Assalamu Alaikum Brs and Sisters,

Ok, I need some help... if you were to do a presentation to Non-Muslims about Islam (specifically high school students), what misconceptions about Islam are the most important that you would choose to discuss?

Awaiting your suggestions :)

WassalamU Alaikum,
Deen :-)

Here are a few ...

1. Izlam = Terrorism

2. All Moslems are sandniggas (Arabs)

3. Izlam is a small cult out there in the desert (Middle East), and all Moslems are foreigners

4. Moslems don't believe in God

5. Moslems don't believe in Jesus

6. Moslems pray to the black rock in Mecca

7. Every Moslem wants to be like Osama Bin Laden

8. The veil is forced upon the Moslem women by the oppressive Moslem men

9. Jihad = Holy war

10. Mohammad [saw] wrote the Koran - a book which pretty much tells the Moslems to kill the infidels and beat their women

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah,

As a woman, the first misconception you'll do away with, simply by speaking to the group in a dignified and intellectual manner, is the one about Muslim women being oppressed and/or uneducated.
Secondly, by also having a sense of humor, you'll do away with the idea that all religious-minded people are harsh, stern, backwards, etc.
Thirdly (and I'm assuming), if you don't have an accent, you'll do away with the idea that all Muslims are brought up overseas and don't know anything about western culture. Inshaa'Allah. I'd suggest wearing "Muslim" gear (hijaab, etc), with like sneakers on or something. Trust me, kids look at the shoes. :)

Only a few hundred more misconceptions to go!

May Allah reward you for your efforts. My only other suggestion is to focus on similarities, and not differences. If the group likes you, they'll remember what you said in a positive manner (even if they don't remember everything). If they don't like you (which iA won't happen), they'll either take something negative away from it, or nothing at all.

Check out www.ing.org for tips. May Allah grant you success, aameen.

Humor as in funny. ;)  Most people have a sense of humor (although some are a bit warped. :P ).  Basically just be yourself, let them see that Muslims are normal people, and if you can throw in a few jokes into the mix (i like to do that, to loosen the crowd) that'll help a great deal.
