Well it sort of crazy .... since i am in university this year .. I have to travel downtown for school so on the subway you see a lot of people with masks on there face :(

Honestly... sars only really affects the older crowd... all the people that have died from sars are eldelry people! Its really sad!

People are becoming sort of racist ......like thinking "every asian person has sars," well that idea is sort of getting out of hand

I notice sometimes when an asian person starts to cough on the bus people will like move to a whole other area or not even sit near asians.  Honestly thats the most ridiculous thing!!!!!!  >:(  ----- makes me ANGRY!

Well I notice no one wants to visit Toronto cus of the whole sars thing but its not that bad :( Don't be shy to visit us!!!!!!!

Nice meeting u hanif? Ummm as for your comment I was speaking in reference to Toronto I don't know any teenagers who died of sars here.  As for people infected with sars its predominately the elderly however, there are a few young people who have been affected, however, they have not died from the disease from what i am aware :)

thx for the info about hong kong though ---- enlightened me :)

OK, Singapore reporting as of 24 April 2003

Treated & Discharged: 114

In hospital: 58
(In Critical condition: 18 )

Dead: 15 +2*(pending post-Mortem)
----------------

Total No. of cases: 189
Index cases: 7
Suspect cases: 95
Under Home Quarantine: 2467
----------------

The PM of SIngapore sent an open letter to all S'poreans on SARS, published in all major Newspapers. http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/

By June, inshaALlah, all Singaporean households would be issued with a themometer. (but my mom, bought one already... so, we'll have two now :))

Those who break Home quarantine orders would be fined heavily.

All taxis, would have to roll down their windows, many buildings & schools were disinfected (though not rigorously as other countries). In all schools, students would be given declaration forms. In my workplace, we are to sign declaration forms every 10 days. But visitiors would have to do it every time they visit the building. All around buildings, schools, mosques, U would see posters on SARS, and the symptoms.

So, basically, I'm feeling the seriousness in all of these. The mutation of the virus, is very scary, as it is very fast. Younger people are getting the virus, and dying. People are boosting up their immune system, coz, as to date, there is no cure, and those who get well from the disease, basically depended heavily on their immune system.

Currently, we're on a nation-wide search for all those who had visited teh Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market between 5th April & 19th April. The market is closed down, as there is a man who contacted SARS, worked there during that period.

Thing is, there are still some people who are irresponsible enough to still be around others when they have symptoms of SARS. A lot of us are very irritated by this kind of behaviour.

Some, people, get very paranoid, like they do not take public transports at all, or they wouldn't be in the same train with a health worker from Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Tan Tock Seng Hospital is a hospital that is delegated to combat the SARS virus. All SARS cases and suspected cases are referred there. But alhamdulillah, oru health workers get a lot of motivation and gratitude from the nation with thank you cards, dedications over the radio as well as the printed media by indiciduals and organisations.

There is also a donation drive to help the family of SARS patients. The govt is also helping by giving abt $70 per day to those who are adversely affected by this epidemic.

It would be unusual to find someone with masks, but we do see a few around.

But personally, I feel safe, that Singapore is taking a lot of precaution, at higher level than WHO standards, alhamdulillah.

So, inshaAllah, lets pray for peace, and safety and good health, and may Allah give us a cure, as well as guidance, during these tough times.

I left for U.S from M'sia on 15th Mar. Transit in Taiwan.Noticed ppl wearing mask. Didn't bother much.

When I was in U.S , keep up with the news in Asia. Still not bothered much as war in Iraq started.

Left U.S 30 Mar. Since I took the Eva Airways (Taiwan airways) they had news on SARS a lot. Started to get a little anxious but was too sleepy to think abt it.

Transit in Taiwan again. Saw a lot of people wearing the mask and I didn't. Met another manager from the company I work with. He had his mask on. He told me how bad the situation was since he understood mandarin. Then, I got more anxious. I slept most of the time on the flight back to S'pore.

Arrived in S'pore. They didn't let us get off the plane straight away. That was when I was so worried. We  waited 10 mins. They had nurse waiting for us outside. Checked whether we had fever or running nose. The manager told me there was a man on the plane that admitted to the flight attendance he was having running nose and coughing. I tried not to think abt it while I was waiting for my flight back to M'sia. The manager I was with kept telling me all abt this and he had his mask on.

Arrived in M'sia. 2 days later they told anyone who transit/came from the listed countries to quarantine ourselves at home for 10 days as precautionary measure.  So, I worked from home for 10 days. 10 days that made me realize how fragile life is.  10 scariest days where I kept thinking.. do i have the virus? Did I infect anyone if I had it? Who's gonna take care of my mom if I wasn't here? All I could do was.... leave everything to Him. If it is my time, it'll be time no matter what. I asked Him to protect mom if I were not here. I asked Him to grant the best health to my husband.

