its not obligatory to take your shahadah in public but its better if you can do it in the presence of other members of Muslim faith. May Allah help you in your conversion, amen.

And do inform us when you convert, we'll have a cyber-party inshAllah to welcome you to islaam :) ... did you read the thread in which chris took his shahadah ? if not then check out the So you've made the BIG decision....   thread in Naseehah Corner category.

But use this thread for your further posts (as a Muslim inshAllah :) )

May Allah help us all

I agree with Nomi.  While not being required to perform shahaddah in public, if you do there will be brothers & sisters to welcome you to Islam.  They will be able to lead you to studies to increase your faith and practice also.

I am so happy to hear you are wanting to revert to Islam!!  The most important thing is that you believe that there is only one God and Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Unto Him) is his final messenger.

The only other thing you need is a witness and Allah is the only one that you need.  It won't hurt to take Shahada in front of others though, as they can help you and support you.  :)

Asalaam Alykum,
Glad to hear you want to take Shahadah, might I suggest that you take it at your local Masjid, whenI re-verted I had one witness but was not told about some things that are important, like takeing a shower after and other things that women need to do. You might want to at least talk to the Imam and get info, also when you re-vert at the masjid they give you books and show you how to pray and make wudu. Just an idea.
Insha Allah everything will work out.
Masalaama,
Emily

Taking your shahada in front of people doesn't matter in terms of Allah, for He knows everything, but it is good for you in the sense that it now becomes public knowledge that you have entered the Muslim community, and there are witnesses to that effect.  A person is entitled to certain rights after becoming Muslim, eg zakat if they are needy, a proper Muslim burial, and so on.

That being said, it doesn't have to be boatloads of people who witness it.  It can be very small and intimate with just a few people present.  It doesn't have to be in a masjid.

Hope this helps.
