Natural Household Hints

1) Flies or bees bothering you? Spray them with hairspray and they will take a quick dive.

2) Sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.)

3) Use Empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them  neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

4) For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps.  They won't refreeze.

5) Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little effort

6) Opening brand new jars can be a feat in itself. Well, I have found a way to make it the easiest thing to do. Instead of banging a jar of jam, pickles, etc., with a knife until it loosens up, I simply reach into the drawer and pull out the handy nutcracker. It adjusts to the size of the jar  and I simply give it a good twist and off pops the lid!

7) Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works every time!

8) Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks. Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don't wash windows on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.

9) Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on. Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly  washed  for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linens.

10) Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.

11) To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm!

12) To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stovetop.

13) Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains.

14) When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake.

15) Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

16) When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness.

17) Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

18) To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief.

19) Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for yourself.

20) Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

21) When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily.

Are your referring to the Universal Oil ?

It doesn't have any lemon. I believe it's active ingredients are eucalyptus oil and camphor. Whatever it contains, it's very effective, not only for headaches but for chest congestion as well. I love the smell...has an uplifting effect..and one bottle lasts a long time

Honey
a_Silver_Rose
05/27/03 at 00:57:45
[slm] thought this was kewl and wanted to share, in honey there is healing and sometimez we tend to neglect the fact. I did a six page research paper on honey and amazing things I found, Mash'Allah. the amazing benefits in honey are finally starting to be noticed. Alhumdlilah. One interesting thing I found was that honey kills all seven types of  bacteria that cause wound infection. If you put honey on your fruits and vegetables they tend to last longer. Also honey is twice as sweet as sugar, so when using it for a suger substitute, use half the amount.

HONEY

The Holy QURAN in Surat an-Nahl vr.68-69 says: "And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colours, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect."
Listed below are some common problems which can be cured by honey:

Over the centuries, the great power and strength possessed by honey has been underestimated by scientists. It's an element whose curing ability has surprised all levels of intellect. A few of the very many cures from honey have been outlined:

For burns: Apply freely over burns. It cools, removes pain and aids fast healing without scarring. Apart from being a salve and antibiotic, bacteria cannot live in honey.

Bed Wetting: A teaspoon of honey before bed aids water retention and calms fears in children.

Sleeplessness: A dessert spoon of honey in a mug of hot milk aids sleep and works wonders!

Hyperactivity: Honey is a mild sedative with minerals, vitamins, amino acids etc. Replace all white sugar with honey. White sugar is highly stimulating with no food qualities!

Nasal Congestion: Place a dessert spoon of honey in a basin of hot water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin. Very effective.

Wounds or Grazes: Cover wound with honey and a bandage. Excellent healer.

For Fatigue: Dissolve a desert spoon of honey in warm water or quarter honey balance of water in a jug and keep in the fridge. Honey is primarily fructose and glucose and so it is quickly absorbed by the digestive system. (Honey is a unique natural stabilizer - ancient Greek athletes took honey for stamina before competing and as a reviver after competition.)

Facial Deep Cleanser: Mix honey with oatmeal approx. 50/50 till thick and apply as a face-pack. Leave on for half an hour then wash off. Great as a deep cleanser for acne etc.

Poor Digestion: Mix honey with apple cider vinegar approx. 50/50 and dilute to taste with water. This aids digestion. (Also reputed to be wonderful for the joints.

Hair Conditioner: Mix honey with equal quantity of Olive Oil and cover head with a warm towel for half an hour then shampoo off. Feeds hair and scalp. Hair will never look or feel better!

Sore Throats: Let a teaspoon of honey melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat. Eases inflamed raw tissues.

For Stress: Honey in water is a stabilizer - calms highs and raises lows. Use approx. 25 percent honey to water.

Anemia: Honey is the best blood en-richer by raising corpuscle content. The darker the honey the more minerals it contains.

Food Preservative: Cakes with honey replacing sugar stay fresher longer due to natural antibiotics. Reduce liquids by approx. one-fifth to allow for moisture in honey.

Heart Patients: These people are well advised to replace white sugar (sucrose) with honey, natural fructose and glucose.

