salam,

just came back from this conference.. rochester is mad far!!  why on earth they keep picking these out of the way backwoods places to have these things i don't know??!  they should have them in albanyia!! the CAPITAL of the state... or if it's 'upstate NorthEast council' what about boston or NY/LI area or at least some other somewhat populated area..??

so they didn't have too many people the first day but it got quite crowded the second day.. probably because 'the big name speakers' were scheduled on sunday...i don't like this concept of coming only for a certain speaker and reserving your seat in the auditorium by leaving some stuff on a seat and then going to pray... like what is that??! i just don't get it..

surprisingly they had quite a few excellent speakers for a little upstate NY conference... including Hamza Yusuf, Zaid Shakir, Abdullah Idrees, Altaf Hussain, Mokhtar Maghraoui, Br Djafar and some newbies I enjoyed as well including Jeewan Chanacka??(what on earth is the bro's name :)) and Sr. Maryam.. it was like a mini baby isna..complete with bazaar (picked up a few nice gifts)

two things i didnt like .. the $25 lunch banquet with the speakers.. who on earth can afford that if they're students? so they end up sitting outside not eating while inside the rich folks got to hear some of the speeches
and the fact that the program was not finalized with lists of "TBA" and time changes... ppl should always wait to print their programs at the last minute so its as updated as possible.. they should also stick to the program time slots/sessions as much as possible even if they have to replace the speaker.. i thought it odd that they didn't have a sisters section and a brother section for auditorium seating but maybe since it's more a 'family' conference that's difficult...

i did like their artsy stuff up on the walls but the walls were unfortunately pretty ugly themselves.. the mehendi table fundraiser was fun ;) wish the bazaar had a bookstore.. registration was very smooth...  the play and singing the youth did was an awesome production! the first muslim conference i've seen with EXCELLENT signs everywhere helping u from the minute u turn into the campus...i think the organizers did a good job. may Allah reward them inshaAllah

back to the content... there wasn't any one speech that rocked.. (hy got close) but all the speakers made alot of good points.... some highlights:

HY - Muslims are worshiping 'islam' and not Allah -- a very interesting point he went into more in the Q&A... that is, Muslims are following the 'form' of islam but ignoring the spirit and very essence of Islam. He used the example of how right after 9/11 his shaykh gave a fatwa that if a woman was afraid for her life and safety she could modify her hijab when going outside to be inconspicuous.ie wear a hat etc..  and then he got all this criticism and flack and ppl saying he told women to take off their hijabs etc etc... and he said that it was just wack... because hijab is to protect women and if it becomes something that harms women then the ruling changes... ie omar ra suspending the theft laws when there was a famine... and ppl were forgetting this.

also talked about how a new muslim woman came to him and was asking him about hijab and stuff and he said not to worry about this issue right now and concentrate on her faith and prayer etc and then she started hanging around with the masjid women who were telling her she was doing this and that wrong and she should wear hijab and that she was committing fornication with her husband because he was nonmuslim etc.. (btw he mentioned that there is a minority opinion that women can still stay with their nonmuslim husbands when they convert) and because of people making everything so harsh.. expecting her to be an ANGEL after converting when they themselves hardly are anything close they DROVE her away from islam....and he said aren't there muslims that are fornicating.. committing major sins? better a muslim fornicator than a kaafir.. it's better to invite everyone to islam.. open the doors to americans.. even if they become 'bad muslims' there are already 1 billion 'bad muslims' but we see what happens when they are against islam.. etc

Another interesting tangent he discussed was about how Muslims are becoming 'like minded cliques'.. ie we break into groups of muslims that have the same 'point of view and opinions' about certain islamic issues.. and then it becomes that we believe that only WE have the right opinion...

hehe he also said that being plump for a woman is ok and that this anorexia of today is demoralizing our girls.. then in Q&A one uncle stood up and said.. 'why are u telling our women to be obese!?'... it was just hillarious.. :)

