"The stomach is the home of disease, and abstinence is the head of every remedy. So make this your custom." - Prophet Muhammad (S). Haven't found the source yet.

"One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters keeps your doctor alive." - Quote from one of sites listed below, of a hieroglyph found in an ancient Egyptian tomb

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah,
Before reading anything below, check out the Introduction to M. Nestle's book, "Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health".

Disclaimer: None of this is from mainstream sources, just some things that I found interesting. Allaahu A'lim/God knows if any of the information in the articles below is true. One thing, however, is that even if you only rely on "gold standard" studies (ex/ studies found in JAMA, NEJM, etc), almost every single study known to man is limited to some degree, which researchers accept to a certain extent. With the advent of corporate interests that sponsor many studies, we have a whole lot of other issues to take into consideration.

Take this with a grain of salt (no pun intended. Most of the articles below are not primary studies; they're mainly just articles that refer to other studies). Although not everything is "poison," by the same token, not everything the FDA has approved is "harmless."

Second disclaimer: Everything that is decreed, will happen, regardless. We should take into consideration both that, and the issue of preventive measures.

Third Disclaimer: I don't support veganism. Just so it's clear, dairy products and meat (besides pork) are not haraam, in and of themselves. But keep in mind that the Prophet (S) had a mostly vegetarian diet, except on special occasions when meat was served ('Eid, weddings, etc). Otherwise, neither he nor the sahabah could afford or promoted a diet consisting of rich foods.

Allaahu A'lim.