Hay-fever: Chewing the tops of comb honey stimulates the immune system due to minute amounts of pollen. During the season chew for 20 minutes a teaspoon of bee capping (tops) five to six times per day. Highly effective and useful for asthma sufferers as well.

Baby's Bottle: Four teaspoons of honey to a baby's bottle of water is an excellent pacifier and multivitamin additive. If baby's motions are too liquid then reduce by half a teaspoon; if too solid increase by half a teaspoon.

Teething: Honey rubbed on a baby's gums is a mild sedative and anaesthetic.

Osteoporosis: English research has shown that a teaspoon of honey per day aids calcium utilization and prevents osteoporosis. Essential from age 50 onwards.

Long Life: One common fact worldwide is that the most long-lived people are regular users of honey. An interesting fact yet to be explained is that beekeepers suffer less from cancer and arthritis than any other occupational group worldwide.

Migraine: Use a dessertspoon of honey dissolved in half a glass of warm water. Sip at start of attack. If necessary repeat in 20 minutes. Always effective (so tip goes) as migraine is stress related.

Conjunctivitis (pus in the eye): Honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water. Apply, when cooled, as lotion or eye bath.

Cough mixture

6 oz. liquid honey
2 oz. glycerin
Juice of 2 lemons
Mix well. Bottle and cork firmly. Use as required

Getting rid of odors and smells

Getting rid of odors and smells

By Anis Siddiqi

Take the odor of onions off your hands by rubbing them with baking soda.

Get rid of the smell of kerosene or turpentine on your hands by rubbing vinegar on them.

Many of us love fish, but who can stand the odor left on your hands after preparing them. Wet your hands and rub them with bicarbonate of soda. The fishy odor will vanish.

Most other smells on your hands will go away with lemon. Just rub some lemon juice on them.

Before applying and rubbing your hands with anything to rid them of smells, it is important that you wash them first. But remember to use cold water when washing because hot water opens the pores and lets the smell penetrate, after which it is difficult to get rid of the smell.

Get rid of the fish smell from the pan in which it has been cooked by filling it with water, adding a good dash of vinegar and boiling it up.

Cabbage gives off a foul smell when cooking. To stop that, place a piece of bread on top, or put a walnut or bay leaf in the water. Or, don't cover it when cooking.

To get rid of the smell of paint in a newly painted room, put a cut up onion in a pan of water in the middle of the room. This absorbs the paint smell and doesn't give off any onion smell. Or burn a mixture of charcoal and juniper berries in the room. Or put a few drops of oil of lavender in the paint itself before painting. There will be no smell then.

Deodorize your kitchen by boiling a handful of cloves in several cups of water for 20 minutes, or heat some vinegar on the stove.

To remove cooking odors from a room, put a little cologne on a light bulb and turn it on.

Deodorize the refrigerator by putting an open box of baking soda in it. Or put a dish with a ball of cotton soaked in vanilla. Or put some loose charcoal in the fridge -- this will absorb the smell.

Some people have a problem of smelly shoes. Sprinkle a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into each shoe and shake it all over the inside. By morning the smell will be gone.
If the smell in your clothes does not go, rub a roll-on deodorant on to it, especially where there is more smell, and leave it to soak for a while before rinsing it off.

Plastic containers start giving off a smell after some time. To get rid of it, fill it up with a solution of water (500 ml) and bicarbonate of soda (2-3 teaspoons) and leave it overnight.

If your steel knife starts giving off a foul odor, just plunge it into the earth several times.

Sometimes the dishwasher gives off a funny smell. To deodorize it, pour some orange juice in the detergent dispenser and turn it on without anything in it.

To get rid of the smell in the room where people have been smoking, just place some dishes of water about the room. These will absorb the smell, or place a bowl of vinegar in the room and the smell of the smoke will vanish.

Get rid of bad breath by chewing and swallowing half a lemon -- pith, rind and all -- every now and then. Chewing cardamom or cloves are also effective, though less so than lemon. Gargling with a mixture of rose-water and lemon juice 3 or 4 times a day for several days also gets rid of bad breath.

If you perspire a lot, personal hygiene is the most important thing. Next comes the use of a good deodorant. Also, eat plenty of fresh mint leaves. With time, your perspiration will stop smelling.

Jazak Allahu Kair Abu Atheek. I will definately have to try some of that because I am really big about everything having to smell good.
9) Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on. Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly  washed  for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linens.
I tried this but it was just smelling good because of the perfume even when the light was turned off. My light bulbs are covered and big so I will have to try with normal ones. I have fabric softner sheets in my drawers and its nice and does keep your drawers fresh and smelling good.
20) Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.
Alhumdulilah, this works awesome! I was so excited I starting cleaning all the mirrors in my house with air freshner and then I started cleaning the wood furniture with it. It worked just as well.

ok a natural hint from my side, use toothpaste for burns! It not only makes the pain less but it also helps the scar go away faster if you put it on right after the burn.

Some more I found:

Handy Household Hints

For Refreshing Sleep
Before folding freshly laundered bed linens and placing in your linen closet, sprinkle them with a few drops of lavender oil. This scent will promote relaxation and a deep, restful sleep.

Brushing Sensitive Teeth
To prevent tooth pain while brushing, wet toothbrush under running hot water and then brush teeth gently with your normal brand of toothpaste.

Herbal Air Freshener
When you change your vacuum bag, place fresh sprigs of rosemary or a little dried potpourri in the bag before vacuuming.

Grating Cheese
Before use, run grater or food processor blades under cold water to prevent the shredded cheese from sticking.

Floral Arrangements
To force buds of flowers to open, place the stems in moderately hot water.

Restringing Necklaces
If your beaded necklace breaks, restring it with dental floss, which is very strong.

Mending Curtains
To repair a small hole in your curtains, pinch it together and apply clear nail polish on both sides.

Dripless Candles
Place candles in the freezer for 24 hours before using; they will burn longer and drip less.

Scenting Linens
Instead of throwing them away, place empty perfume bottles in cabinets with folded clothes and linens to give them a nice fragrance.

Getting Children to Eat Veggies
When cooking vegetables, add a few drops of food coloring to the water to create blue peas, purple carrots, red potatoes.

Removing Chewing Gum
To easily remove chewing gum from carpets, linens and your child’s clothes or hair, rub a little bit of gasoline on it.

[bTransferring Fluids ]
To transfer oil or other liquids from a gallon container to a small one, cut off the bottom of a plastic water bottle and invert it to create a funnel.

Soft Hands
Rub your hands with a tablespoon of salt for one minute, then add a tablespoon of sugar and rub both for one additional minute to soften hands.

Preserving Stored Items
To avoid items stored in an attic or basement from becoming musty, place a handful of sugar cubes in them, as they will absorb humidity.

Recycle Old Socks
Place adult-sized socks over the pants of crawling infants to protect from dirt that might be picked up from heavily trafficked areas.

Find Missing Jewelry
Cover the vacuum tube attachment with a thin sock and, holding the sock, vacuum the floor and under furniture to pick up the piece of jewelry.

Bandaid Residue
After bandaid use, remove its dark, sticky residue by rubbing a little olive oil to the area, which loosens it.

Dreaded Catsup Stains
Remove catsup stains on clothing and fabric by pre-soaking soiled area in cold water and a detergent paste. Launder the item in cold water.

Strengthen Loose Buttons
Apply clear nail polish to back of button before sewing to garment with thread.

Mixing Cakes
When the cake batter is blended and you're ready to transfer it to baking pan, dip the spoon in milk to prevent the batter from clinging to it.

Ironing Tip
To give a fresh fragrance to ironed clothes, add two drops of lemon juice to the water in the steam iron. Empty after each use.

Summer Refreshment
For summertime outings, reusable plastic containers are perfect for making blocks of ice to add to large picnic beverage containers.

Cumin Seeds when boiled in water are a good natural sleep aid if you suffer insomnia.

Fresh Ginger when drunk as a tea can help combat coughs and colds, when made up as a compress can alleviate arthritic pain and swelling.

Cardomom Pods when boiled in water, inhaling the steam helps alleviate headaches.

Turmeric when ingested helps combat colds coughs and flu, add a teeny tiny pinch to a glass of milk along with some honey and boil during flu season and InshAllah you won't catch cold. NB a teeny tiny amount will suffice, if the milk turns bright orange than you've added too much.

I have loads more of these but I've just realised I am sooo sad I actually use these in real life   :(