I never talked abt this to anyone before this.

Wow -- Amin to everyone’s prayers!

It's so weird -- I keep on hearing semi-conflicting stories.  One of my friends spoke to her Meds Professor last week (he had just come back from Hong Kong), and he wasn't worried in the slightest about anything!

In fact, he even made it a point to say that more people die of pneumonia, than SARS -- and that SARS has actually been around for a long time, but it's only making the news now because of the large geographical spread.

I think the ethicising of this disease is terrible -- it was good to see Chretien having brunch at an Oriental-run restaurant.  Too bad it only happened once, and he's not done much since  ::) ???

With peace,

me too. Was actually on medical leave for the past 3 days ... but feeling much better now. Alhamdulillah ...

but my nose is still a bit blocked and bits of coughing now and then - but thats enough to get all the stares :o in the bus on my way to work!!! ... talk abt paranoid !!!

I even had to go back to the Dr twice just to get a letter from him to say that I am fit for work ... else my boss said that i shld just 'rest' at home for a few more days!

and the sad thing is that the Saudi embassy had actually stopped issuing visas to those intending to perform Umrah for the coming months ...

[i]Tourist arrivals to Singapore plunge 56 per cent in early April ...

Tourist arrivals to Singapore dropped by about 78,000, or a staggering 56 per cent, in early April from a year ago due to the SARS outbreak and the war in Iraq.

According to the Singapore Tourism Board, tourist arrivals from all the island's major markets registered double digit declines.

The number of tourists arriving from Malaysia, Australia, America, Thailand and Hong Kong all fell by more than 60 per cent. Hong Kong had the biggest drop of 82 per cent, but in absolute terms it was Indonesia which had the largest decline, with 11,700 fewer tourists to Singapore.

Among the reasons cited for the sharp fall in tourist arrivals were the wide-spread SARS outbreak, the travel advisories against SARS-hit areas including Singapore, as well as reduction in airline flights and seats.

Meanwhile, for the first time since the SARS outbreak, Saudi Arabia has stopped issuing visas to Singaporeans. Since Sunday, the kingdom has barred entry to nationals from Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam as a precaution to prevent the spread of SARS.

Saudi Airlines has also suspended all flights to Singapore.

I live in Toronto...and honestly, I find the whole situation incredibly comical.  That is a simple attribute to my extremely warped sense of humor...

People are paranoid, and I mean really really paranoid.  Yesterday, this girl was coughing on the overcrowded Go Train, and everyone around her started inching away.  Meanwhile at my school, you see people taking advantage of this epidemic to get out of exams (yup yup!  the perils of academia rule, once again.)  You see people walking around in masks...but only in the Pacific Mall area (lol)...

Okay okay...that's not true, some people wear masks on the subway...and they were distributing masks the other day on the sidewalk.  They have also been distributing free hand sanitizers around my campus.  (free goods....us poor university students gotta love that.) Also they closed down a few hospitals...they canceled all unimportant surgeries, and they shut down an entire department in my University.  (lucky ducks don't have to write their exams!)

David Heyman (WHO official heading this thing) said that they have found 5 cases in Australia, all linking back to the big T dot.  Our Health Minister got really huffed about that.  But the truth is, I think Toronto is taking it pretty lightly.  I know in California, they quarantined passengers of entire planes to control this stuff...

Our economy has gone down a whopping 2 per cent in the past 6 weeks.  My friend canceled her trip to Toronto...and I haven't seen her in a whole year..

They are checking people's temperatures at the airport.  That really bites...because I'm traveling on Monday, and I do not want to be quarantined upon arrival at my destination.

Honestly, there's no reason to worry.  ;) Come to Toronto, catch a Leaf's game...it's sunny nowadays  :)

Wasalaam.

FRIDAY SERMON, SINGAPORE
25 APRIL 2003M / 23 SAFAR 1424H
Lessons from Tribulations

Bless Friday Congregation,

Stay righteous to Allah in totality for staying righteous will elevate someones status in Allahs eyes and will bring him bliss here and the hereafter. Remember to thank Allah in whatever condition; especially for the nikmat of Iman and Islam He has given. With this nikmat of Iman and Islam, we will be blessed on this earth and the hereafter.

