| [slm] This is a fun question, but also i suppose it's a bit deep. Suppose someone gave you one million dollars. What would you do with it? The real reaon why I am asking this question is because I heavily suspect that there are many, many normal muslims in America with a net worth of over $1M, and I am pretty sure (based on personal experience) that very, very few of them pay the required Zakat. Lots of muslims for example forget/ignore that stock market shares are subject to zakat, extra homes, etc. The reason is: zakat is actually in some sense a much harsher tax than say income tax -- because it is a tax on savings, and even if you don't earn money, but have say shares (think of retired people or underaged minors with their own college funds) you still have to pay zakat. And that's why lots of people are lazy/negligent about paying Zakat. Anyhow putting aside my useless motivations..... What would you do with a million dollars?!!! (a) Would you give a proportion away to islamic charities or say the UNICEF or....who knows....something like Greenpeace? If so what proportion would you give away? (b) Would you share it with your siblings and/or parents? How much would you share? (c) Would you give it away to people who might be able to utilize it better -- like some very clever and educated people who could really use the money say to fund something like a Islamic Institute for Environmental Studies, or something of that sort? (d) How much would you keep for your self? How much would you put aside for your future or existing children? Now comes the really fun part, suppose someone gave you $10M, what would you do with it? And now suppose someone gave you $100M? How about $10 billion??!!! If i had $20B, i am pretty sure that i could fix the muslim world, or a least a significant fraction of it...insha Allah....and just think...Saudi princes and businessman have over $800B invested in just America (forget Europe).....one wonders what they might be able to do if only...... |

| [slm] Ok, am not going to give a really deep answer, nor an amazing one at that. This is all just from the top of my head, and I'm going to ignore the different amounts of money you've mentioned. Right, if I was significantly/very well of then: -I would give some money to my parents, and get them whatever they wanted (Mum has a thing for gold), and I would take them whereever they wanted to go, and buy them a MASSIVE (their dream) house. -I would pay for all my brothers' education, so they never have to worry about that or take out student loans, etc. -I would like to sponsor a child from a country and even try and find them a really good school and pay for all their educational needs, and other expenses. -I would foster a child -Give money to chairty -Give money to medical research and help pay for certain equipment that can very well save someone's life, and help build new technology that would help ease the suffering off many. -Iwould love to give money to the palestinians so that they can take a real stand against the israelis (by no menas am I referring to violence, I mean something like super indestructible houses so that the israelis would get fed up bulldozing them, etc, and for loads of medical/psychological/educational fascilities, etc) -set up medias that aren't afraid to tell the real truth -pay to take war criminals to trial and see that they do receive their just desserts -ok, so amongst other things, I would also save some money for me so that I could go travelling! This wouldn't have to be very much, because I don't mind walking, hitch-hiking, etc! am sure others will think of more clever, intelligent, sensible. cool things, but that's what came to mind when I read ur post :) |

| [slm] I would build a Muslim youth center... including a gym, pool, track. courts etc... lecture halls, library, home ec area. and next to it would be an apartment complex for Muslims.. the rents would pay for the upkeep and staff. |

[/quote] FYI bro., Pakistan alone has a loan of $40 billion, (yes u read it correct, that's BILLION) to pay off, so imagine how much in total the other Muslim countries altogether would be in debt, probably easily in trillions, or maybe more than that. As for the Saudi princes and businessmen, I heard recently that they are/going to be bankrupt. *Day-dreaming*------------> If I had $20b, I would invest it in multi-billion dollar businesses, multiply the money as much as I could, make a lobby of Muslims as strong as Jewish lobby is in US, and then control the world like they are controlling, but rule it with righteousness...........Muhahahahha 8) (But then my definition of righteousness also includes overcoming the 'Power of Lust' and the 'Lust of Power' ::)) Wassalam. |

| [slm] * invest in promoting my dotcom with a worldwide ad campaign * start an englsih satellite channel for Islam * pay advance for a international pulisher * charity to those dire in need * hand over the rest to my parents to cover the expenses involved in finding a suitable partner ;) |

