Excercise??

It takes a lot of willpower, but you won't feel healthy unless you excercise....no matter how skinny you are.  I'd say take up running..it's so entertaining.  20 minutes a day to start and don'f forget to warm-up and stretch...

Just quit eating junk food (it doesn't taste good anyway ;) )...and it's honestly not hard to quit.  The only junk food I ever had a problem with was Coke...and one fine morning I woke up and said "I quit"...and that was the end of my carbonated beverage addiction.  (Oh wait, not true, I am kinda addicted to tonic water, which gives me heartburn, so I can't drink too much of it anyway....and perrier is actually healthy, so I doubt that it counts.)

Eat lots of fruit and veggies...they taste yummy and they fill up your stomach so that you don't need to eat as much rice or chocolate :D

Find a tennis or badminton partner.

Fill up your time with stuff to do, so that you aren't bored enough to stroll into the kitchen every 5 minutes.  Seriously.  Take up a hobby (no no, cooking is not a hobby I'd recommend..lol..)

Other than that, forget diets...dude!  They do the opposite of what theyre meant to.  I was on a diet to gain weight a few years ago...I swear, I used to dread mealtimes.  I would find all sorts of excuses.  So in the end, my mom made me quit the diet, coz I was eating LESS than I normally did.  And she stocked the cupboards with peanut butter and the fridge with cheese.  lol.  (I know, and I'm giving you a lecture on HEALTHY eating...u can ignore me now.)  YOU know how much you need to eat in order to stay alive and satisfied.  and so already YOU know what your diet should consist of.  May Allah make it ez on you.

Keep the faith, sista...I think we discussed in a previous thread...just don't worry....make duaa, ask for willpower, that's the only thing that'll get you anywhere with this goal.

Wasalaam.

Drink lots of water
The combo package
Dude

I'll venture in, and then leave the ladies alone. Sure-fire combo to help in weight loss:

1. Lot's of water...upwards of 3 liters / day.
2. Reduce your daily intake by 500 calories. Easily obtained by cutting out junk foods. Replace with carrot sticks, or some veggie that you can snack on to satisfy cravings. Hint: peppers in your food (yellows & reds mainly) help you feel a lot more "full" than you actually are.
3. Cardiovascular exercise to get your heart rate up to ~60-70% maximum heart rate for 20 minutes, 4 times / week. See a consultant to determine your maximum heart rate, and talk to a doctor before starting a program. This may be too strenuous if you have any previous conditions, or high cholesterol levels. In the meantime, fast paced walking will do.

Supplement with A LOT of stretching. I find this the toughest to maintain, because one should really spend upwards of 15-20 minutes stretching after a good run, but who wants to do it? My wife has started Pillates, which is a form of Yoga. Once per week, one hour. Great for muscle tone and stretching.

Running is great, but not for everyone. Hats off to anyone who can do it 6-7 times / week. Personally, I need to mix it up. Plus, with my history of injuries, running tends to beat me up a little with the constant pounding on the knees. Now I spend 20 minutes in the pool 4 x / week in the off-season, just to keep the lungs and heart happy. I won't run until I have to start up again.

Follow a simple plan like above, and you'll get long term results, and start noticing them in the short term (after about 3 weeks you'll be strutting in the mirror). You'll also notice you stomach start to shrink (in the inside), and you'll only be able to eat so much food during a sitting.

Good luck!

I am losing weight and toning up right now with bellydancing exercise videos and pilates!!!  The bellydancing is a fun low-to high impact cardio exercise while the pilates is just all floor exercises.  You don't need tennis shoes or any shoes for either one of them!!  Its pretty hard at first but it starts to get... well.. a tiny bit easier... I won't give it up though!!!

there is a website called www.fitday.com where you can enter your hight and weight and your goal date for so many pounds lost... and you can enter in your foods and activities to see how many calories you are taking in and burning off.  its a good place  I keep track of how long I can exercise and its amazing how a little goes a long way!!

Where did u get the bellydancing vids from?!!!  I've been wanting to learn that for over a yr now and still not found anywhere that I can learn it!  I went to Scotland last yr, and met some Arab girls who were trying to teach me.  But alas as I wasn't there for long, I didn't really pick it up, and whatever they did teach me, I wasn't very good at anyway! Maybe u can teach me then, hehe  ;)

As for losing the weight I would agree with what's already been written.  I think I've written this somewhere else too: loads of water, veg and fruit and, damn that word, exercise!!  I've been meaning to join the gym since october, and still not done so!    ::)

Here are all the tapes I have been using:

beginners:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000055ZGK/qid=1050454309/sr=8-4/ref=sr_8_4/104-3418707-6279910?v=glance&s=video&n=507846

this 1st tape is for very beginners and the second one does a bit more toning bellydance moves.  they are so fun!!! the third tape is killer on the arms!!  I lost 1 inch around my waist 1 week after starting these ones!!  They all teach you a choreographed routine at the end of each.

