PICKTHAL: And We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and We established the prophethood and the Scripture among his seed, and We gave him his reward in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he verily is among the righteous.

this was brought to my attention by a co-worker and the question of the fact that Prophen Muhammad  [saw] came from the line if Ishmael came up.  I was asked why in the quran the prophethood comes from the seed of Isaac and Jacob and then Ishmael is not mentioned and yet Mohamamad  [saw] became a prophet?

i have so not studied about Isaac, Jacob or Ishmael yet...

 what to answer??

That is an excellent question.  I haven't found much on Ismail either.  I will be watching this one for replies.

Maybe some one could post a site where we can both get answers!  :) ;)

The translation of the meaning: "And We gave to him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture."
is all referring to Ibrahim (Abraham), so the prophethood is in his descendants, which are Ismael and Isaac, peace be upon them both.  There is no discrepency at all.
Ismail, 3layhi as-salaam, was well known to the Arabs, since he was the "grandfather" to many of them, so not always specifically mentioned, but understood.  Prophet Mohammed,  [saw] was from the line of Ismail.
Jacob was the son of Isaac, and the prophethood of the people of Israel came from him.

Ishmael(Peace be upon him) is mentioned in the following verses of the Quran :-
2.125
PICKTHAL: And when We made the House (at Makka) a resort for mankind and sanctuary,
(saying): Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray). And We
imposed a duty upon Abraham and Ishmael, (saying): Purify My house for those who go around and
those who meditate therein and those who bow down and prostrate themselves (in worship).

2.127
PICKTHAL: And when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House,
(Abraham prayed): Our Lord! Accept from us (this duty). Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the
Knower.

2.133
PICKTHAL: Or were ye present when death came to Jacob, when he said unto his sons: What
will ye worship after me? They said: We shall worship thy god, the god of thy fathers,
Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac, One Allah, and unto Him we have surrendered.

2.136
PICKTHAL: Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and
that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and
that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their
Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.

2.140
PICKTHAL: Or say ye that Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes were
Jews or Christians? Say: Do ye know best, or doth Allah? And who is more unjust than he
who hideth a testimony which he hath received from Allah? Allah is not unaware of what ye
do.

3.084
PICKTHAL: Say (O Muhammad): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and
that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and
that which was vouchsafed unto Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no
distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.

4.163
PICKTHAL: Lo! We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as We
inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah
and Aaron and Solomon, and as We imparted unto David the Psalms;

6.086
PICKTHAL: And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot. Each one (of them) did We prefer
above (Our) creatures,

14.039
PICKTHAL: Praise be to Allah Who hath given me, in my old age, Ishmael and Isaac! Lo! my
Lord is indeed the Hearer of Prayer

19.054
PICKTHAL: And make mention in the Scripture of Ishmael. Lo! he was a keeper of his
promise, and he was a messenger (of Allah), a prophet.

21.085
PICKTHAL: And (mention) Ishmael, and Idris, and Dhu'l-Kifl. All were of the steadfast.

38.048
PICKTHAL: And make mention of Ishmael and Elisha and Dhu'l-Kifl. All are of the chosen.
