[slm] Great suggestions! I think I will go with the Cashew Chicken.... I love it! About fortune cookies... I have the recipi and I think it would be a blast to put in words of wisdom from Prophet Muhammad [saw] Once I went to a Chinese restaurant with a Muslimah. She refused to eat one because of "fortune telling" ....You all know how 'uptight' my community is.... Fortunes and all... Do you think I should make them? |

[slm] There's a muslim chinese restaurant out here called Jamillah Gardens, and whenever I go there, I eat the fortune cookie, take out the piece of paper in it (the fortune), and throw it away without even looking at it. But I think that's a great idea about including sayings from the Prophet (SAW). Maybe you can share some of these recipes, including the fortune cookie ones. :) |

In a small mixing bowl stir together flour, sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Add cooking oil and egg white and stir till mixture is smooth. Add water and vanilla. Stir Well. Lightly grease skillet or griddle with cooking oil. Make 1 cookie at a time. For each cookie pour 1 tbs. of batter in the skillet or griddle and spread to a 4-inch circle. Cook over medium-low heat about 4 minutes or till light brown. Turn with wide pancake turner and cook 15 seconds more. Working quickly, follow directions below for shaping cookies. Makes 8 cookies. Special Instructions : When the cookie is done on both sides, use a wide pancake turner to lift it out of the skillet onto a pot holder. Working quickly while the cookie is still soft, put a fortune in the middle and fold the cookie in half. Bend the folded side in half over the edge of a bowl. Here are the words of wisdom i put in the cookies...just in case you are interested in doing it some day! It took me about 3 hours to pull out the shirkish papers and reinsert these for about 200 cookies. Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things) They (your wives) are a garment to you, and you are as a garment to them The best Muslim is the one who is best to his family Make not mischief on the earth, Help us against those who deny the truth We have created all things with Qadar And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear; hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the life to come and keep us safe from the torment of the Fire Our Lord! Bestow on us endurance and make our foothold sure and give us help against those who reject faith Our Lord! Take us not to task if we forget or fall into error Our Lord! Lay not upon us such a burden as You did lay upon those before us Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear, grant us forgiveness and have mercy on us You are our Protector Invite all to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate from the truth after You have guided us, and bestow upon us mercy from Your grace Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and the lack of moderation in our doings, and make firm our steps and succor us against those who deny the truth Our Lord! Behold we have heard a voice calling us unto faith: Believe in your Lord as we have believed Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and efface our bad deeds and take our souls in the company of the righteous Our Lord! And grant us that which you have promised to us by Your messengers and save us from shame on the Day of Judgement Our Lord! Lay open the truth between us and our people, for You are the best of all to lay open the truth Our Lord! Pour out on us patience and constancy Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Your presence and dispose of our affairs for us in the right way Our Lord! Grant that our spouses and our offspring be a comfort to our eyes, and give us the grace to lead those who are conscious of You Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness and Most Merciful Our Lord! In You we have placed our trust, and to You do we turn in repentance, for unto You is the end of all journeys Our Lord! Perfect our light for us and forgive us our sins, for verily You have power over all things Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents My Lord! bestow on them Thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood We have enjoined on man and woman (to be good) to his/her parents; show gratitude to Me and to thy parents; to Me is (thy final) Goal We have enjoined on man and woman kindness to parents Your Heaven lies under the feet of your mother O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet said: Your mother The major sins are to believe that Allah has partners, to disobey one's parents, to commit murder, and to bear false witness Be good to your mother If you ask, then ask of Allah, and if you seek help, then seek it from Allah The pens have been raised and the pages are dried Help your brother whether he is oppressed or an oppressor If anyone helps an oppressor knowing him to be such, he has gone outside the religion of Mohamed(SAW) Allah has forbidden himself from oppression, and has forbidden men from doing oppression Beware of oppression, because the prayer of the oppressed is never unanswered (by God) Do not crave for property lest you should be absorbed in the desire of worldly life Shall I not inform you of something more excellent than fasting, prayer and charity? It is putting things right between people Acquire knowledge, it enables its professor to distinguish right from wrong; it lights the way to heaven A Muslim who plants a tree or sows a field, from which man, birds and animals can eat, is committing an act of charity There is a polish for everything that takes away rust; and the polish for the heart is the remembrance of Allah The most excellent Jihad is that for the conquest of self If you put your whole trust in Allah, as you ought, He most certainly will satisfy your needs, When Allah created his creatures He wrote above His throne: 'Verily, my Compassion overcomes my wrath Allah will not give mercy to anyone, except those who give mercy to other creatures Then the Prophet said: 'O my son! This is one of my laws, and he, who loves my laws verily loves me Son, if you are able, keep your heart from morning till night and from night till morning free from malice towards anyone Say what is true, although it may be bitter and displeasing to people Kindness is a mark of faith, and whoever is not kind has no faith When you see a person who has been given more than you in money and beauty, look to those, who have been given less O Lord, grant me your love, grant me that I love those who love you; grant me, that I might do the deeds that win your love It is better to speak to a seeker of knowledge than to remain silent; but silence is better than idle words It is better to sit alone than in company with the bad; and it is better still to sit with the good than alone Verily, a man teaching his child manners is better than giving one