Whatever happens on this earth is Allahs will and it is indeed the sunnah of Allah that there is reason and effects to everything that happens. The same applies to mens life. His state of being changes from time to time. At times he is at ease and at times sad. There are times where he is healthy and there are times where he is ill. At times he laughs and at times he cries. We constantly need to remind ourselves that life is full of tests, trials and challenges for us to overcome. If we are able to overcome the challenge and go through life well and at ease, we are considered to have succeeded. Allah commanded in Al-Baqarah, verse 155 which means:

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient.
Look at the situation of human kind now. We are faced with numerous tribulations; the economic slump, the Iraq war and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak that is spreading in some parts of the world and our home country, Singapore. These situations have happened before and there is no guarantee that such things would not happen again. This is the sunnah of Allah as mentioned in the ayat read earlier. Allah will test us from time to time for us to view whether we have succeeded or failed in overcoming the challenges.

Blessed Brothers,

History has recorded some misfortunes. Imam Ibn Kathir in his history book AlBidayah Wan Nihayahrecorded that during the Caliphate of Saidina Umar Al Khattab r.a, there was an a cholera outbreak and a drought that caused Hijaz to be very dry until that year was named as Aamul Majaah(Year of Starvation)

In todays khutbah, let us together take this opportunity to gain lessons from what had happened and how the Muslims overcame the difficulties that had befallen on them. May this benefit us. Imam Ibn Kathir recorded how Saidina Umar r.a had written to the governors in various districts to render assistance to those affected in Madinah.  They answered to his call and sent what was written as large troops of wheat and various foods.

It was also mentioned that Saidina Abu Ubaidah arrived in Madinah with four thousand-transport animals that carry food. Saidina Umar then ordered for the food to be distributed until it had ran out. Saidina Umar later instructed that Saidina Abu Ubaidah be paid four thousand dirham but Saidina Abu Ubaidah refused and Saidina Umar had to press him until he finally accepted the payment.

This was the attitude of people in the past when mishaps happen. Everybody tried to do what he or she can to ensure everybodys welfare without thinking of earnings, let alone personal or tribal needs.

Blessed Brothers,

We express gratitude to Allah that with the Sars now, we see the enthusiasm and positiveness of our government and national community. From the media coverage we can witness how doctors and nurses work hard to render their services at hospitals. We also see the community raising funds to provide financial assistance to the needy affected by the phenomenon. Each and every one of us has a role to play in helping others. Realize that as long as we have the attitude in helping others, Allah will send his help to us as mentioned in a long hadis narrated by Imam Abu Hurairah r.a :

Which means
and Allah always help his creations as long as his creation help his fellow brother&

In facing todays situation, remember that everybody has a role in upholding peace for mankind. Islam teaches us to take precautionary measures in ensuring cleanliness in order to maintain the peaceful life. We are taught to eat not only what is halal but also nutritious. Islam also encourages us to aid in good works. Follow the advice and guidelines given by the relevant authorities in keeping a healthy environment. Let us not be selfish beings while others are working hard in doing good deeds for the societal benefit.

Blessed Brothers,

In ending this khutbah, let us together listen to Allahs commandment in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 22 and 23. May we leave this Friday prayer with increased positiveness and enthusiasm. We hope to put more faith in Allah in facing the oncoming days.

Which means: In order that you may not grieve at the things that you fail to get, nor rejoice over that which has been given to you. And Allah likes not prideful boasters.

Those who are misers and enjoin upon people miserliness. And whosoever turns away from Faith, then Allah is Rich. Worthy of all praise.

Why are some of you in here treating this SARS epidemic as something to shrug off?  And one comment that the whole thing is pretty comical is pretty scary to me.  It is better to be safe than sorry because of the fact that it is spreading and more and more are dying.  They have traced SARS cases elsewhere in the world to Toronto.   If I was living over there I sure would be wearing a mask.  I wouldn't want to take the chance of not knowing I've caught it and ending up spreading it to others.
On the news yesterday they were interviewing travelers just getting off a flight from Toronto and there were several of them who were saying that they are not worried at all and that they would not consider even wearing a mask even though they were handing them out for free.
Its a good thing they are trying to start early and hand out masks for free--would you all over there in Toronto want it to spread like in China?  This is what they are trying to prevent.  Its taking a chance to think "Oh, it won't happen to me--that only happens to others"

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 624:

Narrated Saud:

The Prophet said, "If you hear of an outbreak of plague in a land, do not enter it; but if the plague breaks out in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place."

Not sure about its authenticity. Check with a scholar, but I found it in Bukhari online.  Two other ahadith of interest related to the topic:

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 608:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, '(There is) no 'Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah's permission). nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar, and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion ''

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 615:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, 'There is no 'Adha (no disease is conveyed from the sick to the healthy without Allah's permission), nor Safar, nor Hama." A bedouin stood up and said, "Then what about my camels? They are like deer on the sand, but when a mangy camel comes and mixes with them, they all get infected with mangy." The Prophet said, "Then who conveyed the (mange) disease to the first one?"

