[slm] This question was asked in a chatroom and noone could give an explanation.... mohammed_ibn_abdullah: What is the punishment for adultery? Flogging with a 100 stripes (men and women) [24:2], "confine them to houses until death do claim them (lifelong house arrest - for the women) [4:15]. For men: "If they repent and amend, leave them alone" [4:16]. 24:2 contradicts both the procedure for women and men in Sura 4. And why is the punishment for women and men equal in Sura 24 but different in Sura 4? Could anybody give me an explanation of the differences? I can't remember, but I believe in the past someone explained to me that in Surah 4:15 is speaking of women who prostitute themselves and Surah 4:16 is speaking of two men having gay sexual relations? Was this correct? Ameera |

[slm] The aayat in surah an-nisaa' were later abrogated by the aayaat in surah An-Noor, and the sunnah of stoning adulterers. Aayah 15 is referring to adultery by women, and ends in the statement (a translation of the meaning): ..until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another ]way. This "way" is that of surah An-Noor, and then the sunnah. There is a difference of opinion whether aayah 16 refers to homosexuals or any adulterer. If it is referring to adultery, then the punishment is the same for both the male and female (a mute point, since these aayat were replaced by other aayaat and the sunnah). Insha' Allah this helps.