| [slm] What i wanna share here is may not related to the topic but its about how someone would do with money. A local radio station here held a contest and a 19 yrs old college student won the grand prize worth 60,000. Just imagine a young college student with 60,000 cash. What she did with the money? She gave away all of them to the Iraq War Fund!! She didn't even keep a single cent for herself. I honestly dunno if I could do that easily. Though I would give to the needy, I would still use/keep some for myself. Reading what she did made me feel so selfish :'( [wlm] :-) |

| [slm] [i]I am thinking more along the lines of unlimited funds here... hey, since we are fantasizing why not? :) [/i] a) I would open HUGE orphanages in the U.S. ;D They will have plush rooms, huge auditoriums, gyms, olympic siz pools (One for girls and one for boys :-* ), a *huge* school with the *best* resources and *certified* teachers, counsellors, psychiatrists, scholars, will be on board guiding the children:) Shower them with Love and Compassion and nurture them into tommorow's leaders :-* b) I would take control of the biggest Media channels and distort every false perception that exists out there today :P Hijabis will be the coolest, Masajids the place to hang out, "JUST DO IT" will become an Islamic Logo, Nasheeds will Rock the world, and "Laillaha Illa Allah" Will Prevail in every household ;D ****sigh****** c)I would fund "underground" movements to develop Real Muslims educationally, Tarbiyya and Dawah will be the programs of the day :) d)Funnel Money to widows, orphans, and poor people everywhere to invest in long term sustainable projects (not the dependent IMF kind ::) ) e) Fund Muslim artists in all categories to create a flourishing Islamic culture :) f) Start an International Publishing company (with Jaihoon? ) Selfish Expenditures :) e)Pay all my family's debts :) f) Give my mother whatever her heart desires :-* g) Open for my hubby the business of his dreams :-* sooo much more... sigh... | [slm] Well my uncle (only in late thirites and a hafiz, mash'Allah)who came over to visit for the weeknd is a millionaire mash'Allah. I know he invests ajd has property. He helps the family and community alot. Alhumdulilah. My cousin is able to support his wife because he works for my uncle and many of my other cousins work for him also. He helps alot of the men get on their feet... IF I had the money i know I would give it mostly to my family, people i love, and the people who are in need of it. It is nothing I would care to have. |

| Awesome post :) 1)Because I raised my sons mainly alone I have always wanted to buy a small apt complex (4 to 6 units) and allow single moms and their children to stay rent and utility and grocery free and pay for the day care for up to 2 years they go to school to learn a trade where she can support her family. 2) I would pay off my sons homes and cars 3) I would ask my daughter-in-laws to be full time homemakers since I paid the houses and cars off, the son's pay would be more than enough for anything else. 4) Anything left I would buy my husband and myself a modest small farm. I can do the above easily on 1 M Great thought provoking post. Caraj |

| [slm] If I started with £1 million I'd probably be quite sensible and boring about it. I'd immediately start buying some property which I would then rent out which would give me an income. I also, may want to try property developing aswell to see if I could do it. Can you tell I've been playing a lot of Monopoly? :D I'd want a car of my own and I'd spend money on family so they get lots of pressies and stuff. A percentage of money would go to charity, perhaps War Child or UNICEF. I imagine paying zakat could be difficult. cuz, i mean, if you had a massive windfall of £1million you would pay roughly £25,000 (I think). That's a big amount especially, if you didnt earn that million and so wasn't expecting more money any time soon (and assuming you sank that money into property). could you keep some money as zakat or would it count as part of your money? hmmm....perhaps I'm thinking too much on this one. |

| Thats a wonderful post, it did make me think Lets see, if I had unlimited funds, I would 1) Build spaceships so that we could place humans all over the solar system 2) Build an international policeforce that could stop any act of agreession and hold nations accoutable to a common justice. 3) Build schools and orfanages. 4) Teach everyone english 5) Build a specal anti-terrorist term that could chase bin ladin and the others of his ilk without having to engage in fustrated attacks on nations. Said team would also assinate saddam and the others like him without bombing innocents. Wish fufillment or what? Chris |

| how about ice cream trucks all over everyone's neighborhood giving away free ice cream. If everyone took out a few minutes of every day to have a Drumstick or an ice cream sandwich then the world would such a great place!! or maybe if we could increase the rate of global warming then even people in places like albany, new york could have a great winters like we have in so calif. it is just a wish, but if we all tap our shoes together and close our eyes..... |