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jauziyah's book "Al-Tibb Al-Nabawi" talks about it in detail whether the term "plague" can be taken as an epidemic or not and whether it can be applied in other situations or not. The book is available in English translation with the name " Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet (saw)". I bought it for $13, so its not that expensive and maybe u guys wanna buy it. .S. Virus Experts Slam SARS Panic

By Maggie Fox

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People around the world are overreacting to SARS (news - web sites), creating a sense of panic that could overwhelm common-sense measures for containing the virus, top U.S. AIDS (news - web sites) experts said on Monday.

Sensational media coverage of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, which has killed around 350 people worldwide, has fanned the flames, said David Baltimore, who won the 1975 Nobel Prize in medicine for his work on how viruses cause disease.

"I think there has been overreaction," Baltimore, a leading AIDS researcher who is now president of the California Institute of Technology, said in a telephone interview.

"I have to agree with that," added Dr. David Ho, another top AIDS expert who heads the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York.

"Obviously, the fear comes from the fact that this is a novel disease. Many aspects of this epidemic are still mysterious. Fear of SARS is outrunning SARS per se," Ho added.

Ho and Baltimore ought to know. AIDS kills virtually everyone it infects without treatment, and 20 years into the epidemic there is no cure and no vaccine.

In contrast, about 94 percent of SARS patients recover.

Baltimore said World Health Organization (news - web sites) moves have been appropriate, such as the controversial recommendation against travel to Toronto, where 21 people have died from SARS.

But boycotts of Chinese-owned businesses and scenes of people walking the streets of Hong Kong wearing surgical masks show that the general public does not understand the real dangers, Baltimore said.

"As much as overreaction, there has been a lack of balance, of putting it into perspective, because it is a real problem, no question," Baltimore said.

"But people clearly have reacted to it with a level of fear that is incommensurate with the size of the problem, and I think it is getting in the way of a reasonable response."

"IRRESPONSIBLE" COVER-UP

The government in China, where SARS appears to have originated late last year, has been criticized for covering up the initial outbreak -- but officials there have said they feared creating the sort of panic that has been seen.

"The Chinese government was totally irresponsible in covering it up," Baltimore said. "We can't get away from that. It is a demonstration of the value of openness."

WHO has praised Vietnam for its response -- which was to immediately call for international help in handling its own outbreak of SARS. WHO has declared Vietnam to be free of SARS.

"This thing literally never would have happened on anything like the scale it happened if the Chinese had been open about it from the beginning," Baltimore said.

SARS, caused by a relative of one of the common cold viruses, has infected an estimated 5,300 people in nearly 30 countries. It has a mortality rate of about 6 percent, which is higher than comparable respiratory diseases such as influenza.

But while SARS is new and frightening, its impact, so far, has been minor. In a mild year, influenza and its complications kill an estimated 250,000 people around the world. Malaria kills at least a million, mostly children.

Yet earlier this month two Chinese runners were asked to pull out of a marathon in the Netherlands because of SARS fears. Many cities have reported people are avoiding Chinatown districts -- including New York, where no SARS cases have been confirmed.

"What happened to Hong Kong, for example, with the hotel occupancy rate at two percent, is an overreaction," Ho said.

Much can be blamed on media coverage, Baltimore said. "What we are seeing is a playing up of the things that make people worry," he said.

But, he added, perhaps scary reports are just giving readers and viewers what they want.

"In some sense people like to be frightened," he said. "And so, to some extent what I am saying is a denial of what seems to be a basic human instinct -- to get a sort of frisson (shiver) of excitement out of danger. And the press is playing into that."

Re: SARS caused by eating meat?
SisterHania
05/02/03 at 00:14:42
SARS evolved in southern China, where 80 million people share living space with the ducks, chickens, pigs, shrimp, and carp they eat. Chicken waste is fed to pigs. Pig waste is dumped into ponds in which shrimp and fish are raised for food. All the animals are crowded into small spaces where viruses thrive. One scientist called this area "a complete soup of chemicals and viruses." Another explained, "A virus gets into a duck, it jumps to the pig. It mutates, the pig excretes it and humans can become infected."

The consequences of unnatural farming practices and eating animal flesh have killed millions of people. In addition to SARS, animals killed for consumption are also likely to carry listeria, salmonella, leukosis (chicken cancer), campylobacter, and E. coli bacteria, which thrive on crowded, filthy factory farms. Our meat addiction has led to a huge increase in the numbers slaughtered and a faster slaughter process, causing an increase in contamination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 8 million people are sickened by food-borne illnesses every year, and thousands die.
