| [slm] I've read that the Prophet's(pbuh) daughter Zainab was married to a non-muslim man (Abul-Aas) for many years after her conversion to Islam and stayed with him in Makkah while the Prophet was in Medina. Why was the marriage not nullified throughout this time? |

| [wlm] Marriages between Muslims and Non-Muslims were not nullified in the beginning days of Islam. However, when the verse came down they were nullified and it was a very trying time for everyone. I think there's some confusion here though. Ruqayya (ra) was married to the son of Abu Lahab (other books say engaged?) and after the message of Islam he forced his son to divorce her. Ruqayya later married Uthman (ra). I think who you mean is Zainab (ra) who did not migrate with the prophet [saw] because she was married to Abu al As ibn al Rabi who was not yet Muslim. The Quraysh tried to persuade Abu al As to divorce Zainab promising him that he could instead marry any woman of his choice. But he turned down their request, saying that he would not divorce Zainab for any other woman. Later after the verses, she did migrate to Madinah and lived there, but did not marry anyone until her husband became a Muslim several years later and the two were re-united in Madinah. |

| [slm] Hmm I guess this is why many scholars say they do not have to divorce their nonmuslim husbands right away when they become Muslim because their is a good chance after seeing the example and reason they will convert also.
