive level, and help out with youth coaching clinics and player evaluation as well. I’m also an adrenaline junkie ;D. I grew up skiing (that stopped early...way too expensive!), water skiing at the lake, racing bikes, triathlons, and currently spend the summers DH Mountain Bike Racing ( http://www.nsmb.com/photo_gallery/  - this photo gallery shows some great shots, and also shows off some of the breathtaking beauty of BC. Stay away from the community- unedited). Along wit this active lifestyle, I think I’ve inadvertently taken some years off my like…seems I’m under the knife every 18 months for something…broken leg, torn rotator cuff, severed bicep…oie :P! The only adrenaline sport I’m dying to try that I haven’t is surfing…I think I was borne to surf, just borne in the wrong area for it! DH is a crossover sport to surfing…thus the nickname “Dude” ::).

I’m the proud father of two kids: son 3-1/2 years old, daughter 10 months. The rest of my free time is spent with them (mainly our son, but my little girl will be in swimming lessons soon J ). Our son swims twice per week, is in skating twice per week, and goes to soccer school on Saturdays. It seems he’s inherited his Dad’s energy level, because we still can’t tire him out, even with all that! He loves it all, and can’t get enough…we’re thankful for that! My wife and kids are the most precious things in my life.  :)

We’re family people, and spend a lot of time at my in-laws. Our son is just now starting to go to the Mosque with his Nana. We try to get in a vacation every year. We’ve been lucky enough to vacation in Mexico a few times, and the Bahamas (Guana Quay…very secluded and nice-  http://www.diveguana.com/ . We ate conch, gruper fish, or fresh lobster from Troy @ Dive Guana every day…didn’t even miss the steaks and halal meats from home!) Mainly, we spend a lot of time in the summer at Whistler (http://www.whistlerresort.com/ ). It is just as busy in the summer as in the winter, and the DH Mountain biking available to Dad is just unbelievable! Otherwise, we all go to the gym together in the evening if we have nothing to do (they have a little play area for the children there…great for mum and dad).

Basically, we work hard, but we try to play hard too.

Otherwise, I’m a diehard hockey fan. I’m a huge supporter of our national programs (Canada: 2002 Olympic Champs- Men & Women!), and our local team, the Vancouver Canucks.

So that’s about what makes Dude tick. I try to love life as much as I can.  ;)

Anyone else want a kick? ???

Economics and Calculus make me "tick".

I love travelling, reading, writing, running, good food, and spending time with children and older people.  (I get enough of my generation as it is.)

And that's how the Original ticks.  lol.  (I'm loving that word, gotta start using it more often.)

Wasalaam.

Economics and Calculus makes you tick?

Yikes. :o They made me have to repeat those two courses after flunking them in my first year of College!

I enjoy reading to relax too, and running is great for the soul.

that's really cool.  i  haven't met too many muslims interested in math.

btw Dude, don't expect an outpouring of  "...i am muslim....let me tell you all about my life...."  as most  muslims are not that keen about helping the the FBI  maintain info about them :)

Since we are talking about economics, calculus, perhaps some might find this story of Ali (ra) interesting:

Ali (ra) and Maths Problems
====================

   Here are some Mathematical problems that Hazrat Ali solved while
he  was  Khalifa. He was known for his mathematical genius. Enjoy reading them:

   One Day a person came to Ali (RATA), thinking that since Ali thinks he
is too  smart, I'll ask him such a tough question that he won't be able to
answer it and I'll have the chance to embarrass him in front of all the
Arabs .

   He asked "Ali, tell me a number, that if we divide it by any number from
1-10 the answer will always come in the form of a whole number and not
as a  fraction." Ali Looked back at him and said, "Take the number of days in
a year and multiply it with the number of days in a week and you will
have your answer."

