Qur'an Etiquette

I am new to Islam and have tried to get an answer to a question for months.  I hope that some one in the community can help me.

Is it permissible to underline ayats in the Qur'an.  I come from a Christian background where everyone made cross reference remarks in the margins of the Bible and underlined or highlighted verses that held special meaning.  I have refrained from doing that in my Qur'an because I didn't know if it was permitted and didn't want to take a chance on doing something that could be considered sinful.

I take Islam much more seriously than I ever did Christianity. :-)

Yasmeena

PS  -  I am very thankful for this community.  I have learned so much just from reading the various posts.  I am especially grateful to the sister who gave us her notes on "Purification of the Heart".  May Allah bless her for her selfless act of doing all that typing of her notes so that we may benefit!

I wanted to do something like that and was told I could not so I have a sheet of paper on which I write down the verse and line number and just a few words refering to the ayat.  I leave it in the Qur'an and so I just look at that paper and know where to find what I want.  The list is very long!!!

Why?

That doesn't make any sense.  It's not like you're crossing out verses of the Qur'an or changing the words.

How would it be any different from a book of tafsir, except for the fact that these notes would be sloppily written by hand in pen/cil compared to calligraphic print in published tafasir?

I don't get it.

The Qur'an is meant to be studied, not to be treated as a piece of calligraphic art or painting which cannot be touched!

smile..... this one gave a flash back..... lol

I do believe there are some etiquette's for the Holy Qur'an there must be, this was our word given by Allah(swt) himself, of course we want to keep it of the material value it is and not worship the book but rather the word of Allah(swt) itself. But personally, I have not looked into what any proper etiquettes may or may not be. So I hope you may find your answer..... Insha Allah ... I hope someone here may know for sure for you.

But for the flashback lol...still laughing.... There was a time I had placed the Qur'an on the coffee table..... haha..... I happened to put it down there when I was done, intent on reading more latter..... lol... I still laugh at the funniness.  Someone then later had come and wanted to set down..... you know what they said.... with this insistant (rather upset) tone, they said " It really bothers me that you put the Qur'an there.... I want to put my feet on the table & it would be disgraceful to place my feet next to the Qur'an. " ....lol...Here I'm thinking: (hey hey just calm down.... I'ts not the end of the world yet).... but I had to ask  ::) It's not a disgrace to not read it, but it is a disgrace to place your feet next to it.? ... (lol)... :-[ and what about your feet on the table anyway?...... boy you're too funny... but I won't judge you... if you don't judge me... fair? ... (lol ... and just so you feel better)... I'll even remove the Qur'an.... (lol)..... (must have been one bad day there) :(

I'm like sister Ameera..... I have a notebook that I keep along side and use it for marking references and issues I want to study more or come back and re-read often, etc.

BTW: Welcome to the Board sister Yasmeena..... I think we should put your name on the other thread for beautiful girl names  :-* & Welcome to Isalm...... May Allah(swt) hold you ever so close..... Ameen

Hmm don't know the fiqh ruling on this but perhaps we should ask about it. I know in Syria it's common practice when learning tajweed to make marks in your Quran about certain things.. ie circling a fatha when you tend to always mispronounce it. But I also know scholars talk about the sacredness of books and their authors and one of the things you don't do out of respect is write/highlight all over it... but I know that would be difficult for some people who write all over their books in the margins or highlight their textbooks or other books for study so Allahu alam...

Assalamu Alaikum

The etiquette  for handling the Arabic Qur'an is not the same as if you are reading an english translation. So i think it is ok if it is a translation, but its better to ask a scholar to make sure

Thank you for your replies. :-/

I e-mailed my daughter's Imam in S. Carolina and he told me as long as the Qur'aan in question is not an Arabic Only one it is okay to underline or highlight verses.  He said that he does that too when the verse references something he wants to remember for talks or for personal study.  :-*

B.R.Raheem!

For students and new muslims for the sake of study they should have a personal copy of Quran the respectful one in their use......

Its ok to mark and underline ayats for note taking. We all do that with the permission of our teachers who themselves have Quranic copies from their childhood marked with borders.....

The public copy of quran which is for general use is not allowed to be marked or anything else but a personal copy is ok!

Every thing is based on ones intention..........

Dear Sister Yasmeena,

Welcome to Islam. I wish Allah (SWT) will bring you joy and blessings.
You sound like a very serious student of the Qur'an.

Insha'Allah you will continue your studies and find reward for your hard work.
I am not sure about the question of highlighting or making notes.
But I will ask the Imam at our masjid ASAP.

I have been wondering the same thing, myself.
I was thinking of having two Qur'ans. One clean copy for
recitation and reading. And another for studying and
marking in.  But the others' suggestion of keeping a notebook
is probably best.

In the meantime, wishing you a tranquil anniversary of the Prophet's
birth on Monday 5/19. Some spend that day fasting and reading Quran,
since it is also the commemoration of his death. Some Muslims do not
celebrate/commemorate this day. One Muslim "saint" Rabia Al-Adawiyya once said she was so full of love for Allah [swt] that she had no room left for love of the Prophet (PBUH). This is meant figuratively. Although Muslims love Prophet Muhammad, it is very clear we do not worship him. I wish non-Muslims would understand this. Well, a bit off the subject, but....

Wishing you peace.

Also a new Muslim.

Sister Julia

[slm]  :-) Julia,

Thank you for your welcome to me to Islam.  I am doing a lot of studying.  I have read some of Ahmed Deedat's booklets, The Ideal Muslimah, several books on the Qur'aan and of course the Noble Qur'aan.  :)  I like the Noble Qur'aan for the footnotes that are quite extensive for some subjects.  So far my favorite story in the Qur'aan is about Musa and Khidr.  The lessons on patience are great! :) :)  At the present I am reading Ar-Raheequl-Makhtum (The Sealed Nectar) on the life of the prophet.  I have always liked deep, thought provoking books and am an avid reader. ;)

I have been Islamic for 1 year yesterday.  I didn't really start studying hard until three months or so ago.  I had to get all of my novels out of the house and into our storage unit so that Islamic books is all I have to read.  It really worked.  I wish I had done that a looooonnggg time ago!! ::)

I don't go to Al-Junnah at our local masjid because when I do I am usually the only sister there.  I do go when a new sister takes her shahaddah so that there will be a sister to lead her through it and be there to welcome her.

Thank you again  :-) Julia fo your post.
