Hundreds dead in Algeria quake
At least 538 people have been killed and 4,700 injured after a powerful earthquake hit northern Algeria.
The worst-hit areas are around the epicentre at Thenia, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of the capital Algiers.

The quake struck on Wednesday evening, when families had gathered for dinner.

It brought down scores of apartment blocks in seconds.

I saw the earth tremble, I saw people jump from the window of the hotel
Icham Mouiss, Boumerdes resident
There are reports of people jumping from windows in panic. Survivors have been digging into the rubble with their bare hands in desperate attempts to find relatives and friends.

The Algerian authorities fear hundreds of victims are still buried.

"This is a misfortune which has struck the Algerian people," Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said on television.

Families flee

The BBC's Saed Chitour in Algiers said the tremor shook buildings, brought down masonry and caused panic throughout the city and beyond.

More than 100 people have been confirmed dead in the capital.

People have been thronging the streets, fearful of more tremors. Many residents packed their cars and fled the city and surrounding towns, in frantic efforts to get into the open countryside.

The earthquake hit at 1945 (1845 GMT) and lasted for several seconds. There were several aftershocks in the hours that followed.

State radio said at least 50 people were killed in and around Boumerdes, about 50 km east of Algiers, where a hospital is reported to have collapsed.

"I saw the earth tremble. I saw people jump from the window of the hotel," one resident, Icham Mouiss, told French television:

State radio said 100 people were killed near the industrial city of Rouiba, east of Algiers. Forty two people died in the coastal town of Ain Taya.

ALGERIAN EARTHQUAKES
22 December 1999: 28 dead and 175 injured in north-west
18 August 1994: 172 dead and 288 injured in western region of Mascara
29 October 1989: 30 dead and 400 injured in Tipaza region
10 October 1980: About 3,000 dead and 8,000 injured and in al-Asnam
9 and 16 September 1954: 1,400 dead and 14,000 injured
"It is catastrophic. I have never seen such a disaster in my life. Everything has collapsed," said one Rouiba resident, Yazid Khelfaoui, whose mother was killed in the quake.

At the local hospital, which has been besieged by anxious relatives seeking news of missing loved ones, witnesses described seeing rows of dead bodies.

Power to the majority of the town was cut, hampering rescue efforts overnight.

Telephone lines and mobile phone networks are reported to be working erratically but the system is being overloaded by people trying to call relatives.

Medical appeals

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika held an emergency meeting and sent his interior minister to the affected areas.

The authorities have appealed for medical staff to report to work and for members of the public to donate blood.

The United States Geological Survey said the tremor was the biggest to hit Algeria since 1980, when about 3,000 people died in an earthquake measuring 7.7.

The Maghreb region of northern Africa, which includes Algeria and Tunisia, is the place where the European and African continental shelves meet, making it extremely unstable.
