Aware of the importance of education, Prophet Muhammad, before he migrated to Madinah, sent Musab ibn Umair and ibn Umm Makyum to teach his few followers.

[al-Fasawi, Tarikh, iii, 193 b]

After his arrival in Madinah, the Prophet first built a mosque, part of which was meant for a school, and from the very early days, Abdullah ibn Saad ibn al-Aas was appointed to teach the pupils how to write.

[Ibn Hajr, Isabah, No 1777]

Ibn al-Aas was killed at the battle of Badr, however victory at Badr brought a number of prisoners of war, some of them were ransomed by teaching children how to write.

[Ibn Sallam, Amwal, 116; Saad, ii, 14; Hanbal, i, 14;  Mustadrak, ii, 140]

There were also other people appointed as teachers of writing such as Ubadah ibn Samit.

[Hanbal, Musnad, v, 315]

In the 2nd year of Hijrah, at least one new school was opened.

[Ibn Saad, Tabaqat,  iv, 150]

In the 2nd year, there were 9 mosques in the city of Madinah (and most probably they were used as schools as well).

[Baladhuri, Ansab, i, 273]

Prophet Muhammad ordered the illiterate and literate to co-operate with each other and admonished those who did not learn from their neighbors and those who did not teach their neighbors. Furthermore, he threatened with punishment those who would not learn.

[Haithami, Majma al Zawaid, i, 164; al-Kattani, Taratib al Idariyah, I, 41]

Special significance was given to the art of writing as in a hadith recorded by many, the teaching of writing is described as the duty of a father towards his son.

[al-Kattani, Taratib al Idariyah, ii, 239]

When people arrived in Madinah from the outer cities, they would stay with the local inhabitants, not just for provision of food and a place to stay, but also for education. Prophet Muhammad used to ask them questions to discover the extent of their learning.

[Hanbal, Musnad, iv, 206]

Sending teachers to teach people outside of Madinah was a main feature of the policy of Prophet Muhammad; at least forty of the teachers who were on their way to Bir Maunah were murdered.

[Baldhuri, Ansab, i, 375]

Many other teachers were sent to Najran and Yemen.

[Ibn Saad, Tabaqat,  iii, 299; Hanbal, iii, 212]

In the 9th year of Hijrah a man was appointed to organize the education in Yemen.

[At-Tabari, Annales, i, 1852-3]

I have a question about educating our children after reading this post.

I have a 12 year old (6th grade) who reads at a 9th grade level.  We are new to Islam (1 year this month).  she tries to read my books I buy on Islam but some of them are too deep for her.  Can anyone suggest books to explain Islam to a pre-teen that she won't think are babyish.  I realize she needs to start with the basics, but most of the ones I have seen in the children's sections of online bookstores seem too young (?) for her.