bushel of grain in alms Whoever is kind, Allah will be kind to him; therefore be kind to man on the earth He Who is in heaven will show mercy on you It is difficult for a man laden with riches to climb the steep path, that leads to bliss Who are the learned? Those who practice what they know No one should boast over one another, and no one should oppress another Who is the most favoured of Allah? He, from whom the greatest good comes to His creatures A true Muslim is thankful to Allah in prosperity, and resigned to His will in adversity A Muslim who meets with others and shares their burdens is better than one who lives a life of seclusion and contemplation Serve Allah, as you would if you could see Him; although you cannot see Him, He can see you Allah does not look at your appearance or your possessions; but He looks at your heart and your deeds The best richness is the richness of the soul Keep yourselves far from envy; because it eats up and takes away good actions, like a fire eats up and burns wood Much silence and a good disposition, there are no two things better than these Verily, Allah is mild and is fond of mildness, and He gives to the mild what He does not give to the harsh Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him When two persons are together, two of them must not whisper to each other, without letting the third hear; because it would hurt him Verily, it is one of the respects to Allah to honor an old man All Muslims are like a foundation, each strengthening the other; in such a way they do support each other Strive always to excel in virtue and truth You will not enter paradise until you have faith; and you will not complete your faith till you love one another He, who wishes to enter paradise at the best gate, must please his father and mother I am leaving two things among you, and if you cling to them firmly you will never go astray; one is the Book of Allah and the other is my way of life The best of alms is that, which the right hand gives and the left hand knows not of The perfect Muslim is not a perfect Muslim, who eats till he is full and leaves his neighbors hungry No man is a true believer unless he desires for his brother that, what he desires for himself To strive for the cause of Allah from daybreak to noon and sunset is better than the goods and enjoyment of the whole worldly life The proof of a Muslim's sincerity is, that he pays no heed to that, which is not his business Do you know what is better than charity and fasting and prayer? It is keeping peace and good relations between people Conduct yourself in this world, as if you are here to stay forever; prepare for eternity as if you have to die tomorrow The worldly comforts are not for me I am like a traveler, who takes a rest under a tree in the shade and then goes on his way Whoever seeks to be patient, Allah will make him patient Those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure An ailment is intensified for the righteous whenever a believer is afflicted by a hardship Allaah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, Allah, He (ever) prepares a way out; And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine If anyone puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him When My servants ask you about Me, I am always near I answer their prayers when they pray to Me Our Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive us Pardon us, forgive us our transgressions, remit our sins, and let us be among the righteous when we die Our Lord, direct us to appreciate the blessings You have bestowed upon us and upon our parents, and to work righteousness that pleases You Our Lord, let our spouses and our children be a source of joy for us, and keep us in the forefront of the righteous Let not our hearts waver after You have guided us, and shower us with Your mercy Our Lord, please answer our prayers You are always near, responsive Allah multiplies for who he pleases If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good Any Muslim has two daughters, and be a good companion to them, will enter Heaven because of them Whoever has three daughters or three sisters and supports them will enter Heaven Worship your Lord: prostrate yourself, and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down O my Lord, build for me, in nearness to Thee, a mansion in the Garden For Allah are certain and dignified names: therefore call upon Him by them Put your trust in Allah, for Allah loves those who put their trust in Him From the excellence of a man’s Islam is leaving that which does not concern him Allah is Informed of what you do Turn towards Allah, O believers, every one of you, so that you may be successful Ask your Lord for forgiveness and then turn in repentance to Him The one who repents from sin is like the one who never sinned Remorse is repentance Allah will turn towards anyone who turns in repentance before the sun rises from the place it set You who believe, heed God and stand by those who are truthful Every magnificent and important project not begun with the praise of Allah, remains defective The actions of human beings are presented to God on Thursday evening, the night before Friday Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their promises are the heirs of Paradise; they shall abide in it forever Whenever you judge between people, you should do so with fairness Ye will not attain unto piety until ye spend of that which ye love And hold fast all together by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you) be not divided among yourselves Allah make his signs clear to you: that ye may be guided Faithful believers are to each other as the bricks of a wall, supporting and reinforcing each other Whoever severs his ties of kinship will not enter paradise Celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness Truly, in the Messenger of Allah, you have an excellent example ... the raiment of righteousness (taqwa), - that is the best And your god is One God, there is none who has the right to be worshiped but He, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful Be quick in the forgiveness from your Lord, and pardon (all) men - for Allah loves those who do good without doubt in the remembrance of God do hearts find satisfaction If you give thanks, I (Allah) will give you more (of My Blessings), |

[slm] Subhanna Allah the "fortune" cookies went over well! We did not tell the kids what was in them and we all just delighted in watching their faces as they read them. At first they were puzzled. Then just about everyone ran over to their Moms and were tickled that they were 'Islamic' ones. I have a bunch of empty ones left over. Does anyone have a bunch of one/two liners of "cool" facts about Islam / Prophets as, that I could use for classes? Kinda like: Do you know the Kabah was once green? or Did you know Prophet Adam as was over 9O feet tall? |
