Swearing or promising upon the Quran

Salamat brothers and sisters,
Some of you can remember me some dont, but inspite of everything else that goes on i have a question about the quran.

Like the americans swear upon the bible towards testimony, whether they lie or not is thier preference.
Nothing bad happens to them after lying such upon a holy book. I was wondering, my mother told me a story about a brother inlaw or something of the sort who was cheating her out of something, she made him swear upon the Quran and the day after he died or was permanantly hospitalized (cant remember which).
So if i swear upon the Quaran, thinking that i am going to tell the truth, but i do not keep my word....Will something bad happen to me (for example)? Am i going to feel Allah's Wrath? Will he squash me like a bug or something?
Or will i just be pentalized in the end of my life for not keeping my word when sweared over the Quaran? I thought it was an interesting topic....please do let me in upon this insight you are knowledgable of this.

Thanks alot Masalama []

as far as i know: if you swear by anything -- you should swear only by Allah, not the book of Allah, or anything else (although in a sense swearing by the quran is swearing by Allah, since the quran is considered the speech of Allah)

now as to whether anything will happen to you if you lie in an oath sworn by Allah

(1) if you are a very pious person you may see immediate punishment.  in this case the punishment is actually a blessing as you get to see the fruit of your actions immediately and are unlikely to repeat the mistake.  by punishing you Allah means to warn you about what you are doing...and being warned by Allah is an enormous favor

(2) if the one wronged is a very pious person (like really pious) then you may immediately meet doom and disaster.  this as i understand is a sign of Allah's good favor with the wronged person --- and there is a hadith about those who wage war against Allah's beloved -- Allah wages war against them

(3) if niether is the case, then you may get punished big time in the next life.  there are hadith stating that special punishments are reserved for the particularly odious folk who give Allah their word and then break it. meaning those who swear by Allah and either lie or break their oaths carelessly.  in this case of the normal person, Allah essentially gives people rope to hang themselves with or free themselves. and this is in reality much more dangerous than getting immediately punished because it emboldens people to repeat the sin, whereas if a brick suddenly falls out of sky and hits you on the head, you are unlikely to have the audacity to repeat the mistake.  (well actually if a brick hits you, you are unlikely to get up off the ground :) )

....and Allah knows best....

Allah is Most Merciful, Most Compassionate, and is very loving of those who turn to Him in Repentence.  Allah is more happy with a person who turns his or heart towards Him than a man in the middle of the desert whose only camel has become lost, with all his supplies and food gone, and after looking everywhere he is reunited with his mount, and exclaims in joy "Oh Allah, you are my slave and I am your master!"  There are eight gates of Paradise, and there is a gate that will remain open until the sun rises from the West.  That is the gate entered through repentence.  Swearing an oath by Allah that one breaks can be atoned for through sincere and heartwrenching repentence to the Lord of the Universe.  The Prophet Muhammad taught that if one

-clothes ten destitute people, giving each of them one garment or more, the minimum of each being that in which salah is valid

-or if one wishes, he may feed ten destitute people

-or fasts for three consecutive days

in true sincere turning to God, it will expiate a broken oath taken in His Name or Attributes.

Assalam-o-Alaikum,

Actually this is a reply to one of the posts (i'm sorry i didnt know where and how to
post it because i'm new to this place) made by lightningatnite, where he tells us about the
case of a man who has lost his camel and later when he gets reunited says...

O Allah, You are my slave and I am your master.

I am not sure whether or if I understood this analogy right, but isnt it supposed to be,

O Allah, I am your slave and You are my master.

I was just confused. I probably did not understand the thing right. If so, then will
someone please explain what the brother was trying to convey to us.

Jazakallah Khair,

Peace.

[slm] Anon :)

The story the brother mentioned comes from a sahih hadith..here's the full narration:

Book 037, Number 6618:
Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Allah is more pleased with the repentance of a servant as he turns towards Him for repentance than this that one amongst you is upon the camel in a waterless desert and there is upon (that camel) his provision of food and drink also and it is lost by him, and he having lost all hope (to get tbat) lies down in the shadow and is disappointed about his camel and there he finds that camel standing before him. He takes hold of his nosestring and then out of boundless joy says: 0 Lord, Thou art my servant and I am Thine Lord. He commits this mistake out of extreme delight.

(Sahih Muslim)

[slm],

That is the point!!! The man is so happy that he loses his sense for a bit and his tongue slips, although in his heart he did not mean what he said!

And Allah is much more happy than that magnitude of happiness (if you can measure it!) displayed by the man.
