I get these stupid "compliments" all the time!
"That a nice *garb* you are wearing"...
"Beautiful *costume*!!!"
"Where do you get your *garments* they are really nice!"
"Wow! That *attire* looks pretty on you!"

I just get so flustered. I mean why can't I just be wearing a nice outfit? Afterall i spend good money on my "designer" Jelbabs  ::)

So how do you respond to these "compliments"..cuz they are well meaning, but really annoying! I just end up mumbling.."yeah thanks!"...agghhhh.

Sis,
I-do-not-wear-garbs! Maliha :-)

Salam sis:-)

This is quite interesting, lol...different strokes for different folks.  I have a friend who has no problem wearing the same jilbaab for several days, as she says she does obviously change the inner clothing.  But I guess in our culture it is *really* funny to see someone walking around in the same outfit 2 days in a row...(we would always laugh at the teachers in school who arrived wearing the same clothing as yesterday, but it was ok with them, they were German :) )  My family knows that I am seriously depressed if I end up wearing the same jilbaab for 2 consecutive days...I just have a problem with wearing things more than once without washing, whether inner or outer clothing... 8)

I think in the end it's up to you...of course, like school uniform, wearing the same thing everyday just makes life a WHOLE lot less complicated.

Take care, wherever you are and whatever jilbaab you have on today

Salamat
Shahida :-)

In Mombasa it wasn't a big deal at all to wear the same jilbab out all the time. You just washed it, and wore it..and that's it. It was simple.
Its a lot harder in the states though. Because I work, I don't like wearing the same thing twice in a row. I have multiple Jilbabs and hijabs and I just coordinate different styles.
I also have regular outfits, so once in a while I wear long skirts, etc.
Variety and creativity is a must :)

Sis,

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah,
It's not unusual for a sister to wear jilbaab regularly (ie, everyday - different ones, tho), even here in the states, walhamdulillaah. In fact, it's the norm in some areas!  :)

Anyhow, back to the topic, sorry to hear of your frustration, sis Maliha. Jannah's on pt, they usually don't know what to call our clothing. Think of it as a da'wah opp. The last time someone made a similar comment (it's usually meant as a compliment, so take it that way!), I wasn't really thinking and just told her: "Thanks, I got it at Marshall's. It's called a scarf."  :)

I think they think our clothing is more exotic than it really is. No point in calling it something exotic, unless they want to learn a different language. Their grandmothers were more covered back in the day than we are.

Again, good da'wah opp. :)

Here's a similar thread from way back that may or may not help:
