[slm] By the grace of Allah(SWT) I hope everyone is well. A family friend wants to educate her daughter about Islam. She asked if I knew about any Islamic books, which a teenage girl, growing up in the west, would find interesting. Any suggestions? Jazakallah Khair [slm] :-) |

[slm], What Islam is all about by Yahiya Emerick is a good one to start with. |

[slm] I have to agree with the recommendation on Yahiya Emerick. In fact all his books are really good for Muslims/non-Muslims who have grown up in the west. We need more writers like him. |

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, Also a good fiction book about college life written by a sister from MD, is "If I should speak," by Umm Zakiyya. I'd recommend it for teenagers. |

[slm] i have this book title, "A Young Muslim's Guide to the Modern World," by Seyyed Hossein Nasr. I think its really good, cuz there are historical stuff there. :) especially about west and how we view them... and of course its an islamic book... Seyyed Hossein Nasr was born in Tehran in a family of traditional scholors and physicians. he studied physics, the history of science and philosophy at M.I.T and Harvard, got doctorine from Harvard!! He is presently University Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University. if anyone try to contact him and get any result please let me know! i really want to find more info about him...he is a scholor alright!! i really like his book, very informative. :) [wlm] |

[slm] Don't ready or buy any books by Seyyed Hossein Nasr!!!! He is a shia first of all and not a sunni. Also, he has some very extreme views, to quote him: "All that we can do is to stress that the Sufi teachings center upon two fundamental creeds: Wahdat Al-Wujud (the Unity of Existence, see Ibn Arabi thread in the poem folder for a bit on this topic) and Al-Insaan Al Kaamil (the Perfect Man [i had posted a discussion on this topic before, (i think)])" [Kashf, p.100 quoting As-Sufiyyah Bayna Al-Ams wal Yawm by Sayyed Hossein Nasr, p. 22, translated by Kamaal Khaleel Yaazijee (1st edition), 1975] ;=================================== This topic had come up earlier and one brother had mentioned the strange things he read in one of his books. Its best to stay away from this stuff, and refer to only sunni writers, so that when references are made to hadiths your can refer it to collections within your own library and refer to it to views closer to your own. |