   The person got astonished but as he was a Mushrik he still didn't
believe  Ali  (ra). He calculated the answer Ali (AS) gave him. To his
amazement he came across the following results:

   The number of Days in a Year == 360 (in Arabic Calendar)

   The Number of Days in a Week == 7

   The product of the two numbers == 2520

   Now ... 2520 ÷ 1 == 2520

   2520 ÷ 2 == 1260

   2520 ÷ 3 == 840

   2520 ÷ 4 == 630

   2520 ÷ 5 == 504

   2520 ÷ 6 == 420

   2520 ÷ 7 == 360

   2520 ÷ 8 == 315

   2520 ÷ 9 == 280

   2520 ÷ 10== 252

   A person was about to die, and before dying he wrote his Will
which went as follows ...

   "I have 17 Camels, and I have three sons. Divide my Camels
in such a way, that  My eldest son gets half of them, the second one gets 1/3rd of the total and my youngest son gets 1/9th of the total number of Camels"

   After his death when the relatives read his will they got extremely
perplexed and said to each other that how can we divide 17 camels like this.

   So after a long hard thought they decided that there was only one
man in  Arabia who could help them: "Ali Ibne Abi Taalib."

   So they all came to the door of Ali (RATA) and put forward their    problem.

   Ali (ra) said, "Ok. I will divide the camels as per the man's will."

   Ali (RATA) said, "I will lend one of my camels to the total
which makes it

   18 (17+1=18), now lets divide as per his will"

   The Eldest gets 1/2 of 18 == 9

   The second one gets 1/3 of 18 == 6

   and The Youngest gets 1/9 of 18 == 2

   Now the total number of camels == 17

   Then Ali (ra) said, "Now I will take my Camel back"

[slm] Brother Dude, your story was very interesting.  Is this a Brother's only thread or may i add my 2 cents worth in here please ?   :-*

The things that make me "tick"   :-[

    1.  My Kids, hubby, family
    2.  Laughter .. can't live without it!!
    3.  Artsy/Craftsy stuff... like painting, crocheting (ya ya)
    4.  Sports ....  like Volleyball, table tennis, power walking (ok, well i consider power walking a sport  ;D  ), cricket, soccer (hubby gets me involved in all of this!!    8)
    5.  Reading (anything i can lay my hands on), when i get the chance...
    6.  ...and i love South Africa...  forget about all that you read in the media, we are a  great bunch of rainbow people :-)  Different cultures, languages (we have 9 official languages!!), religions, food..the diversity is mind boggling and is what makes this country so rich and wonderful, Alhumdulillah.  ..and the best part of it is, it never snows here in Durban, no earthquake, no volcanoe, no hurricanes.  Summer rain and hot winters  ;D  (bliss!)

.....that is about all i can think of :-)  Hope i don't kill your thread, Insha Allah.

Certainly not a “brothers only” thread! :)

I’ve read a bit on South African history and the culture, and would love to visit one day. Funny, I always find myself running into South Africans. One of my best customers is South African, and one of my business colleagues is too. Also, when I was young (16 & 17) I raced in a long distance Duathlon (run-bike-run) in Palm Springs, California. I’m not sure if this was after Apartheid was lifted (must have been…1990 & 1991???), but South Africans dominated our U-21 division...those guys were awesome in the heat!

 I thought "makes you tick" meant makes you angry....  lol  oh well,

well, lady murasaki... I take it purple is your fav color?
 Japan is soooo nice!!  I loved visiting my family  there... except the people in Tokyo aren't too friendly... Osaka has awesome people!!  One funny thing... one day I was jogging along the river (my family lives like in the boonies--mountains, hills, and rivers) and I saw a sign that said (in Japanese) "Beware of perverts"  LOL well, not really--when I was there as a little girl I was followed a few times by some guys... I got away though.. but scary... .  Last time I was there I was not a Muslim yet and not covering... most people asked if I was from Brazil... they didn't believe me when I told them I was half Japanese...  I wonder what they would think I look like now that I wear hijab?  Hmmm, guess I'll see when I go again!!

