So it's a little late... |

Hi everyone :) I've been notified that as part of the new registration process ??? new members have to publicly claim if they are Muslim or not. The "seeker" thread has been locked, and no one has ever asked me to introduce myself, as far as I recall (so I really didn't think this process was such a big deal). So, I've decided to introduce myself and complete the registration process here. As you can see from the cool Arabic script on the left, yes, I am a female. I just graduated a second time -- and God willing, will be off to do more schooling in September. I can read German and Arabic and am learning Hebrew. My interests include poetry writing, Qur'anic calligraphy (my own as well as others), listening to my favourite Imams' lectures online (can't wait to see Moktar at ISNA in TO!!!), and studying historical currents. For fun, I chill at the local Indigo Boosktore Cafe -- and frequent this page. I have "family" (friends of the family who are just like blood) in Bosnia and Slovenia -- if any one has information on how Mostar's rebuilding is coming along (especially the Stari Most), please let me know! Everyone else in my family lives in Germany, TO or sunny BC. I guess that's me in a nutshell. Oh wait -- I play the alto sax too, and scare people at the gym with my hijab. My quote? It means to not approach new things with baggage -- ie: leave your preconceptions and ego at the door. Let your butterflies fly free, without anything weighing them down. With peace, Nistar. ps...I am Muslim. |

Thanks Maliha! My name means: obscure, hidden, mysterious, or cryptic. It's primarily applied to the esoteric nature of certain texts -- like poetry! The multiple meanings behind the words. So it's a literary term. Peace, Nistar |
Are you learning in a class? I'm currently learning arabic, but I REALLY want to learn hebrew, chinese and russian as well!!
Not quite -- my school didn't have the funding for "exotic" languages. So I learned Arabic from an older member of the community, and the Director of the Jewish Studies Dept. helped me initially with Hebrew -- and now I'm learning from a book. But like any language, I'll have to find a proper instructor.
Am glad u wrote that bout the gym, I've been feeling slightly nervous at the thought of going to the gym with hijaab
Yes, I was nervous as well the first few times -- but in my experience, I find it's the women who stare and not the men! I go in the mornings when the men are few and the women come in numbers ;) And I've only ever gotten comments from women in tight spandex, "Aren't you hot?!?!" I say no -- that my loose clothes keep me cool, and note that I'm probably burning more calories ;D An older woman once told me that she gained inspiration from seeing me working out so hard. The extra clothes and covered head gave her the motivation to work hard herself :-*
wow you do Qur'anic caligraphy???
Well...let me qualify my previous statement with: I do calligraphy for people as gifts and the like -- but it's really just a bunch of scribbles on a page :P If I wanted to do authentic calligraphy, I'd have to go for special classes. There is a *huge* tradition and rules that go along with this Art. You have to have pure intentions, be ritually pure, and definitely have a guide! You're reproducing the words of God -- so the process is very spiritual. I do what I can (ie: make ablutions before), find a verse I like (ie: Fasabbih bismi Rabbikal-adheem), create an arrangement, and then flourish what I can :) I learned a lot from my Prof for my class, "Islam and Art" -- she learned calligraphy in Pakistan when she was young.
Inshallah, I'm looking forward to seeing Shaikh Mokhtar at ISNA next weekend too
Wow -- is it next weekend already?!? I'm currently living in-between Kingston and TO (going back and forth between the two). If you see a bunch of sisters spilling out of a silver beetle -- crankin' the tunes (*cough*Raihan*cough*)...that should be me and my best sisters. Who else is going? Peace, Nistar |

[wlm] Thanks for letting us know Nistar. Contrary to popular opinion I don't read all the posts and I don't keep track of the lives of 600+ members. So if in error we add you as a Madina Seeker, please let us know. Btw this is not a new policy, it's been around for a long long time. jazakamuallahu khairan |

[slm] Welcome to the board and enjoy your stay, insha'Allah. :) Alhumdullilah you are Muslim, I was actually going to ask earlier because I didn't see it in any of your posts. I guess lately its been causing confusion, and maybe it should be part of the registration process. |

[slm] Welcome to Madina Binah I Really hope you enjoy your time here, there are some truly wonderful brothers & sisters here. You know, you chose my favorite icon the simplicity of it is truly beautiful. I thought you might enjoy this (Arabian Proverb): A Friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one's heart, chaff and grain together knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it. keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away Best Wishes as well.... May Allah(swt) hold you ever so close -- Ameen [wlm] |

[slm] Nice proverb Simply_Sister!!! :-* I love it! heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey Binah! Nice to see you show up! I can't wait to see you next week! -- I'm too excited! Hey everyone -- I guess Binah is too shy (modest, sweet-hearted...) to introduce herself further than a, "hi." So I'll just have to say that she is one of the coolest people I have ever met. :) She sings opera in German, Spanish, French...is beautiful inside and out...and got a really high mark on her 451 paper!!! :-/lol :-/ (I picked it up for you!!) Peace, Nistar |