They have tapes that are more geared towards fitness but I saw some video clips of them and not all of the moves are bellydancing.  I like the ones I used much much better.

beginners to intermediate:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006IQA2/qid=1050454353/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3418707-6279910?v=glance&s=video

The 1st tape is best to do after learning the moves on the 1st set of videos by Neena and Veena Bidasha--the camera seems to sometimes show a diff. area of Dolphina's body but you will get the hang of it--great toning!!
the 2nd tape is killer on the legs and good for the abs.  It is sooo fun!!
I don't have the other 2 tapes yet...still debating on if I should buy them... the whole set was not available at the time I purchased these two--its the best deal to get the set

more intermediat/advanced

http://www.h2net.net/p/dancersuz/videos.html

Suzanna DelVecchio's tapes are amazing!!! the sound quality could be better but...she is an incredible dancer and instructor!!  I 1st bought "Lock, Roll and Flutter"  and can do much of it but decided to buy "Precision Motion Workout" shortly after.  Boy!! Talk about sweating!! Its a great video... I will be ordering "Dynamic Combinations" later on once I have mastered "Precision.." .   She really is an awesome dancer!!  Her videos are pricey but definitely worth the price!!

Here is another I am contemplating buying:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006II7D/qid=1050454808/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14/104-3418707-6279910?v=glance&s=video

And for the Pilates... here is what I am using:

http://www.winsorpilates.com/

these are very nice videos for major toning of the abs!!

I did not buy everything from these sites... you should shop around... look on ebay and stuff--  except for Suzanna Del Vecchio's videos--I have had no luck finding any of them cheaper!!

This is the most fun to get exercise in and just dance away!!!
Its fun now cuz I can shimmy like a pro!!

So strange, i was watching an 'infomerical' (is that wot they're called??) today and caught the tail end of some pilates thing...missed the whole what it actually is, and just caught all the women at the end sayin' how it really works...but you know neva believe what they say on the telly....HOWEVER...when pple start endorsing it on the madinah board, then it might just be worthwhile lookin' into!  8)

Anybody got any good tips for losing tummy weight as soon as possible?!?!?! Apart from sit ups, is there anything else??

The best thing for losing tummy weight are two things:

cardio-to burn off the fat--even if you did a thousand sit-ups your muscles
will be covered by fat if you don't get it down

and muscle-toning--like sit-ups or pilates--I highly recommend the pilates.
you will feel longer and leaner!!  It really does work!

salaampeaceshalom, so did you ever purchase any of the videos?  I'm just curious as to what your reviews are if you did.   I just today bought two new videos!!!  It is Afro-Brazilian-Carribean dance workout videos.  They got really great reviews and I think if would be fun to learn even more different dance styles--all the while getting a great workout!!

asalaamu alaykum,

does anyone have tips on how to get rid of a postpartum tummy?  I had a baby a few months
ago and was under the impression that the flab just magically disappears.  then i find
out it will never go away unless you work it off. I've lost most of the weight easily and
just have a big gut left.  So any advice on how to get rid of it fast before it fills up
and gets bigger?

Excersize! It is the only cure for the tummy. Sit ups ( crunches )...done correctly... Weight loss will not tone the stomach muscles.
Don't forget your side muscles!

Ya gotta remember it was stretched like a rubber ban for 9 months!

For all those who have the Windsor pilates tape--do you have to be really flexible to do it? Bc i am SOOO not flexible and I saw the infomercial for it and it looked like you had to be pretty limber to do some of those exercises...I want to try it but don't know if it'll be worth it...? Jazaks for any replies!

I love the Winsor Pilates tapes.  I am not flexible at all so of course I can't "reach" like the more flexible people on the tape do it.  I have gotten much better than when I started, though.  It is making me more flexible a little bit at a time.  I love how I feel a couple hours after the workout---I feel completely long, lean and stretched out!!  It will tighten you up as you get better and better at it.  Just beware that it is not a video for weightloss--you will have to do some cardio other than this tape if you wish to lose weight.