 I love to draw...  cook... travel... study languages and cultures... history... books (I don't read all that often but give me a book and I'll go on a reading spree for a month or two then take a break for like 5-6 months then go on a reading spree again)... pilates (it tones them tummy muscles like ya wouldn't believe!! )... soccer (went to Japan during the World Cup but never got my hands on tickets!! the internet and cell phone lines were all jammed up!!  Arggghhhh)... I love Japanese prank shows--they do some of the funniest and even cruel pranks ever (the US stations would be sued like crazy if they did anything close to what the Japanese do!!).

    I love visiting the Mosque..it gives me such a peaceful feeling when I pray there.  I like taking my Christian niece there... she likes to pray with everyone.. although she doesn't understand why we don't pray to Jesus. LOL  but whenever the Imam says "Allah hu akbar" she says it out loud and follows everyones' movements!!! Inshallah she will become Muslim when she is older and studies things on her own  :)

Hmmm... NOt sure what you mean...

- One thing that never fails to inspire me, and infuse life into my heart is being with, or actually simply seeing or saying salaam to a Righteous person.

It is said that there are some that when you see them they bring life to the heart. And it is also said that when the Righetous are remembered, rahmah descends. These people.

- Sports. Especially basketball, volleyball, soccerm badminton, downhill and crosscountry skiing, and rollerblading. Unfortunately, I don't get many opportunities to play/ participate. But tell me about an all sister's open gym, a soccer tournie for sisters and I'm the first one there :)

- Spending time in the geat outdoors. Feeding the ducks. Taking long walks. Watching the sunset. Witnessing the beauty of Allaah SWT's creation... *sigh*

- Yet... Learning about and studying Islam has to be the absolute sweetest thing of all. Walhamdulillaah.

PS- Oh and did I mention... visiting the message board. Alhamdulillah I feel like I really know alot of you guys, and some of you probably have no clue in how high esteem I hold you, and your opinions. I've learnt so much from this board. Subhanallaah. Jazaakumullaahu Khayran.

Hi, this is Cara and I can log in but not post, this happens once in
a while when I am on a different pc than my home one.

What makes me tick???

My husband and the unconditional love and acceptance he gives me.
The love in his eyes, his laugh and the smile that shows me he
is happy to be in my company.

Waking in the morning and going out on my porch seeing the blue sky,
feeling the gentle breeze on my face, hearing my wind chimes and
hearing my horses snicker gently to me cause they are glad to see me.

Seeing my grown sons hang out together and being not only brothers but friends.

Seeing a baby animal being born and then taking it's first steps.

Watching the veggies I grow start to pop up threw the earth from seeds.

Seeing the look on a friends face when they see something I made for them.

Hearing a stream, brook or creek as the water runs past me.

Sunrises and sunsets.

WOW God/Allah is wonderful and made many wonderful things here on this
earth for us to enjoy and appreciate.

from seeds in the ground.

Hard work, toil and trouble.

Personally, I find that the harder life becomes, the more strongly I feel a simple joy in living, just for Allah's sake, just for Him.  Deep sunsets and driving sleet, great conifers and tiny weeds, gold and mud all become the same...all to delight in, all to learn from and to marvel at ...

I think it was D H Lawrence who remarked once that no thing in nature feels sorry for itself. The little bird drops like a stone from its branch, its little life torn away by the bitter cold, without ever having felt sorry for itself...
Learning about and studying Islam has to be the absolute sweetest thing of all. Walhamdulillaah
Ahh, my heart's cry is worded before my untrained tongue hurls it to the winds as words...! May Allah increase us all in beneficial knowledge. Ameen.

In all honesty, I don't know what that one true thing that makes me tick is.  ??? Right now it's my family. I think without them my life would come to a screaching halt. I am trying to expand my horizons a bit though by going to school because I know one day my daughter will grow up, get married, and move out.  :'(  And insha-Allah going to school would be a permanent thing for me since I enjoy it so much. So I suppose that's the thing that's making me tick, huh?! ::)

About what ticks me off...well...ignorant people >:(. Not mentally slow but the ones that think they know it all. They just make me want to slap them silly!
