Masjid or Musallah?

Assalamu Alaikum,

I just wanted to ask this question to find out what exactly is the difference between a masjid and a musallah and is there any difference in Ajar in praying at either one?

If the ajar is not equivalent then one must go to a masjid to fulfill the waajib act of praying in congregation?  I live at the hostel (dorms) at the university and we have a moderately large area for Salah five times a day and including Jumuah for the students, doctors and patients.  Arsalan (Abu_Hamza) has seen it so he might know what I'm talking about, Insha-Allah.

I hope you all can shed some light on this.

Jazzak Allahu Khair,

Wassalamu Alaikum,
Uzer

Wait a minute.......there is something new here. Is praying in congregation "Waajib"? I know that there is different definitions of waajib according to different madhhabs, but still I never heard before that praying in congregation is waajib according to any one madhhab out of the famous 4.

Wassalam.

sajada is the act of prostration sajid is the one who prostrtates masjid is the place where one prostrates
salah is prayer musallah is the place of prayer

from my little knowledge i guess masjid is the bigger thing and musallah is the actual place (2*6 ft) of salah

I could be wrong

Masjid is ism-makaan of root S-J-D, meaning place of doing sajda.
Likewise Musalla is ism-makaan of root S-LL-A, meaning place of doing
salat. To my understanding people use term Musalla for a place where the
main function is only conducting prayers. On the other hand masjid is
refered to as a place that besides the prayers caters the community with
respect to other functions required by the community such as teaching,
Dars, Janazah, marriage, community meetings etc. In old literatures even a
specific portion or corner within a masjid is refered to as musalla
because it exclusively used to be used for carrying out salat. I guess
there might be other references to musalla but I am not able to think or
remember at this time. Allah-o-Aalam.

Well let me put my two cents also I think any place either mosque, musalla, ground etc which is pure and clean has the same ajr to be prayed on as long as the prayer is performed in congregation and on time. (But I think number of people present in the congregation makes the difference in ajr although I am not sure about it) As it is clear from following mentioned hadith:

Sahih Bukhari:
Volume 4, Book 55, Number 636:
Narrated Abu Dhaar:
I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Which mosque was built first?" He replied, "Al-Masjid-ul-Haram." I asked, "Which (was built) next?" He replied, "Al-Masjid-ul-Aqs-a (i.e. Jerusalem)." I asked, "What was the period in between them?" He replied, "Forty (years)." He then added, "Wherever the time for the prayer comes upon you, perform the prayer, for all the earth is a place of worshipping for you."

Regarding question of brother Bulwark about being fard prayer being prayed in congregation is wajib or not?  I think it's well known truth it's wajib according to all sects of Islam including shia. Offcourse there are exceptions if one is sick or have threat to his life or for women it's not wajib but in normal circumstance it's wajib for all men as mentioned in Quran:

002.043
YUSUFALI: And be steadfast in prayer; practise regular charity; and bow down your heads with those who bow down (in worship).
PICKTHAL: Establish worship, pay the poor-due, and bow your heads with those who bow (in worship).
SHAKIR: And keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and bow down with those who bow down.

Following mentioned hadiths further show us importance of prayer in congregation:

Sahih Bukhari:
Volume 1, Book 11, Number 617:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is I was about to order for collecting fire-wood (fuel) and then order Someone to pronounce the Adhan for the prayer and then order someone to lead the prayer then I would go from behind and burn the houses of men who did not present themselves for the (compulsory congregational) prayer. By Him, in Whose Hands my soul is, if anyone of them had known that he would get a bone covered with good meat or two (small) pieces of meat present in between two ribs, he would have turned up for the 'Isha' prayer.'

Volume 1, Book 11, Number 626:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "No prayer is harder for the hypocrites than the Fajr and the 'Isha' prayers and if they knew the reward for these prayers at their respective times, they would certainly present themselves (in the mosques) even if they had to c awl." The Prophet added, "Certainly I decided to order the Mu'adh-dhin (call-maker) to pronounce Iqama and order a man to lead the prayer and then take a fire flame to burn all those who had not left their houses so far for the prayer along with their houses."

According to most desi opinions:
[list][*]Salaat offered in a masjid gets more reward.
[*]A musallah is a place that is not a waqf, which is sort of perpetual trust.  This is regardless of the fact that the place is being used as a full time place of worship.  In simplest terms,  a rented place can not be a masjid.   In the west, a significant portion of our places of worship would qualify for this title.
[*]It is not wajib to pray at a distant masjid if a musallah is convenient.
