can you get to the canadian rockies?  I love banff and lake louise is one of the most beautiful spots on earth. and the highway to jasper is incredible and Yoho national park is great also.  Victoria is a great city off on vancouver Island about (if i remember) a 2 hour ferry ride from the city of vancouver.  But Dude would be the guy you want to talk to.  But my opinion is very tilted since I don't really think of cities when I travel.  I thiink of  natural areas mostly.  I guess that is kinda what makes me tick , the outdoors.

I've only been to Vancouver in Canada, and it was nice.  There's a lot of open space on the drive there from Seattle.  Oh and the best part was the exchange rate.  When I went it was 1.5 canadian dollars for a US dollar.  It was amazing how inexpensive things were, especially with sales at the mall.   :D   Oh and be sure to save your receipts, and turn them in at customs (i think its customs)  as you are a foreigner you don't pay tax.

Come on up!

Mike hit some great hot spots. Victoria is gorgeous, and you can find some mosques in the area if you want.

I always suggest to people to spend a couple of days up in Whistler, which is a 1-1/2 – 2 hour drive from Vancouver ( http://www.mywhistler.com/ ). The atmosphere, friendliness, and pure beauty are second to none. The best way to experience Whistler is by renting a condo inside one of the Villages (main village, North village, or Backcomb village). You want to be within walking distance of everything- park the car, and leave it alone until you leave. Various festivals in both the summer or winter. Spring is busy…only fall is relatively quiet. That said, I’ve spent time there in October- still breathtaking.

The lakes are great for swimming. If you ski or snowboard, plenty. Summer has great glacier skiing, and ATV, river raft, or mountain biking. But, really…if you just want to come up to relax and enjoy the village, that’s fine too.

I’d move up in a heartbeat, if it wasn’t for my work keeping me in the Lower Mainland.

Yes: US to Canadian goes a long way too.

PM me if you want, and let me know your interests.

Dude,  I think we are going to whistler maybe late summer early fall.  A time share wants us up there to check out their condo  I think club intrawest.  For anyone that is a good way to travel if you don't mind high pressure salesmen.  That is another thing that makes me tick,  I love talking to time share salespeople.  I make like i am an easy mark and sound really interested and then when it is time to close the deal for them i list all the reasons why it is a bad investment.  But I have stayed at some nice places for very cheap. oh by the way  Ducks in a 4 game sweeeeeppp over detroit.

Duha,

If you are going to Vancouver, you *have* to make a stop at, "Death By Chocolate!"  The BEST dessert place in the Canada (IMHO).

Chocolate is the only thing on the menu...and oddly enough you can have a salad, a burger...even dessert ;D

I think they have two locations -- just ask anyone.

With peace,

Assalamu alaikum,

I had just written a long message for you that would have given you  you web sites about attractions in Vancouver, when some glitch in either Internet Explorer or on my hard drivemade me leave the Madina, and enter some military site.  When I hit the 'back' button, my post was gone.  :'(

So, instead of giving you all the information I wanted to, I will give you only one, because it has a menu that will suggest activities based on your interests.:  www.vancouver-bc.com/Recreation.

Well, maybe I'll give you a few more:

http://www.vancouverchinesegarden.com/
http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org -->  The rest of the UBC campus is beautiful, too.  The Japanese garden and the view of the ocean from Cecil Green Park are especially nice.  www.attractions.ubc.ca

http://www.grousemountain.com

When I think of more, I'll try to add them, in sha'a allah.

The suspension bridge is in Lynn Valley, on the North Shore. Safe, a little scarry though. Go accross, then take a left and walk down to the pools, and catch the kids cliff jumping into the river.

I spent many a summer day in my youth jumping from the 30' cliffs down to the cool glacier water. Unfortunately, there used to be the odd accident, but not in that last little bit. People are taking more precausions.

Anyhow, great place to spend the day.

Assalamu alaikum,

You can find a list of mosques in the Vancouver area at http://www.islam-canada.com/community/localguide.htm  As for restaurants, http://www.zabihah.com/bc.shtml lists some of them.  If you like Chinese food, I'd recommend Bo Kong at 3068 Main Street.  While the owners aren't muslim, all the food served there is completely vegetarian (and absolutely delicious!)

I hope you enjoy your trip, in sha'a allah.

Leslie

         AsalamAlayKum,

I used to live in Vancouver.

ONe day after Salat, we were putting on our shoes and a brother asked,

        " Is it raining ? "

         To which I replied,

        " Is it Vancouver ? "

We all had a good long laugh at that one.

InshAllah, bring your own umbrella or two.

And take the Ferry at the foot of the Last Skytrain station, to North Vancouver.

Certainly the cheapest and easiest way to get great views of Vancouver Harbour.

If your walk due north from the NorthVan Ferry Terminal, you can even
get Montreal Style Kosher Bagels from the nice Jewish Family that runs the
bakery. Because it's Pesach (passover) now, y'should be able to get some
special Kosher items too... But I digress.

After NorthVan, visit HorseShoe Bay, look up at the 'Lions' Mountain,
and then drive back south over the lions gate bridge or ironworkers' bridge into
       Stanley Park.

If you end up in 'Kits', aka the Kitsilino neighbourhood, definitely visit

       Sophie's Cosmic Cafe.

It's like a timewarp. If you've ever visited the 'Rock and Roll McDonald's' in Chicagoland
YOu'll dig Sophie's Cosmic Cafe. Bring your camera!

If you end up at the mouth of False Creek, Pay for parking and wander around
Granville Island *which really isn't an island), this is the requisite artsy tourist
spot that most waterfront cities have.

Skip breakfast and enjoy fresh fish for lunch from the food vendors here.

Did I mention bring your umbrella?

A final FREE recommendation I'd say is to pop by the Vancouver Library,
The Coliseum architecture is rather picture-esque, and worth some film of Compact Flash space.

Then there's Robson Street, Ahem, Wreck Beach, and Broadway Earls Restaurant across
from the Ramada Hotel at 898 west Broadway...

so...here I is... all nostalgic like for my former home of Vancouver on the Left Coast...

And it's overcast here in Toronto too today, so that can only help get me into the mood....

          hhhmmmph ... Sighhhh...

                                             ~ HiMY! ~
