Youth Summer Camp

So I had this absolutely *brilliant* idea of doing a youth summer camp in the area I was going to move to soon Inshaallah  :-[
What I would like to do Inshaallah is run a day summer camp type thing, from July 1 to end of August. The youth will be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the evening. I was envisioning different activities I could do with them...etc.
I have a couple of issues I would like some help with:

a) Anyone in the Adam's Center area? Inshaallah that's where I am moving to and that's where I would like to implement this idea. I contacted one person from over there in charge of youth services who seems excited with the idea. Anyone from the area who knows of interesting things to do? Who else to contact? Would like to help out?

b) Actual *ideas*! I gotta come up with interesting things to keep the kids awake from approximately 7am to 6pm.

Any and all help is welcome.

Sis,
Maliha :-)

i once organized a sciency islamic summer camp where i spent a weekend trying to make them understand the uncertainty principle and stuff like that....i guess they weren't so thrilled.....well i still think some people liked it.  but really it was cool stuff.

maybe you can get local professional types to give talks on "what do you do when you grow up and how islam fits in...."  sometimes it doesn't take much to inspire kids....i mean look at me...i was inspired by Muhammad Ali.....and all he did was beat people up!

Thats what i was wondering...
If you need advice on how to keep teenage girls awake and entertained i can probly help you out there inshallah  ;D
my other thought was 6 a.m. - 7p.m. is a verrrrry long day for any age youth, that might prove difficult to work with, just my opinion from past experience  ;)

We are going to keep it open to all ages....the only rule is they *must* be potty trained.
And then it would depend on how many people sign up and what ages.
Now I am keeping it open. I know its going to end up being mixed ages.. So I was thinking we'll divide them up and do age appropriate things. I have plenty for the younger ones cuz its easier to keep them entertained. The older ones is where I would like to put more energy in. So let's just say I need ideas for about 10-15 yrs old?
The reason I say 7am to 6pm, its cuz that's the time most parents are at work. I know the YWCA has the same hours, so if parents are going to work they can drop them off and then pick them up. They also don't to come at 7..they can drop them any time and pick them up anytime.
I hope that makes sense:)
Help please:)

For the older kids... have a story hour each day. If you read it slowly with emotions... you can get their attention.

Read the stories like the Car Crash and the Radio, the story jannah posted about late prayer catching the falling kid(man) before he hit hell and some shorter ones like the wolf and anger.

Bhaloo has some good ones on his site. I am thinking of doing something similar to this. Does anyone have any other stories to suggest or that had made an impact on them?

After their initial shock about the endings... great conversations can follow.

asslamu alykum,

Subhan'Allah it sounds like an excellent plan.. khair insha'Allah..
well i have been thinking of doing something for girls age 6-10 this summer.. I talked to a few elders of the masjid and I love sports  :-X
sooo I am planning this stuff in my head right now. okay brainstorming right now
*We meet 2-3 times a week for 4 hours max.
*Read stories, watch Islamic videos, memorize ayahs and translation*
**Read a couple good Islamic books**
** Memorize Nasheeds**
**Prepare a skit for our annual back to school picnic**
**Play basketball, badminton, volleyball, kickball errr etc..
**Go on nature walks

I really want to limit it to 25 girls, but if I get other sisters involved we can increase the group..
Alhamdulilliah, I know hijabi4L has some great stuff lined up for the older chicas..
But i have always felt the Junior myna girls always get ignored..sigh

Sr.. Maliha, kathy everyone keep the ideas coming.. insha'Allah :)

wasslamu alykum

Ayesha:  insha'Allah that sounds like fun for the junior MYNA's!  if u need help wit that let me kno!
for the older kids i definitely recommend planning skits!  the girls last year did one and they loved it, they're still talking about it!  also, craft-making is always an experience, for all ages.  and sports are a must!!!   ;)
o and i like the timing idea, its a lot clearer now.  thats gonna be very convenient for the parents and the kids inshallah.  sounds like you're all set!  inshalllah everything is gonna go great!  have fun!

So after busying myself with the plans, flyer, etc. I decided, hey it would be a good idea to write the leadership of the Center and ask for permission  :-[ Alhamdullillah, they replied saying that actually *a lot* is going on in their community during the summer time...Inshaallah I will be helping out with what's already in place...
I was thinking about different things to do either way: like Self Defense week (bringing in people to teach Martial Arts), or also Health Week (nutrition, Kickboxing, Aerobics, etc)... Islamic History Week....
At the end of each week, we'll have contests to go over what we learned and prizes for the winners.
Just some thoughts...
My idea was not so brilliant after all...

Yo could always call me, I charge no rates for Islamic Organisations yet you have to cover my travel expenses.

Carry out a questionaire to what the kids want, some kids love kickboxing and self defence others hate it. Some love canoeing and scaling down mountains and others would love to sit round a camp fire or just go fishing. It really depends upon the crowd and the teachers and their experience, you can always read em poem's and have hallal marshmallows late into the evening.

Salaams
