As-salamu 'alaykum. The Nawawi Foundation is happy to announce our second trip abroad: "Rediscovering Muslim Spain" from Sunday, July 6 to Friday, July 18. The Foundation seeks in conjunction with highly acclaimed Heritage Tours to combine professionally organized and enjoyable tourism with valuable Islamic learning. Our tour last summer in China aimed at giving us direct experience of the cultural genius and civilizational legacy of the Muslim Chinese. This summer in Spain we hope to recover something of the richness and wisdom of Islamic Spain that created one of the most pluralistic and harmonious civilizations in European history. The tour will encompass roughly ten medieval Moorish cities and a number of villages and rural landmarks. We land in Madrid, head north, and then work our way south, "leaving the best for last." By beginning in the North, we will be able to get an idea not only of the scope of Moorish Spain but also of its historical development. Throughout the tour we hope to meet with Spanish Muslims and will visit one of their schools in the countryside. The land tour includes a structured learning program with our invited scholars (3 evening sessions), occasional evening entertainment, and open afternoon and/or evening every now and then to spend with friends and family in free time. Occasionally, we will travel in the evening or have a evening tour in order to make the best use of time, while trying to avoid difficulty through excessive travel. We have tried to provide the best combination of good companionship, excellent accommodations, education, entertainment, cultural immersion, as well as monetary value without cutting corners or sacrificing quality of experience.