Br Jeewan - He made alot of good points about activism in masjids. I think 7's going to post the noates. Also, we shouldn't debase the value women have behind the scenes and in the home... he's there speaking only because his wife sacrifices at home and looks after his 2 kids etc

Zaid Shakir - Subhanallah every time I hear him speak at length I am amazed at how much vision and foresight this man has.  He talked about how Muslims are getting so emotional about the 'crusades' and 'missionaries' articles and stories out recently and of course all the iraq post iraq mess and that this is exactly what certain people want. They want to separate us from our supporters and those sympathetic to us. He says we should stop being emotional and start building coalitions with other groups. He made alot of good points about how some ppl are so 'anti american' but there are alot of good american people that think the same way as us.. that see the injustices.. the reason that we don't hear/see them is because certain things are owned by certain people and they have their own agenda.. ie Clear Channel owns half the radio stations in the US and is also owned by GE that makes weapons of war!! and after last week's deregulation TV will end up being the same as well...and we should be smart and work with these people to correct the wrongs to benefit this country.. he said that after living in a muslim country for 7 years america started looking good :)  he said his american friend came back from living abroad and was in the supermarket for the first time back and a man said 'oh you only have a couple items go ahead' and his friend was like in shock and just stood there for a few minutes haha after all the fighting and pushing and standing in line getting budged in the middle east!!!

Abdullah Idrees - gave a great speech on how we can approach getting closer to Allah and having him answer our duas with 13 different stations. i'll write them out sometime inshallah.

Altaf gave some advice about MSA and intentions there's so much more.. i don't think i've been to a conference in about 2 years (except for the one here) and i can really see why i miss them.. they are islamic discourse and activism and a definite motivation and iman booster.. i may just have to go to icna and isna this year ;)

asalaamualaikom,

was just searching for any articles i may have missed about the conference here in rochester and came across this thread.  i'm wondering who you are since you said the mehndi booth rocked...cuz i was the sister who put the mehndi booth up :) and was there for much of the time (at least intermittently) and wonder if i met you there...

anyways, i really, really appreciate your honest appraisals and critiques of the conference.  we'll keep them in mind for next year inshallah :)  i'd love to hear ahmer and "dasoulja's" (whom i think i can 'figure out' too) critiques, as well as anyone else who was there.  but undoubtedly, the rit msa put in a huge huge amount of effort into the conference and i pray they're rewarded beautifully.

wasalaam,
shaza

wow! Jazak Allahu Kair for that awesome review of the conference...
hmm those speakers mentioned all my thoughts! :P
did I mention I LOVEEEEE HAMZA YOUSEF.....as a brother ;) and that hes da kewlest speaker. I agree with everything...and it is so true bout the hijab thing, because Allah (swt) tells us in Qur'an to wear it so we wont be annoyed/molested. if we are going to be in a dangerous sitiuation because of it then that ruins the whole purpose... ! Allah (swt) knows best... and I also sooo soo agree with he was talking bout 'new converts staying w/ their nonmuslim husbands' sheeeesh atleast they became muslim, now dont make them runaway!!!!!!! ok lol I wish I could have been there....did I ever tell you how much I would love to live in NY...
ok well thanx again
your sister

[slm],

I know this might be a little late but I would like to thank everyone for joining us on behalf of the RIT MSA :). This was the first time we hosted MSA/ISNA Conference at RIT but Alhamdulillah it went well. Insha'Allah next year it'll be better. I don't think I met any of the Albany people.. (except for Brother Osamah? - who grad.). Anyway, this fall we are trying to do get another conference (not isna or msa) but a conference pertaining to women rights, and roles (like a 2 day conference). Any feedback and suggestions is appreciate it. You can pm me or email me (ammar@1ummah.org), btw.. for all who don't know, I'm the President (half of you might know my brother - he was on the MSA Albany board). Jazakum Allah Kheirun..
